AbstractTwo aspects of democratic self-governance are analyzed: Collective self-governance, or the authority of citizens over one another, and individual self-governance, referring to the ability of each citizen to govern her/his own beliefs and actions. Individual self-governance is thought to require some level of autonomy on the part of individual citizens, and authenticity of personal preferences and desires. Beliefs about autonomy and authenticity in Roman Catholic and Islamic theology are considered, and these perspectives are applied to the problem of restricting certain types of discourse, based on the content of that discourse. While censorship if usually considered to be incompatible with democratic governance, Catholic and Islamic perspectives on individual self-governance suggest the possibility that some forms of censorship may enhance, rather than detract from citizen autonomy and authenticity, and enhance the possibility of positive collective self-governance.

Cette contribution cherche d'abord à comprendre pourquoi la religion refait surface dans le débat sur la citoyenneté en Allemagne ; ensuite, à montrer comment l'islam est compatible avec la citoyenneté allemande. L'appartenance religieuse a été progressivement déconnectée de la citoyenneté. Si, d'une certaine manière, l'Allemagne a dépassé la fracture historique entre catholiques et protestants, un nouveau clivage religieux apparaît maintenant entre musulmans et non-musulmans. Dans quelques cercles populistes et d'extrême droite, la réponse est un « non » très ferme. La réponse du gouvernement fédéral – présente aussi dans le discours libéral et de gauche – est un « oui » prudent. Ces deux réponses peuvent se réclamer de la même tradition historique qui définit la citoyenneté à partir d'un « citoyen universel » et libéré des barrières religieuses. Cette émancipation de la religion est interprétée par les seconds comme la reconnaissance à tous des mêmes droits constitutionnels, indépendamment des attaches religieuses ; pour les premiers, « le citoyen universel allemand » est nécessairement « chrétien » (mais sans distinction d'une Église particulière). L'éducation religieuse islamique officielle est un outil pour intégrer les musulmans allemands dans la société allemande et dans la compréhension qu'elle donne de la citoyenneté. Le droit à l'éducation religieuse islamique, garanti par la Constitution, va de pair avec la citoyenneté. Pour le gouvernement fédéral, l'introduction de l'éducation religieuse islamique dans le programme des écoles publiques de quelques États fédérés ( Länder ) est une tentative très prudente d'accorder aux musulmans allemands les mêmes droits qu'à leurs compatriotes non musulmans. Ce n'est pas pour autant une offre désintéressée : le gouvernement vise à exercer un certain contrôle sur ce qui est enseigné aux citoyens musulmans en Allemagne. C'est une forme spécifique d'islam soutenu par l'État et qui appartient à l'Allemagne : un « islam musulman allemand ». L'islam « importé » est souvent enseigné par des imams étrangers ; cet islam n'est pas celui que l'administration allemande appelle de ses vœux quand elle déclare que « l'islam appartient à l'Allemagne ». L'éducation religieuse islamique officielle est un outil pour intégrer les musulmans allemands dans la société allemande et dans sa compréhension de la citoyenneté. Le droit à l'éducation religieuse islamique, garanti par la Constitution, va de pair avec l'acceptation de cette Constitution ; les adversaires de cette éducation religieuse accusent d'ailleurs les musulmans d'ignorer cette contrepartie. La religion est ainsi redevenue un moyen (discursif) pour inclure ou exclure certains groupes religieux du « bien sacré » des droits de la citoyenneté allemande.

While religious politics have been a widely discussed topic in the social sciences in recent decades, few studies develop general explanations based on systematic and detailed comparative analysis. This article seeks to explain when and how successful religious parties rise. To that end, I comparatively analyze the politicization of German Catholicism in the second half of the nineteenth century (1848—1878) and Turkish Islam in the post-1970 period (1970—2002) and briefly examine the negative case of nineteenth-century German Protestantism. According to the theory of revival-reaction-politicization I propose, successful religious parties rise when major religious revivals confront social counter-mobilization and state repression, provided that existing political parties do not effectively represent religious defense. The study's findings challenge the pervasive tendency to treat Christian and Islamic politics as incommensurable.

This book focuses on reconnecting with the lost rich humanitarian content of the Qur'an through a hermeneutical investigation of al-Khidr's story. Through an active engagement with primary and secondary sources, the book provides a new analytic reading of this puzzling Qur'anic story. By reinvestigating the largely overlooked pluralistic message in the Qur'an, the book debunks an Islamic fundamentalism, which often uses the text as a justification for ill-informed choices that can be easily seen to drag the Qur'anic text in unexpected directions. It introduces current academic controversies over proper addressing of critical issues in Islamic heritage and goes beyond mystic romanticization to clarify blind spots in reading al-Khidr's story. Through rethinking al-Khidr's story, the book addresses the exegetical classical and modern attempts to reconcile the Qur'anic unconditional endorsement of the right to life for everyone regardless of their faith, with the perplexing reference to infidelity as a justification for killing found in chapter 18. The Qur'nic Dilemma will be of interest to all scholars of Islamic Studies or those interested in Qur'anic interpretation, Muslim ethics, or comparative theology.

Today, two-thirds of all Arab Muslims are under the age of thirty. Young Islam takes readers inside the evolving competition for their support--a competition not simply between Islamism and the secular world, but between different and often conflicting visions of Islam itself. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research among rank-and-file activists in Morocco, Avi Spiegel shows how Islamist movements are encountering opposition from an unexpected source--each other. In vivid and compelling detail, he describes the conflicts that arise as Islamist groups vie with one another for new recruits, and the unprecedented fragmentation that occurs as members wrangle over a shared urbanized base. Looking carefully at how political Islam is lived, expressed, and understood by young people, Spiegel moves beyond the top-down focus of current research. Instead, he makes the compelling case that Islamist actors are shaped more by their relationships to each other than by their relationships to the state or even to religious ideology. By focusing not only on the texts of aging elites but also on the voices of diverse and sophisticated Muslim youths, Spiegel exposes the shifting and contested nature of Islamist movements today--movements that are being reimagined from the bottom up by young Islam. ZusammenfassungDer Artikel beschäftigt sich mit Formen und Transformationen religiöser Konkurrenz in islamisch geprägten Gesellschaften. Dabei wird auf die soziologische Feldtheorie zurückgegriffen, um eine feldtheoretische Lesart von Konkurrenzkämpfen um 'den' Islam und 'den' Muslimen unter den Bedingungen autoritärer Nationalstaaten zu entwerfen. Aus dieser Perspektive geraten nicht nur die staatlich-religiösen Akteure des institutionalisierten Pols im Islam (Traditionalisten, Modernisten) in den Blick, sondern auch die mit ihnen konkurrierenden islamistischen und salafistischen Gegenpole, die als neue religiöse Akteure auftreten und in ihren jeweiligen nationalstaatlichen Kontexten unterschiedliche Profile, Allianzen und Organisationsweisen aufweisen. Am Beispiel Marokkos fragt dieser Beitrag dann nach den Bedingungen, die bestimmte Formen konflikthafter Konkurrenz (Überbietung) begünstigen, und nach deren Folgen. Die feldtheoretisch geleitete Rekonstruktion der Logik und Dynamik der Auseinandersetzungen im religiösen Feld in Marokko lässt drei Phasen von den 1970er-Jahren bis heute unterscheiden: Während in einer ersten Phase (1974–2001) religiöse Konkurrenzkämpfe zwischen allen Akteuren häufig im Modus der gegenseitigen Überbietung ausgetragen wurden, in einer zweiten Phase (2001–2011) Repression und Versicherheitlichung den Interaktionsmodus im Feld bestimmten, prägen in der aktuellen dritten Phase (2011–2024) staatliche Prozesse der Renationalisierung und Verrechtlichung bei gleichzeitiger politischer Integration islamistischer Akteure die Konkurrenzdynamik im religiösen Feld. Ziel dieser feldtheoretischen Überlegungen ist es, einen Beitrag zum Verständnis ungeregelter Formen der Konkurrenz in nationalstaatlichen Feldern des Islam zu leisten und diese auf ihre möglichen Folgen hin zu befragen, nämlich die Förderung neuer und die Verfestigung alter autoritärer Konkurrenzstrukturen (Überbietung) auf beiden Seiten – Staaten wie islamistischen Bewegungen –, die sich gegenseitig legitimieren und demokratische Formen der Konkurrenz- und Konfliktaustragung verhindern.
