Distance relationships may be increasingly undertaken by dual-career couples at some point in their life course. Although this can make it difficult to quantitatively measure the extent of distance relating, qualitative analysis of distance relationships promises to give considerable insight into the changing nature of intimate lives across the life course. This paper indicates the kind of insights offered via analysis of exploratory research into distance relating in Britain. What begins to emerge is a picture of distance relating as offering certain possibilities in relation to the gendered organisation of emotional labour and of care in conjunction with the pursuit, especially of professional, careers. These possibilities might be more realistic, however, at certain points in the life course. Nevertheless, this new form of periods of separation between partners, tell us a considerable amount about how people approach the challenges of maintaining a satisfying and egalitarian intimate life, involving caring relationships with others, within contemporary social conditions.

By viewing these organizations as agents relative to a principal for-profit (or government) organization, it is possible to hypothesize about relationships and behaviors between organizations of different sectors of the economy. This new perspective allows a better understanding of the many relationships observed in the nonprofit sector and of a much greater range of nonprofit stakeholders than is currently possible given existing theory.

This paper uses the most recent data available to analyze the question of position segregation in major league baseball. One of the most consistent beliefs in our popular culture is that in professional sport black Americans have achieved parity with their white counterparts. Surprisingly, given the pervasiveness of this belief, there are relatively few empirical attempts to examine and explain the degree to which parity has or has not been achieved. Our paper examines the extent to which equality of opportunities exist in professional sport by looking at the game of baseball. The paper is a replication and extension of the pioneering study conducted by Loy and McElvogue (1970). We also include in our analysis variables that help predict salary differentials for players by race. The results of our research suggest the following: (1) position segregation still exists in professional baseball with white ballplayers disproportionately overrepresented in the infield (or central positions) and black American ballplayers disproportionately overrepresented in the outfield (or peripheral positions); (2) measures of skill (e.g., home runs, hits, and at bats), not race or playing position, are the only significant predictors of salary; and (3) black ballplayers have a higher median salary than white ballplayers. In our conclusion, we offer several explanations of these relationships and findings.

Anthropological interest in new subjects of research and contemporary knowledge practices has turned ethnographic attention to a wide ranging variety of professional fields. Among these the encounter with international development has perhaps been longer and more intimate than any of the others. Anthropologists have drawn critical attention to the interfaces and social effects of development's discursive regimes but, oddly enough, have paid scant attention to knowledge producers themselves, despite anthropologists being among them. This is the focus of this volume. It concerns the construction and transmission of knowledge about global poverty and its reduction but is equally interested in the social life of development professionals, in the capacity of ideas to mediate relationships, in networks of experts and communities of aid workers, and in the dilemmas of maintaining professional identities. Going well beyond obsolete debates about 'pure' and 'applied' anthropology, the book examines the transformations that occur as social scientific concepts and practices cross and re-cross the boundary between anthropological and policy making knowledge

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to establish the key determinants of the effectiveness of the manager–subordinate relationships and identify the different factors contributing to the effectiveness of this relationship in an Indian context. A model analyzing personal and professional need fulfillment of the subordinates has been presented.Design/methodology/approachThe effectiveness of the manager–subordinate relationship was empirically analyzed using impact message inventory- circumplex (IMI-C).Close-ended self-administered survey was used to measure the variables associated with the effectiveness of the manager–subordinate relationship. Total 324 questionnaires were distributed online among employees of mid-sized IT service organizations operating in India, and 138 valid responses were collected.FindingsResults show that managerial relationship effectiveness is influenced by the manager's affiliation scores, previous work experience and ability to address the personal and professional needs of employees. Further effectiveness of manager–subordinate relationship is enhanced in a friendly workplace where managers are adequately empowered to acknowledge employee needs.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper is empirical in nature and provides a future direction for more research in the area of manager–subordinate relationship in a workplace by exploring more variables.Practical implicationsDerived from an extensive study of current and impending manager – subordinate relationship, the findings may aid many organization and policymakers to develop and refine their people practices to engage human capital with the ulterior aim of having a conducive relationship between the manager and subordinate in the organization.Originality/valueThe present research emphasizes the importance of a healthy relationship between the manager and the subordinate in a digitalized workplace. This study is unique, as it provides insights into the manager–subordinate relationship and the factors influencing the association. The study gives a better understanding of the factors that make the manager–subordinate relationship more effective and fulfilling.

This paper proposes a new network-based approach to analyse intergroup relations in fishing ports. The technique of clustered graphs is applied to the case of the Andalusian fishing ports to assess the balance between intra and inter-professional relationships. The patterns of sociability in Mediterranean and Atlantic fishing enclaves in the southern region of Spain were compared, examining their implications for participatory governance of marine resources. The personal networks of 53 fishermen, ship owners or skippers and key individuals of 18 Andalusian fisheries were analysed. The personal networks were compared in terms of fishing ground (Atlantic versus Mediterranean) and port type (by size and form of participation). The data of 45 individuals with whom each respondent usually interacts in the harbour was summarised in clustered graphs of intra-group and inter-group relationships between 8 professional roles in the harbour. Results show primarily that personal networks of Mediterranean ports are overall denser, in comparison with those of the Atlantic, which are more centralised and have a higher average betweenness. Secondly, in the Atlantic a clear difference of roles between ship owners and skippers is observed. A strong link between ship owners and the crew was found, and also between the ship owner and commercial roles in the Mediterranean. The level of workspace architectural privacy has previously been found to relate to overall job satisfaction. It was hypothesized that because privacy may serve particular functions, only particular facets of job satisfaction will be related to it, both in the short term (less than 1 year) and in the long term (more than 1 year). One hundred thirty professional secretaries assessed their level of privacy and their level of job satisfaction as measured by the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. The results supported the hypotheses and showed that the environment in which one works affects some but not all facets of job satisfaction.

ABSTRACTThis study involved in‐depth exploration of good helping relationships in child welfare. A select sample of six child welfare worker–client dyads was interviewed to determine worker attributes and actions that were key to the development of good working relationships. Innovative features of the research design, such as a multiple interview format with two individual and one joint interview for each worker and client (five interviews per dyad) and opportunities for the worker and client in each dyad to reflect on and respond to the other's interview transcripts, produced rich data and revealed high levels of congruency among workers, clients and researchers about worker relationship competencies. Two categories of themes that emerged from the qualitative analysis are discussed: (1) soft, mindful and judicious use of power; and (2) humanistic attitude and style that stretches traditional professional ways‐of‐being. Implications for the hiring, education and training, and supervision of child welfare workers are presented.

Through migration, professional activism, and by engaging the symbolic terrain of architecture magazines and competitions, Iranian architects have sought to make their profession cosmopolitan. But following decades of isolationist tendencies, factions of the Iranian architecture profession continue to meet resistance from elements of the state. The profession's institutions have become a battleground for the expression of the power of design professionals. Building on scholarship on relationships between states and professions as well as professionals' expressions of cosmopolitanism, this paper demonstrates ways everyday professionals leverage their institutions for professional power. It shares accounts from a transnational ethnography of Iranian architects to show how, on the one hand, professional change seeps outside restrictions attributed to political and economic borders. On the other hand, the stories of cosmopolitan professionals show that the state need not be bound by structural sanctions, like those Iran has faced, in its efforts to cultivate an avant-garde.

Presented at the IASSIST/CARTO 2018 Conference in Montreal, Quebec. ; Truth and Reconciliation for Map and Data Professionals: Our Calls to Action In December 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released their final report and the 94 Calls to Action urging all levels of government and Canadian citizens to work together to repair the harm caused by residential schools and move towards reconciliation. The Calls to Action provide data and map experts with the opportunity to build relationships, collaborate, and participate in the reconciliation process and as well as advance the cause of social justice of indigenous peoples in Canada and abroad. This presentation will discuss several Calls to Actions that are of particular relevance to individuals in the map and data services community, specifically the Actions that refer to microdata, aggregate data, and cartographic information about residential schools and the legacy of residential schools on Indigenous people in Canada. This presentation will highlight datasets that require better access, as well as priority data and cartographic resources that need to be rescued. These data and resources are essential so that, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation can fulfill their mandate, educators can provide enriched curricular materials for students, academic researchers have access to quality data, and Indigenous Canadians can tell their own stories.
