Developing Social Science Data Archives

The development of social science data archives since the 1960s is traced, with reference to the archives of the British Economic & Social Research Council. Over time, the data archives were transformed from dormant information repositories into active data distributors, to accommodate the changing needs of social scientists. Reasons for the growth of data archives in European & North American countries are analyzed, & their advantages & weaknesses considered. Projects on data storage techniques & intercomputer communications are described, & their implications for the future direction of data archives examined. 1 Table, 3 Figures. I. Shagrir
