The ecological threat posed by the more than 300,000 tonnes of chemical weapons dumped in the sea after the Second World War is one that demands the urgent attention of the international community. The amount dumped represents more than three times as much as the total reported chemical arsenals of the United States and Russia. The munitions were disposed of in the shallow depths of the Northern European seas - where fishing is actively pursued - in close proximity to densely populated coastlines, with no consideration for the long-term consequences. Despite its vital importance, the issue has never been adequately scientifically analyzed. Munitions dumped in the sea are not covered by the Chemical Weapons or other arms control treaties. The NATO Advanced Science Institute held in Kaliningrad in January 1995, the proceedings of which are reported here, was the first attempt at a comprehensive coverage of the problem of chemical munitions dumped in the sea, due attention being paid to chemical, biological, technological and legal aspects. Audience: While a few parts of the book are highly specialised, most of it will interest the general public as well as policy makers, journalists and engineers. This first publication devoted to the environmental problem at the European scale will be an eye opener for millions who never knew of the highly toxic dumps in their own back yard

Aus soziobiologischer Perspektive spricht nach Ansicht des Autors einiges dafür, die begriffliche Dichotomie zwischen traditionalen und posttraditionalen Gemeinschaften aufzugeben. Denn Gemeinschaften sind nicht deswegen traditional, weil sie seit längerem bestehen, sondern weil sie eine spezifische Funktion erfüllen, die sich im klassischen Sinne der Evolutionstheorie mit dem Stadium der Stabilisierung von Variationen erklären lässt. Diese Behauptung begründet der Autor durch drei Thesen: (1) Gemeinschaft als Universalie ist die Lösung des Reproduktionsproblems der menschlichen Gattung, d.h. des biosozialen Anschlusses. Alles Weitere ist Variation oder evolutionshistorische Marginalie. (2) Die Traditionalität von Gemeinschaften resultiert nicht primär aus überlieferten oder gewohnten Formen, sondern aus der Bewahrung ihrer reproduktiven Funktion, die jenseits des Tauschprinzips durch Vertrauen stabilisiert wird. (3) Die heutigen posttraditionalen Gemeinschaften sind - evolutionshistorisch betrachtet - Gemeinschaftsformen im Stadium der Variation. Was nach der Selektion von ihnen übrigbleibt und sozial relevant stabilisiert werden kann, ist noch offen. Aber mit der Reziprozitätsstabilisierung über Vertrauen und dem Reproduktionserfolg liegen vielleicht Ansatzpunkte vor, um diese Wahrscheinlichkeiten abzuschätzen. (ICI2)

This book investigates the language created and used on social media to express and respond to personal experiences of illness, dying and mourning. The authors begin by setting out the established and recent research on social and existential media, affect and language, before focusing on Facebook groups dealing with the illness and death of two Danish children. Through these in-depth case studies, they produce insights into different ways of engaging in affective processes related to illness and death on social media, and into both the ritualized and innovative vernacular vocabulary created through these encounters. Developing an analytical framework for understanding the social role and logics of "affective language" (such as emojis, interjections and other forms of expressive interactive writing), "The Language of Illness and Death on Social Media" will be of great interest to all those striving to understand the affective importance and roles of language for sharing experiences of illness, death and commemoration in these spheres.

The article presents an analysis of scientific performance of research and development organizations, which was conducted on the basis of a Database containing information about the performance of scientific organizations that perform research, development and technological work for civil purposes. The results of the analysis of performance indicators of scientific activities of organizations based on data for 2018 in research areas, in particular, the indicators of WoS publications, as well as the results of intellectual activity created and used by organizations, are presented.
