"Unlike other books on the Arab uprisings of 2010-2011 which focus on why they occurred, this book looks instead towards the future of three countries - Syria, Libya and Yemen - where the violence and instability initiated by the uprisings persist. It additionally examines the case of Iraq which continues to suffer from a precarious political situation introduced by the US led invasion of 2003.The book investigates what should be done to achieve inclusive political and economic development and eventually a lasting peace. It describes the particular circumstances in each of the four countries, and analyses the common challenges facing them such as the need to achieve economic diversification, control inflation, raise employment levels, husband fiscal expenditures, control corruption and implement transparent policies. This book explores the experience of immigration enforcement for women who have been detained in immigration detention in the UK. Drawing upon in-depth interviews with women who have been in immigration detention centres, Dignity, Women, and Immigration Detention demonstrates how immigration detention violates women's sense of dignity and in doing so, causes women to suffer pains that are incongruent with the administrative purpose of immigration removal centres.The women interviewed were either detained in an Immigration Removal Centre, had spent time in this centre before being released into the UK community, or had been removed to Jamaica following time in immigration detention. This book argues that the current system used by the UK government is unfit for purpose and damaging to many of those who are ensnared within it. In examining dignity violation, lack of autonomy and diminishment, the book also considers possible alternatives to the current practice of incarceration and what can be done to alleviate the harms that are currently inflicted on women during the process of immigration enforcement in the UK. "This book explores the relationship between Vikings, Rus' and nomadic (mostly Turkic) steppe dwellers during the course of the Viking Age (c. 750-1050) in a geographical area stretching from Eastern Scandinavia through the Kievan Rus', Byzantium, the Islamic world to the Western Eurasian steppes. The primary focus is the steppe influence on the development of Scandinavian-Rus' culture. It illustrates the effects of Turkic (nomadic) cultures on the evolving Scandinavian-Rus' communities in their military technology and tactics, as well as in everyday customs, ritual traditions and religious perceptions, whilst paying attention to the politico-commercial necessities and possible communication channels tying these two cultures, normally considered to be distinct, together. "If evolutionary economics is to compete with neoclassical economics as a general-purpose economic theory, it needs to incorporate new aspects of socioeconomic reality, such as institutions of all types, including technical, scientific, and political. "The historical context of colonisation situates the analysis in Children, Care and Crime of the involvement of children with care experience in the criminal justice system in an Australian jurisdiction (New South Wales), focusing on residential care, policing, the provision of legal services, and interactions in the Children's Court. While the majority of children in care do not have contact with the criminal justice system, this book explores why those with care-experience, and Indigenous children, are over-represented in this system. Drawing on findings from an innovative, mixed-method study - court observations, file reviews, and qualitative interviews - the book investigates historical and contemporary processes of colonisation and criminalisation. The book outlines the impact of trauma and responses to trauma, including inter-generational trauma caused by policies of colonisation and criminalisation. It then follows a child's journey through the continuum of care to the criminal justice system, examining data at each stage including: the residential care environment; interactions with police; the provision of legal services; and experiences at the Children's Court.
