A review of Knowledge & Skills for Life: First Results from the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2000. In its analysis of student performance in 32 countries on reading, math, & science, this OECD report assesses the interaction of various factors influencing the development of these skills in the school & at home. It includes an important discussion on gender difference in schooling across different countries. It revives the discussion of the relationship of class & family background to educational attainment, a relationship that almost disappeared from educational discourse after the 1960s. The report has policy implications for the allocation of resources within & between schools in relation to the socioeconomic characteristics of the student body. M. Pflum
