For just over fifty years John Stuart Mill contributed articles and letters to the newspapers, setting before the public a radical position on contemporary events. From 1822 to 1873, in newspapers as widely read as The Times and the Morning Chronicle, and as narrowly circulated as the True Sun and the New Times, he praised his friends and damned his opponents, while commenting on a while range of issues at home and abroad, from banking to Ireland, from wife-beating to land nationalization.His main series of newspaper writings concerned France (especially during the first four years of the Revolution of 1830) and Ireland (especially during December 1846 and January 1847, when various proposals for relief of the starving cottiers were being debated). Mill felt himself peculiarly fitted to explain French affairs and Irish solutions to the non-comprehending and wrong-headed English.But his pen was wielded wherever he say stupidity and narrowness, and he found them in astonishingly varied areas. He tried to explain to his obdurate countrymen the first principles of law reform, political economy, relations between the sexes, democracy, international law, and much more.Virtually none of these texts have been reprinted before this volume. The Introduction by Ann Robson sets the items in their historical and personal perspective, and draws out the implications for Mill's life and thought. This reflection on writing is set in motion by an analogy between the images of a researcher at his desk and a man freefalling into space. I ruminate through my story of discovering autoethnography and consider how I had to negotiate my personal history, reluctant body, and sexual orientation in order to fully participate in the healing pilgrimage I chose to study. My encounter with the intensity of the gesture of suffering in a crucifix taught me about the emotional risk of this kind of work. Later, I learned how to immerse myself in the scene as I rewrote the narrative until I could finally realize in my life the humility of listening to my experience.

The experience of imprisonment is central to the political history of apartheid and postapartheid South Africa, and the documentation of that experience has long been a cornerstone of South African literary production. Prison memoirs and poetry chapbooks number in the dozens, while the specter of the prison hangs over the entire corpus of apartheid-era fi ction and drama. The subgenre of prison literature has been subjected to extensive scrutiny in journal articles and book chapters by David Schalkwyk, Judith Lutgë Coullie, Barbara Harlow, J. U. Jacobs, and others. Curiously though, despite this proliferation of literary and scholarly output, no booklength analysis of South African prison literature as a whole has yet been published.

Amidst the powerfully democratizing, public spheres of Web 2.0, life writing has taken on new geographies and forms of mobility through webcomics. As an experi-mental mode of self-representation, webcomics are part of an urgent, digital turn in autobiographical writing, where speaking to one's personal experiences also takes place within the social economies of the Internet. This paper analyzes webcomics as a compelling new dimension of autobiographical illness narrative, using Allie Brosh's webcomic blog, Hyperbole and a Half, as its case study. Launched in 2009 on the free blog platform, Blogspot, Brosh's deceptively simplistic aesthetic and comically dark representation of mental illness has since amassed near-cult following online. Draw-ing on the discipline of life writing and from comics studies, I aim to position Brosh's webcomics within the field of graphic medicine and to explore how they might expand conventional understandings of illness within this contextual frame. Brosh's work is a significant precursor to hybrid forms of illness narrative still emerging from digital spaces — this paper asks how webcomics capitalize on both the affordances of the Internet and the aesthetic of comics to connect audiences across vast distances with collective experiences of everyday illness.

It unpicks the complex triangulation of shame, gender and writing, and intervenes forcefully in feminist and queer debates of the last three decades. Starting from the premise that shame cannot be overcome or abandoned, and that femininity and shame are utterly and necessarily imbricated, Writing Shame examines writing that explores and inhabits this state of shame, considering the dissonant effects of such explorations on and beyond the page.
