This article explores critically whether the liberal feminist understanding of women's situation under conditions of patriarchy (in its critique of liberal philosophy) has the potential to uncover the complex nature of the (legal) harm inherent to gender-specific sexually explicit material. By virtue of the fact that liberal feminism has emerged from classical liberal theory, this school of feminism appears to struggle in balancing the interests of a free, equal and democratic society with the pressing interests of women to live in a society which is free from both direct and indirect gender-specific violence. Liberal feminism's often uncritical acceptance of classical liberal principles would appear to render it virtually incapable of appreciating (female) sexuality as a social construct. And as a consequence, sexually explicit speech is not per se deemed sexist or harmful to women, because mere images are not understood to have the capacity to cause harm. Accordingly, to justify legal intervention, harm must either be imminent and directed against women specifically, or must constitute the advocacy of hatred that constitutes incitement to cause harm. Seen in this context, this article seeks to determine whether liberal feminism could conceptualise sexually explicit material as a violent mode of expression within a South African constitutional context.

Skin-lightening is an aesthetic practice of global concern. By adopting a biopsycho-social approach, we consider the interplay between the biological, psychological and social factors that underpin the circulation and consumption of skin lighteners in South Africa. This paper reflects on biological aspects of skin lightening, interpersonal relationships, individual beliefs and expectations about the maintenance of health and well being that informs cosmetic practices. The paper seeks to examine claims made by historians (Thomas) and political philosophers and activists (Biko) that colonialism and apartheid in South Africa historically reinforced the use of skin lightening products in the country. The paper also investigates the role of media in staking out the boundaries of beauty. We argue that men and women practice skin-lightening not only as a complex result of the internalization of global standards of beauty, but meshed with a national politics of race and colorism. Banning skin lightening products without understanding the biological effects but also the social forces that underlie their increased popularity will prove futile. Moreover, we must consider the immeasurable pleasures associated with lightening, and the feelings with achieving visibility in South Africa, a country that continues to wrestle with blackness.

Sexual and reproductive rights of women are widely violated and abused in Africa, partly because of numerous gender-based cultural and traditional practices. All these practices exist to varying extents in many African countries—including South Africa. The Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution has several provisions that relate to the protection of sexual and reproductive rights of women, but the Constitution also provides for the right to culture, which allows for traditional and cultural practices—some of which violate certain human rights norms including the sexual and reproductive rights of women. International and constitutional protection notwithstanding, such rights can only be realised and enjoyed if they are given force through constitutional, legislative and judicial measures. This paper explores these three measures. A conceptual understanding of sexual and reproductive rights is presented, before the international dimension of those rights is discussed. The constitutional and legislative framework relating to the relevant cultural practices is then interrogated—before case law from the application and interpretation of that framework in relation to women's sexual and reproductive rights is analysed. The paper argues that despite the constitutional, legislative and judicial attempts to minimise the clash between cultural practices and the sexual and reproductive rights of women in South Africa, the violation and abuse of such rights still abounds. The paper concludes that legislative intervention does not go far enough, that the courts should be more proactive and assertive on the issues concerned, and that a much more holistic approach—including advocacy, human rights education, a change of patriarchal mind-sets, and political will—is urgently needed.

This paper is a critical examination of women's roles in the West African civil conflicts of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Cote d'Ivoire. Our epistemological point of departure is that women perform significant combat roles in war situations. Scholars/analysts have focused on women as solely victims of wars, but this study presents a framework that distances itself from this view and presents information on the wide variety of women's involvement in conflicts. Thus, whilst the public life of politics that comprises war-making decision is being dictated by men, women are involved in many other roles in the field. Consequently, this study addresses the following research conundrums: What factors explain the increased 'feminization of the militarization process' associated with conflicts in West Africa? Are women voluntary partners in war or are they reluctant actors being manipulated by ruthless army officers/warlords? What are the implications of women's active involvement in conflicts for the future development of women in these countries under focus, and society at large? What are the current and prospective roles of women in mediation and post-conflict peacebuilding
