This article is a pilot study in which we analyzed interviews with 16 inhabitants of the Tel Aviv area. We show that Israeli adults' views of refugees are shaped by the political discourse of threat and otherness. Yet the findings also suggest that individuals may resist the prevailing discourse and advocate for refugees' inclusion within Israeli society through the welfare regime. Thus, a gap is revealed between two perspectives that reflect current conflicting perceptions of social inclusion, the immigration regime, social rights in regard to African refugees and the character of current-day Israeli society.

Alan Hirsch comments on the draft White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection issued by the South African government in November 2023. The government wants to make laws still tighter when it is unable to implement existing laws. He finds that what is proposed simply won't help and suggests what could be done to fix the urgent need for better migration policy.

Jugendliche, deren Eltern im Alltag ein rigides Sanktionsverhalten praktizieren, werden auch überproportional häufig von den Gleichaltrigen geschlagen und verprügelt. Auf der Basis einer Befragung von über 2000 Jugendlichen wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Mechanismen für den Zusammenhang von elterlichem Erziehungsverhalten und den Opfererfahrungen Jugendlicher bedeutsam sind. Dabei wird davon ausgegangen, dass das elterliche Erziehungsverhalten Spuren im Alltagshandeln und im Auftreten von Jugendlichen hinterlässt. Diese Verhaltensweisen erhöhen dann die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass Jugendliche zum Opfer von Gewalthandlungen Gleichaltriger werden. Das komplexe Zusammenspiel dieser Faktoren wird zunächst bivariat und anschließend in einer Modellrechnung überprüft. Abschließend wird gezeigt, dass Opfererfahrungen als kritisches Lebensereignis auf der einen Seite und die alltägliche Angst, Opfer einer Gewalttat zu werden, als zeitlich überdauernder Stressor auf der anderen Seite, sich im Wohlbefinden der Jugendlichen niederschlagen und mitverantwortlich für gesundheitliche Beeinträchtigungen sind." In recent years, Catalonia has experienced asignificant in flux of international immigrants, added to the already important internal migration flows of prior decades. Now, however, this immigration takes place in a political and social context in which Catalan is the language of official use in all branches of government administration as well as in the education system. Knowledge of the Catalan language has been consideredan essential part of the process of integration for the immigrant population residing in Catalonia. Using the data provided by therecent 2007 National Survey of Immigrants, this article analyzes the immigrant population's knowledge of Catalan in relation totheir knowledge of Castilian (Spanish). The data indicates that inspite of the offi cial status of the Catalan language in Catalonia,knowledge of Catalan among immigrants to the region is relatively low and much lower than that of Castilian, a situation that invitesrefl ection on the social implications of this reality. ; En los últimos años ha llegado a Cataluña un volumen muy importante de inmigrantes extranjeros, que vienen a añadirse a la importante inmigración de periodos anteriores pero ahora en un contexto político y social en el que el catalán es la lengua oficial tanto por parte de la administración pública como por parte del sistema de enseñanza. El conocimiento del catalán se ha considerado un elemento esencial en el proceso de integración de la población inmigrada en la sociedad catalana. Utilizando losdatos proporcionados por la reciente Encuesta Nacional de Inmigrantes del 2007, este artículo analiza el grado de conocimiento del catalán que manifi esta la población inmigrada, siempre en relación al conocimiento del castellano. Los datos indican que a pesar de la situación de oficialidad de la lengua catalana, su conocimiento es relativamente bajo y mucho menor que el del castellano, una circunstanciaque invita a reflexionar sobre las implicaciones socialesde esta realidad.

AbstractEmploying the theoretical framework of transnationalism, this study closely examines how the transnational kinship networks played out in various aspects of the Chinese businesses in Chicago, through reconstructing the transnational Chinese businesses during the period from the 1870s to the1930s. Utilizing primary sources in both English and Chinese, in particular the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) Chicago Chinese Case Files (CCCF) and Chinese gazetteers, it also demonstrates how the Chinese community in Chicago served as a vital link of the transnational migration and business networks and a center of commerce and trade in the American Midwest during this period.

This article reports findings from a literature review of facilitators and barriers to domestic violence service seeking among American Muslim women. Racial, cultural, and ethnic differences were also examined. Facilitators and barriers to domestic violence service seeking were (1) cultural perceptions of abuse; (2) religious perceptions of abuse; (3) children; (4) feelings of embarrassment, fear, and shame; (5) immigration status and language barriers; (6) education level; (7) knowledge and perception of services; and (8) informal supports and support systems. However, the extant literature does not fully capture the diversity of American Muslims. Implications for future research are discussed.

The concepts of cultural diversity and cultural identity are at the forefront of the political debate in many western societies. In Europe, the discussion is stimulated by the political pressures associated with immigration flows, which are increasing in many European countries. The imperatives that current immigration trends impose on European democracies bring to light a number of issues that need to be addressed. What are the patterns and dynamics of cultural integration? How do they differ across immigrants of different ethnic groups and religious faiths? How do they differ across host societies? What are the implications and consequences for market outcomes and public policy? Which kind of institutional contexts are more or less likely to accommodate the cultural integration of immigrants? All these questions are crucial for policy makers and await answers. This book aims to provide a stepping stone to the debate. Taking an economic perspective, this edited book presents a current, comparative picture of the process of cultural integration of immigrants across Europe. It documents the main economic debates on the causes and consequences of cultural integration of immigrants, and provides detailed descriptions of the cultural and economic integration process in seven main European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It also compares the European context with the integration of immigrants in the United States.

La superación de un conflicto armado no sólo debe ir acompañada de un proceso de entrega de las armas y juicio a los perpetradores de los delitos; también supone identificar y corregir las causas estructurales de la violencia. Por ello, el objetivo de este artículo es analizar la inclusión de los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales (desc) en la justicia transicional. La hipótesis desarrollada es que, a pesar de las dificultades para dar eficacia plena a los desc, la justicia transicional, como un escenario político en disputa, puede permitir la construcción de memoria histórica en torno al desconocimiento de los derechos sociales, juzgar estas violaciones y adoptar políticas públicas. Para dar respuesta a esto, en un primer momento se aborda la relación entre desigualdad social y el conflicto colombiano. Posteriormente, a través de las experiencias de otros países, se expone cómo influye la justicia social y redistributiva sobre la justicia transicional. Por último, se retoma el caso de Colombia para explicar la convergencia entre el reconocimiento legislativo y judicial, centrando el estudio en la justicia transicional como escenario que puede promover las demandas de DESC.

We explore the role of the transfers that UK regions received from the European structural and cohesion funds, as well as other economic and social factors, in determining the support for the Remain vote in the Brexit referendum. We .nd that past European transfers have played virtually no role in the referendum. Economically strong regions tend to be in favor of remaining in the EU. Somewhat surprisingly, the intensity of immigration from the EU is positively correlated with the Remain vote.

Immigration to the Nordic countries has increased significantly in the last 40 years (Pettersen & Østby 2013:76). Although exact data are hard to come by, it is clear that the term integration, albeit vague and often undefined, has become central in public and political debates. A central premise of most of the debates is the claim that newly arrived immigrants and refugees have not become part of their host societies to a satisfactory extent. Subsequently, an increasing number of initiatives and laws have been introduced in the Nordic countries with the intention to promote integration. (.)
