This book examines the relationship between politics, ethics and law in risk governance involving multi-valued human biological materials, such as blood. HIV blood contamination episodes in the USA, England and France are used to examine the emergence of and the consequences resulting from the politicization of risk. The emergence of the phenomenon is examined through a focus on the role of the gift relationship in blood donation, as well as scientific expertise and innovation in risk governance processes involving the blood system. Its consequences are examined through an analysis of legal action taken by aggrieved patient groups, in addition to a critique of the increased use of precautionary and regulatory strategies in dealing with emerging risks to blood safety.

Das Buch ist als Begleitpublikation zur Dauerausstellung des LVR-Industriemuseums, Schauplatz Ratingen erschienen. Die Textilfabrik Cromford - gegründet 1783 - war die erste mechanische Spinnerei außerhalb Englands. Heute zeigt das Museum in den damaligen Fabrikgebäuden die Verarbeitung von Baumwolle mit Spinnmaschinen dieser Zeit. Neben der Technik geht es auch um die Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen der dort arbeitenden Männer, Frauen und Kinder. Es geht um Kinerarbeit und Fabrikschulen. Aber auch die Baumwolle wird thematisiert, wenn es um die neuen Baumwollmoden und ihre Absatzmärkte geht. Das barocke Herrenhaus neben der ehemaligen Fabrik war die Schaltzentrale dieses Unternehmens. Hier wohnte gleichzeitig eine der führenden Fabrikantenfamilien ihrer Zeit. Von seinem Kontor aus leitete der Industriepatriarch Johann Gottfried Brügelmann die Spinnerei, führte Zweigunternehmen und tätigte Geld- und Warengeschäfte mit der ganzen Welt. Brügelmanns lebten in dramatischen Zeiten. Sie erlebten den Untergang des ancien Régime, die Französische Revolution, den Aufstieg und Fall Napoleons und die Machtverteilung eines neuen Europa nach dem Wiener Kongress. Die einzelnen Biografien der Fabrikantenfamilie stehen für den Wandel des Bürgertums in diesen Zeiten der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Umbrüche. Auch die dritte Generation stellte um 1850 schließlich die Weichen für eine neue Zeit. Nciht nur die Männer, sondern auch die Frauen der Familie Brügelmann hatten dabei entscheidenenden Anteil am Erfolg des Unternehmens.

This book charts the connections between the language of journalism in England and its social impact on audiences and social and political debates from the first emergence of periodical publications in the seventeeth century to the present day. It extends work done on the language of the media to include an historical perspective, adding to wider contemporary debates about the social impact of the media. It draws upon the field of historical pragmatics, while retaining a concentration on the development of a particular form of media language, the newspaper, and its role in refracting and contributing to social developments. Dialogue is created between sociolinguistics and journalism studies. It is ideally suited to advanced students in these areas and in linguistics and media studies in general.

Aufgrund der fortschreitenden Europäisierung des Privatrechts rückt die Methodenlehre des Europäischen Privatrechts stärker in den Mittelpunkt rechtstheoretischen Denkens. Vor diesem Hintergrund erarbeitet Thomas Henninger rechtsvergleichend methodische Prinzipien des Europäischen Privatrechts. Zunächst untersucht er die existierenden Methodenlehren in den wichtigsten Ländern Europas insbesondere in Deutschland, der Schweiz, Frankreich, Großbritannien und am EuGH. Dabei legt er jeweils die gesetzlichen Methodennormen, historische Entwicklung, exemplarische Urteile, Rechtsprechung, wissenschaftliche Lehre und das methodische Selbstverständnis der Richter zu Grunde. Durch den Vergleich mit weiteren deutschsprachigen, romanischen, angloamerikanischen, skandinavischen und osteuropäischen Rechtsordnungen entsteht ein Gesamtbild der Methodenlehre in Europa.Im normativen Teil arbeitet der Autor die gemeinsamen Prinzipien einer Methodenlehre der europäischen Privatrechte heraus und stellt Lösungsansätze für eine europäische Methodenlehre des Privatrechts vor. Ein zentraler Punkt ist dabei der Vergleich der Methode kontinentaler Zivilrechtskodifikationen mit der präjudiziengestützten Fallrechtsmethodik in England und die Darstellung gemeinsamer Prinzipien. Abschluss des Buches bildet eine Methodennorm, welche – vergleichbar mit Art. 1 des schweizerischen Zivilgesetzbuches – die Tätigkeit des Richters in einem europäisch geprägten Privatrecht definiert.

Justice and Rights is a record of the fifth "Building Bridges" seminar held in Washington, DC in 2006 (an annual symposium on Muslim-Christian relations cosponsored by Georgetown University and the Church of England). This volume examines justice and rights from Christian and Muslim perspectives—a topic of immense relevance for both faiths in the modern world, but also with deep roots in the core texts of both traditions. Leading scholars examine three topics: scriptural foundations, featuring analyses of Christian and Muslim sacred texts; evolving traditions, exploring historical issues in both faiths with an emphasis on religious and political authority; and the modern world, analyzing recent and contemporary contributions from Christianity and Islam in the area of freedom and human rights.

This first examination in almost forty years of political ideas in the seventeenth-century American colonies reaches some surprising conclusions about the history of democratic theory more generally. The origins of a distinctively modern kind of thinking about democracy can be located, not in revolutionary America and France in the later eighteenth century, but in the tiny New England colonies in the middle seventeenth. The key feature of this democratic rebirth was honoring not only the principle of popular sovereignty through regular elections but also the principle of accountability through non-electoral procedures for the auditing and impeachment of elected officers. By staking its institutional identity entirely on elections, modern democratic thought has misplaced the sense of robust popular control which originally animated it
