"The corporate business enterprise is a core institution of capitalism. It holds immense political, economic, and cultural power in society. It mobilizes social and planetary resources to its utility in pursuit of private profit maximization and with little regard for social concerns. Its influence over so much of societal life and effects on the natural environment raise critical questions about the firm and its governance in democratic society. Various voices seek reforms of regulation and corporate governance practices to those shaped by the neoliberal policies persisting in the current decades. But prospects for amelioration within our current horizons of thinking appear elusive. This book contributes a distinctly social theoretical approach to the social problem of governing the firm. Its discussions complement debates in economics, politics, and law. Its critical social theorizations challenge conventional understandings of the firm and neoliberal legitimacies of its governance and posit alternatives. The book explores the social relations and moral fabric of the firm and the creativity of human action at work. It proposes a reimagined corporate governance premised on just recognition of that social vitality. It invites unprecedented collaboration for a robust participatory democracy for governing the firm and market action oriented to ecological and social sustainability"--
"Leadership has become among the handful of most critical elements for business success in the knowledge era. Companies increasingly compete on the strength of their intellectual capital, those intangibles but priceless assets that reside in the people and processes of the firm. But even the strongest intellectual capital base can be worthless if not guided by leaders at all levels of the organization. And having leaders at all levels requires a constantly renewing pipeline of new leaders. The problem is, the pipeline at most companies is bone dry. Companies invest in leadership development programs and establish elaborate succession frameworks, but don't knit the two together nor take into account the fact that talented people are often recruited away. They prepare leaders in the image of the existing leaders, assuming those same skills will be meaningful into the future - when, in fact, most companies don't have a clue about what skills will be needed of their leaders in the future"--
"This ground-breaking handbook leads the way in accelerating the transition to a sustainable circular economy by introducing the concept of a catalyst as a positive and enhancing driving force for sustainability. Catalysts create and maintain favourable conditions for complex systemic sustainability transition changes, and a discussion and understanding of catalysts is required to move from a linear economy to a sustainable and circular economy. With contributions from leading experts from around the globe, this volume presents theoretical insights, contextualized case studies, and participatory methodologies, which identify different catalysts, including technology, innovation, business models, management and organisation, regulation, sustainability policy, product design, and culture. The authors then show how these catalysts accelerate sustainability transitions. As a unique value to the reader, the book brings together public policy and private business perspectives to address the circular economy as a systemic change. Its theoretical and practical perspectives are coupled with real-world case studies from Finland, Italy, China, India, Nigeria, and others, to provide tangible insights on catalysing the circular economy across organizational, hierarchical, and disciplinary boundaries. With its broad interdisciplinary and geographically diverse scope, this handbook will be a valuable tool for researchers, academics, and policymakers in the fields of circular economy, sustainability transitions, environmental studies, business, and the social sciences more broadly"--
"A small but growing number of individuals in the West identify themselves as news avoiders and are turning away from traditional news organizations. For news avoiders, news as reported by the mainstream press is not worth their time or emotional energy, not relevant to their lives, too partisan, or not to be trusted. Even in the last few years as news has seemed particularly pressing, people are increasingly avoiding it as revealed in a recent surveys. In Avoiding News: Reluctant Audiences for Journalism, Rasmus Nielsen, Ruth Palmer, and Benjamin Toff examine the reasons behind news avoidance, its impact, and what, if anything, can be done about it. Their work is based on interviews and surveys with more than 160 news avoiders in Spain, the UK, and the United States. The authors examine how news avoiders get information - social media, friends and family, alternative news sources - and how they develop "folk theories" about how news organizations work. They also consider the ways in which race, class, and gender shape people's ideas about news and how news avoidance affects already disadvantaged communities. The authors conclude that news avoidance is a problem for civil society and has contributed to the recent rise of reactionary populism in the West. To confront the problem of news avoidance a variety of efforts are needed that not only change the content of the news but seek to understand and address individuals' habits and views about news organizations"--
