Presents several activities from a political science course, Human Rights/Human Wrongs, to demonstrate the value of a service-learning course that blends academic rigor with service & blends community-based experience into the political science classroom. Service learning challenges students to leave their comfort zones to accomplish hands-on work with people within the community. Students were required to apply theoretical knowledge to political asylum cases in the York County Prison, INS detention facility. Cases from Haiti, Nigeria, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Togo, & Liberia were studied with the assistance of the Coalition for Immigrants Rights at the Community Level. A successful program can help students to revisit their prejudices & stereotypes. To successfully carry out such a program, a strong working relationship between the faculty member & the community partner must be developed. 8 References. L. A. Hoffman

A special form of social impact assessment has evolved to observe and measure the impact of science on society. A system of social impacts of science indicators has been developed to represent these complex patterns and relationships. The causal relevance of science to social performance depends on our capacity to link the complex knowledge system of modern science to the achievement of social goals. (Abstract amended)

The UK government aims to increase the role of social enterprise as a vehicle to deliver public services directly to citizens and local communities. This chapter explores small social enterprises' experience of public service procurement in the UK including the introduction of the Social Value Act 2012. To understand small third sector social enterprises' experiences of gaining access to public services contracts, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 11 chief executive officers (CEOs) using an interview guide. Empirical evidence obtained suggests that some procurement policies and processes are impacting on these organizations' developments, growth, partnership arrangements and value creation.

Examines the impact of social movement organizations (SMOs) & interest groups on public policy, arguing that their influence is constrained by electoral competition & limits on the ability of citizens/legislators to address multiple issues at the same time. Legislators pay attention to the wishes of the majority of their constituents, & SMOs cannot have a direct impact on policy if they are in conflict with the majority over issues the public cares about. However, SMOs can directly influence policy on issues the public is not particularly interested in, & indirectly influence policy by relating information to elected officials & administrative agencies, as well as by working to change the public's policy preferences or the intensity of their concerns. An examination of the activities of SMOs & interest groups in the context of theories of democracy leads to the conclusion that there is no theoretical justification for distinguishing between them; hence, their abilities to impact public policy are roughly the same.
