The volume aims at complementing the international literature on the interaction between Cicero and Greece. It offers new and unpublished material on Cicero's presence in Greece literally, deriving from his epistles, speeches and philosophical treatises, but also on his interaction with the Greek philosophical schools, the Greek language and politics, etc. Besides, it offers new knowledge on the appreciation and reception of Cicero and his texts by the Greek world from Late Antiquity to Byzantium and Modern Greece, based on material deriving from a variety of sources (papyri, manuscripts, compendia or encyclopaedias, imitations, translations, early editions, etc.), an aspect of the relationships between Cicero and Greece still understudied. The contributions examine the contrast between genre theory and practice, the interplay of genre interference and intertextuality, and the tension between convention and innovation. The focus is on the relationship of post-Augustan epic poetry to the earlier tradition, i.e. to authoritative predecessors such as Homer, Virgil and Ovid. The self-positioning of later poets in relation to the canon often goes hand in hand with an endeavour to reconfigure traditional elements: By omitting, varying or exaggerating aspects typical of the genre, their works enter into a dialogue with the earlier epics, permanently subverting the audience's horizons of expectation. The integration of non-genre discourses plays a central role here: modern literary concepts for analysing genre interference are critically evaluated in the anthology and incorporated into the interpretation in a reflective manner. The methodological range and innovative approaches in this volume make an important contribution to deepening and expanding the current state of research.

Die Berliner Neidhart-Handschrift R (mgf 1062 [Niederösterreich, ca. 1280]) enthält zehn Lieder, zu denen am Blattrand Strophen nachgetragen sind. Diese z.T. mit Zuordnungszeichen versehenen Randstrophen zeugen von einer Textvarianz, die bislang in keiner Ausgabe berücksichtigt wurde. Die vorliegende Studie erprobt an diesem begrenzten Textbestand Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Erschließung von Fassungsvarianten, die den erhaltenen Handschriften zeitlich vorausgehen. Einen Anhaltspunkt hierfür liefern die bereits im 19. Jh. konstatierten spezifischen Verteilungsverhältnisse von Wort- und Versvarianten in der Überlieferung. Diese nämlich führen zur Vermutung, dass die Neidhart-Überlieferung auf eine Vorlage mit Wahlmöglichkeiten zurückgeht – d.h. auf eine Vorlage, die zu einzelnen Textelementen alternative Lesarten bot, zwischen denen bei der Liedproduktion gewählt werden konnte. Its generic purview encompasses prose as well as poetic texts by both minor and major writers in the Latin literary canon, including the anonymous poems, Ciris and Aetna, and an elegy from the Tibullan corpus by the female poet, Sulpicia. Major figures include the Augustan poets, Vergil and Horace, and the late antique Christian theologian, Augustine. The method of analysis employed in the essays is uniformly interdisciplinary and reveals the depth of the engagement of each ancient author with major preoccupations of Epicurean thought, such as the balanced pursuit of erotic pleasure in the context of human flourishing and the role of the gods in relation to human existence. The phenomenon of labour takes the character of a prism. Labour is thereby always context dependent and constituted through the actions of all protagonists involved in any labour relationship. On the basis of three case studies in colonial German East Africa – the construction of the Central Railway (1905–1916), the Otto Plantation in Kilossa (1907–1916) and the palaeontological Tendaguru Expedition (1909–1911) – labour and labour relations are analysed. The focus lies on hitherto neglected actors and groups of actors of labour in the colonial context of East Africa. These were especially German companies and their staff, white subaltern railway sub-contractors and labour recruiters, Indian skilled workers and (qualified) East African workers. Furthermore, all three sites of labour proved to have their individual logics and characteristics. But all of them were in tension between the 'global' and the 'local', coercion and voluntariness, machine and manual labour, skilled and unskilled labour, reproductive and wage labour, as well as between black and white. The book offers, for the first time, a unifying terminology for D&I target setting in the UK screen industries, including for transorganisational D&I targets (targets set by one organisation for another). It is based on a cross-industry review of D&I target setting in the UK screen industries, using evidence from industry and academic research.

Deswegen wurde in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften aus Anlass des sechzigsten Geburtstags ihres Präsidenten versucht, diese unterschiedlichen Sichtweisen ins Gespräch zu bringen. Eine Altorientalistin und eine Sinologin, eine Neurologin und ein Quantenphysiker, eine Primatenforscherin und ein mediävistischer Germanist sprachen miteinander über Zeit in ihren verschiedenen Dimensionen; der Band vereint diese unterschiedlichen Gesprächsgänge, die von den Beteiligten nochmals gründlich durchgesehen wurden. The time span covered by The Routledge History of Fashion and Dress starts in the nineteenth century, with the aftermath of the consumers' revolution, and reaches all the way to the present. The fashion and garment industries have been international from the beginning and, as such, this volume looks at the history of fashion and dress through the lenses of both international and global history. Because fashion is also a multifaceted subject with humanagency at its core, at the confluence of thematerial (fabrics, clothing, dyes, tools, and machines) and the immaterial (savoir-faire, identities, images, and brands), this volume adopts a transdisciplinary perspective, opening its pages to researchers from a variety of complementary fields. Os edifícios desempenharam um papel importante na história soviética, desde o assalto ao Palácio de Inverno, em outubro de 1917, até à defesa da Casa Branca de Moscovo, durante a tentativa de golpe de estado de 1991. Nos anos 30, os «Velhos Bolcheviques» mudaram-se das «Casas dos Sovietes», antigos hotéis onde viviam de forma mais ou menos comunitária, para a «Casa do Governo», um grande edifício onde residiam em apartamentos de família, rodeados por guardas e criadas. E não foi só de edifícios realmente existentes que se fez a história da URSS, a qual se assemelhava a um grande apartamento comunitário. Esta coletânea inclui um artigo seminal sobre a União Soviética como uma federação multinacional, na qual diferentes repúblicas nacionais ocupavam quartos semiautónomos, seguindo-se um ensaio sobre a relação entre o amor jovem, os «Velhos Bolcheviques» e a domesticidade a que se viram condenados. How did communication take place in the mission between people of different cultural backgrounds? What interests did Jesuits, indigenous people and Spaniards pursue in the Gran Chaco border region in the Jesuit province of Paraguay? What dependencies arose as a result? The Jesuit Florian Paucke (1719-1780) provided answers to these questions in his treatise »Hin und Her«, in which he wrote about his experiences in the Paraguay mission. Ulrich Stober is the first to make the manuscript and the missionary's more than 200 watercolor drawings comprehensively accessible. On this basis, linguistic and cultural translation processes are examined with the aid of numerous archive materials. The focus is on the missionaries' engagement with the indigenous language, diet and clothing as well as different ideas of gender roles. Even if Paucke adopted a genuinely European perspective in this respect, it is central that indigenous lifeworlds framed and shaped the questions of the European actors. - Wie fand Kommunikation in der Mission zwischen Menschen unterschiedlicher kultureller Prägung statt? Welche Interessen verfolgten Jesuiten, Indigene und Spanier_innen im Grenzgebiet Gran Chaco in der Jesuitenprovinz Paraguay? Welche Abhängigkeiten entstanden dabei? Ulrich Stober erschließt erstmals grundlegend das Manuskript sowie die über 200 Aquarellzeichnungen des Missionars. Auf dieser Basis werden unter Heranziehung von zahlreichem Archivmaterial sprachliche und kulturelle Übersetzungsprozesse betrachtet. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Auseinandersetzung der Missionare mit der indigenen Sprache, Ernährung und Bekleidung sowie unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen von Geschlechterrollen. Auch wenn Paucke diesbezüglich eine genuin europäische Perspektive einnahm, ist zentral, dass indigene Lebenswelten die Fragen der europäischen Akteure rahmten und formten.

This volume explores the production of knowledge of normativity in the age of early modern globalisation by looking at an extraordinarily pragmatic and normative book: Manual de Confessores, by the Spanish canon law professor Martín de Azpilcueta (1492-1586). Intertwining expertise, methods, and questions of legal history and book history, this book follows the actors and analyses the factors involved in the production, circulation, and use of the Manual, both in printed and manuscript forms, in the territories of the early modern Iberian Empires and of the Catholic Church. It convincingly illustrates the different dynamics related to the materiality of this object that contributed to "glocal" knowledge production.
