The report aims to analyse the developing institutional basis at the European level for the Trust in Food, involving the construction and redefinition of the European 'consumer' and 'consumer interest', in relation to the organisations and interests involved in food provisioning. Based on a view of trust as a relationship between parties, the report aims to analyse the changing distribution of responsibilities between parties as represented at a European level for five key food issues: safety, nutrition, quality, value and ethics. · The report aims to analyse changes in regulatory policies in relation to food provisioning, particularly following the BSE episode, as a key indicator of institutional change at the European

International audience ; his article intends to analyse the Moroccan journalistic field since the 1990s using a relational sociology looking at its news businesses and showing their strong dependence on the economic and political fields. This initial analysis of the paper and electronic non-specialised press (and its managers) is based on five main issues. The first recalls the history of the non-partisan press and the trajectories of social and political protest within it since independence, showing how the Moroccan field of power has restricted both the press supply and its potential audiences. The second part describes, on the one hand, the explosion of the supply of information on paper titles since the 1990s, and digital press, especially since 2011, and, on the other hand, the gradual expansion of its audiences, especially in Arabic. The following sections extend the analysis of the contemporary configuration through the restructuring of the very political economy of this small market of non-partisan "press enterprises". First of all, its structural weaknesses explain the intensity of the political stakes around the official/unofficial modes of financing of the press and the difficulties to find profitable "economic models". Then, we explain this interpenetration of the economic, political and journalistic fields in the analysis of the professional, political and social trajectories of the main investors of this new press, showing the weight of their political and social capital. Finally, the relative closure of this market is seen even more through the oligopoly of advertising market, largely related to the field of power, which weighs very directly on the working of press companies.

"Themes and Flux in British Politics provides readers with an engaging and informative overview of the development, change and turbulence in British politics today. It explores the extent to which the 'old approaches' to politics and policy are becoming less relevant in the contemporary and emerging UK environment and makes sense of the most significant aspects of the moment: political and electoral alignment, referenda, Brexit and the EU, relationship between UK and devolved governments, and key impact related developments internationally. As such, it is an essential read for students and observers of British political life who need pointed, expert coverage to help make sense of these exceptional political times. With a tripartite structure, the book first examines trends in political representation with changes in political engagement, party loyalties and electoral alignment, then places this within the turbulence and changing landscape of the policy / political environment, and finally contextualises the developments in British politics vis a vis international resonances and parallels. Case studies of Scottish independence referendum, referendum to remain or the leave the EU and the EU withdrawal process are used to illustrate the key concepts and arguments advanced and to provide a sense of the current dynamic of British politics. Themes and Flux in British Politics represents a timely response to contemporary debates about the major shifts (perhaps crises) of political parties and representation and the turbulent landscape of public policy and will be essential reading for British politics and government, Brexit, Public Policy, and EU Politics"--
In the 1980s, Western European nations have been more successful in co-operating on security policy than ever before. Challenges from both the Soviet Union and the United States have triggered new approaches to the old problem of a distinct European defence - among them the European answer to President Reagan's SDI concept, the Western European Uni

This book interprets the meanings of the uses, regulations, and representations of the ocean undertaken by the state and other societal power sources in modern Taiwan between 1949 and 2016. Following Michael Mann's historical sociology and Philip Steinberg's political geography, the book analyses the construction of the ocean by the society of Taiwan in terms of ideological, political, military and economic sources of power. It also provides a structural foundation for creating a framework of the politics in maritime and ocean affairs through the lens of an interpretive analysis of the modern Taiwanese construction of the ocean. Moreover, it explores the social constructions of the ocean through the written works of intellectuals in natural sciences, social studies and humanities in Taiwan after the 1980s. Succinctly revealing how Taiwanese society has influenced the social construction of the ocean, this book will appeal to scholars and students interested in Taiwanese politics and history, political geography and Asian politics.
"This book presents a comprehensive account of the COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the novel coronavirus pandemic, as it happened. This volume examines the first responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, the contexts of earlier epidemics and the epidemiological basics of infectious diseases. Further, it discusses patterns in the spread of the disease; the management and containment of infections at the personal, national and global level; effects on trade and commerce; the social and psychological impact on people; the disruption and postponement of international events; the role of various international organizations like the WHO in the search for solutions; and the race for a vaccine or a cure. Based on new data and latest developments, the second edition of this volume explores the global spread of COVID-19 since 2019 and examines the emergence of the evolving coronavirus variants (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron). Further, it extensively discusses what we have since discovered on the disease, along with recent progress on treatments and vaccines. Authored by a medical professional and an economist working on the frontlines, this book gives a nuanced, verified and fact-checked analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and its global response. A one-stop resource on the COVID-19 outbreak, it is indispensable for every reader and a holistic work for scholars and researchers of medical sociology, public health, political economy, public policy and governance, sociology of health and medicine, and paramedical and medical practitioners. It will also be a great resource for policymakers, government departments, and civil society organizations working in the area"--
The history of genetic engineering is inseparable from the development of risk management policies, and the first standards regulating genetic manipulation were established towards the end of the 1970s. However, although the idea of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been a topic of heated public debate for more than twenty years, the term itself is multivalent in the extreme. The expression "genetically modified" is not so much a scientific term as an oversimplified description of modifications made to biological systems. It is mainly a category used for legal purposes that has come into common parlance, but scarcely reflects the biological complexity involved or the diversity of the technological processes used. Its widespread use among the public has masked its multivalency as well as the need for a sense of proportion in assessing the potential risks of products manufactured by genetic engineering. This has raised serious issues in terms of information and communication, in that order. Uses of the term GMO should be based on very exact definitions that will vary depending on techniques. The communicational issue is becoming increasingly acute with the emergence of new techniques for biological modification that are likely to be assessed according to the current socio-legal model for GMOs, even though some are producing organisms that cannot be distinguished from natural variants. These practices therefore call both current legal definitions and communication strategies into question. They also underline the multivalency of the term "genetically modified", which has different meanings depending on whether it used as a legal or biological term or in common parlance.
