Wasburn compares U.S. commercial news reports on a wide variety of events with those produced by the news media of several other nations. The events include the Falklands War, the Iran-Iraq War, the Tiananmen Square Uprising, several political assassinations, major trade disputes between the U.S. and Japan, the Intifada, U.S. presidential nominating conventions and a presidential inauguration. Different patterns of coverage--amount of attention given an event, language used to describe an event, selection of particular occurrences to characterize an event, and descriptions of U.S. and international public opinion of the event--are shown to reflect different political, economic, and strategic interests of nations, historical contexts in which news was constructed, national differences in values that influence the production of news, and differences in historically specific relations between news media and the governments of their countries. Attention is given to contrasts between the national image of the United States constructed by U.S. commercial news media and the images of the United States produced by various foreign news media.

• Summary:This article presents a study of working methods used by social workers within the personal social services (PSS), in their work with clients. The study is part of a larger research project with the aim of describing and analysing how specialized respectively integrated forms of organizations in the PSS condition social workers' interventions and client effects (outcomes). The study was carried out in three Swedish municipalities with different organizational models. Two of those represent 'extremes' as they have pure specialized (divided in different types of units) respectively integrated (generic) organizations. The third municipality has chosen a middle way with an organization that combines aspects of the two other models. All social workers within the PSS in those three municipalities were included in the study.• Findings:Our findings among other things show 1) that the use of unspecific methods dominates, 2) that several methods that are reported as specific are definitely not specific, 3) that specific methods often are used in free and unspecific ways, 4) that there seems to be a compensating movement (regarding use of methods) with the aim of evening out limitations in the formal PSS organizations, 5) that there are two relatively large groups of method users: 'improvisers' and 'eclecticists'.• Applications:One can neither understand the use of working methods in social work with clients by studying the methods as such nor by studying the evidence base of different methods. Social workers consider their relationships to clients and the clients' trust as much more important (in order to achieve results) than any particular method. The use of methods is mirroring the social workers' readiness before, and planned adaptation to, different types of situations.

Introduction / objective: the scarcity of resources for social investments requires strategies that increase the availability of information for decision-making. The Social Return on Investment (SROI) is a tool used for impact measurement and makes it possible to economically assess the effects of an intervention and identify the amount of change generated by each monetary unit invested. This index admits sensitivity analysis to recognize the aspects with the greatest influence on the impact of a project, so the objective of this work was to study the sensitivity of the SROI in the cocoa Territorial Laboratories of the University of Antioquia. Methodology: Through graphs, each of the changes was related to the SROI, identifying the highest levels of sensitivity in those whose values were located in quadrants 1 and 3 and whose trend line had an ascending performance. Results: The most sensitive variables were: the projection of income for 20 years, the increase in cocoa production, production above the break-even point, the satisfaction of basic and social needs, informal agreements for the succession of the production system, the initiation of soil conservation practices, the definition of activities to achieve the dream farm, and the implementation of the anthropogogical model of agricultural extension. Conclusions: Interrelationships were found between most of these variables and it was concluded that integral initiatives are the key to achieve greater social changes.

Starting with the premise that suburban films, residential neighborhoods, chain restaurants, malls, and megachurches are compelling forms (topos) that shape and materialize the everyday lives of residents and visitors, Greg Dickinson's Suburban Dreams offers a rhetorically attuned critical analysis of contemporary American suburbs and the "good life" their residents pursue. Dickinson's analysis suggests that the good life is rooted in memory and locality, both of which are foundations for creating a sense of safety central to the success of suburbs. His argument is situated first in a discussi.
The article considers the historic experience of state and public organizations' partnership in the struggle against the population' alcoholization by the example of establishing Boards of guardians on public temperance in the Russian state as a whole and in Ufa province in particular. The authors of the article pay special attention to the organizing public readings by the Boards of guardians on public temperance with the aim to spread sensible ideas concerning the harm of excessive use of strong drinks among the population; the substantiation of the necessity of reviving the institution of guardianship and its methodological instruments, used by the state and public organizations in carrying out educational activity in order to struggle against the population' alcoholization, has been given. The object of the research is the policy and practice of the Russian government in forming and improving the institution of guardianship in the sphere of public temperance in Ufa province (1865 – 1917) and the historic experience accumulated in this field. The aim of the research is to investigate the historic experience of forming the institution of guardianship on public temperance in Russia by the example of the activity in Ufa province in 1865 – 1917 on the basis of scientific analysis of archival and published sources. Relying on the concrete historic material, the authors set themselves as an object to elicit general regularities and regional peculiarities of the process of guardianship, to reveal the integrity and interdependence of its components. It has been exposed that the state policy in trading alcoholic drinks was accompanied by active, successive, diversified, legislatively formalized and methodologically supported basis. It was the activity of the Boards of guardians on public temperance on the territory of the Russian empire, in particular in Ufa province. It promoted to preventive and prophylactic measures, forming of the alcohol drinking culture among the population and, as a rule, decreasing of the index of its usage. Modern social and economic situation in Russia testifies to the necessity of reviving of the institution of guardianship by means of state and public partnership. This may be organizing of reading clubs, literary soirees in the system of cafes and restaurants, round tables in libraries, lectures and conferences on the theme in the Internet, creating of guardian groups in social nets. "Abortion and Reproductive Rights in Slovenia: A Case of Resistance provides a detailed and in-depth analysis of the situation of sexual and reproductive rights in Slovenia. This important intervention comes at a time when sexual and reproductive rights in Slovenia and around the world are assailed by populist and neoconservative discourses. The authors provide a detailed account of the history of the struggle for reproductive rights, particularly the struggles for access to safe abortion, insights based on interviews with fellow activists, and an analysis of Slovenian public opinion on abortion in a temporal and comparative perspective. The scholar-activist authors put the issue of sexual and reproductive rights at the forefront of the social, political, and scientific agenda in the name of collectivity and solidarity, reinforcing the potential apparent within civil society and social movements. This work will be of interest to researchers and activists with an interest in gender and reproductive rights in contemporary Europe"--
In the 1950s Brazil experienced transformative changes including the nascent emergence of democratic elections after 15 years of repressive dictatorship, the suicide of its President and the construction of a new federal capital city in Brasília. Optimism and a forward-looking spirit, summarized in the 1956 Presidential motto, "50 years of progress in 5," suffused all spheres of the national experience. The modernization of Brazil would translate into the end of underdevelopment and a structure of dependency put in place with colonialism. My dissertation explores this historical moment through the Rio de Janeiro-based geometric abstract art movement, Neoconcretism. I study how this group of artists intersected with and contributed to the growing network of modernizing institutions that held the promise of a Brazil finally "catching up." Influenced by early twentieth century European avant-garde art styles, Neoconcrete art brought together an art practice and theory based in expressiveness, intersubjectivity and sensorial experience, which continues to influence contemporary Latin American art production today. In this project I argue that Neoconcretism was a transformative cultural force that shaped Brazilian modernism and national culture. Neoconcrete artists and aesthetic ideals contributed to many areas of national production including literature, the newspaper industry, education, and architecture and urbanism. Departing from scholarship that examines Neoconcretism within the internationalization of Latin American art, I am especially attentive to the influence of local discourses on its stylistic and intellectual formation. Given the group's collaborative nature, I use an interdisciplinary and cultural studies methodology to examine the artworks and writings of the group members in relationship to the national project of modernization and nation-building developed by the governmental sectors, private institutions and the intellectual and cultural classes. My dissertation underscores the way culture operated as an essential political tool, distinct from traditional genres such as propaganda, in the production of the "national". The collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of the Neoconcretists structures the organization of the dissertation and each chapter is conceived as a dialogical relationship between members of the group and Brazilian society. Chapter one establishes the broader Brazilian concrete project, and positions the emergence of abstract art in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as directly tied to the developing political and social climate proposing the construction of a "new" Brazil. In chapter two I argue for the equally generative roles of word and image in the production of meaning in Neoconcretism through an analysis of Neoconcrete poetry and the two main theoretical texts that defined Neoconcretism. I demonstrate how the movement was marked by positions of anti-progress and anti-rationalism that challenged the dominant political ideology. Chapter three turns to the Brazilian newspaper, Jornal do Brasil, which served as a place of employment for Neoconcrete artists, as well as a place of publication and circulation of Neoconcrete artworks and writings. I argue for the paper's generative role as a site of publicity for the group and its significance as a place of translation between high art and popular culture. Chapter four puts Neoconcretism and the construction of Brasília into direct engagement to argue for the influence of the national architectural boom on the artistic production of the Neoconcrete artists, but also to demonstrate how their works performed a critique of the state-sponsored project of modernization. In the dissertation I argue that the study of Neoconcretism unsettles any single narrative of Brazilian modernism and provides a lens to re-evaluate Brazil's "Years of Confidence" and the making of the nation through industrialization
