What are the prospects and likely future direction of European integration? Will it be marked by resilience and perhaps even deepening integration among European Union (EU) member states, or will it encounter further instability that could lead to fragmentation and disintegration? The answers to these questions are currently unknown but are important not just for the citizens and countries of the EU but for world politics more broadly. Scholars and other observers have advanced a range of arguments to answer these questions, many of which are derived from the three mainstream theoretical paradigms of contemporary International Relations (IR): realism, liberalism, and constructivism. These arguments reveal disagreement both within and across paradigms over the question of the EU's future. While it is commonly thought that realists are generally pessimistic and liberals and constructivists broadly optimistic regarding the EU's future prospects, it is possible to identify arguments derived from liberal IR theory that the EU faces possibly fatal challenges and realists who see powerful reasons for the EU to stick together, while there are constructivists who think it can go either way. There are thus six basic positions on the future of the EU derived from IR theory. This paper identifies and evaluates a broad range of causal forces that will affect the future of European integration. The paper concludes by discussing the enduring role and value of theory in the study of international relations.

Having raised the question of whither the international at the end of International Relations a few years ago, this article treats the state of International Relations theory as a continuing endist issue for discussion. Of interest is the restructuring of the field in the post-Cold War years, partly as a result of debates about epistemologies and partly in light of the failure of realisms to lead International Relations to the door of the Soviet and Eastern Bloc collapse, which many thought it could. As the world globalized, so did International Relations, turning itself into a field of differences — theoretical, geographical, philosophical, methodological, and so on. Is this the end of International Relations or its new afterlife? I argue that there are signs that old topics of International Relations, like war, are being taken up in new ways and in new collaborations, such as those that feminist International Relations has forged. At the same time, many camps display the old International Relations tendency to elevate abstract thinking above quotidian international relations, even in the face of clear evidence that the agency of people played a major role in shifting Cold War and Middle East configurations of power. International Relations' camps should strive less for their own distinctive analysis and more for communication with colleagues, ordinary people making today's international relations and policy proponents.

Les spécialistes de la politique étrangère canadienne ont longtemps pensé que la relation entre le Canada et les Elats-Unis était unique. La théorie des relations internationales commence à remettre en cause cette conception. Nous résumons l'évolution de la théorie des relations internationales et nous examinons dans quelle mesure elle se retrouve dans les travaux récents sur les relations canado-américaines. Nous mettons en lumière deux courants de cette théorie: l'un découlant du modèle « intégration-transnationalité-interdépendance » et l'autre découlant du modèle « système-économie mondiale-dépendance ». Nous nous demandons dans quelle mesure ces deux courants, l'un appelé vertical, l'autre horizontal, contribuent à l'étude des relations canado-américaines. Nous analysons plusieurs volumes et plusieurs articles publiés récemment sur les relations canado-américaines et nous nous demandons dans quelle mesure les deux courants diffèrent au point de vue des postulats, des variables indépendantes et dépendantes, des méthodes et des conclusions. Nous présentons en conclusion quelques suggestions sur la portée théorique de l'étude des relations canado-américaines.

As it is known, nowadays neorealism is one of the most influential trends in international relations' theory, which proposes a systematic explanation of the development of international relations and pragmatic understanding of national and international security. Using achievements of neorealistic school, it is possible to create relevant foreign policy and security strategy for the Ukrainian state, which makes the research in this area particularly topical.

The question of relevance of international relations theory must be approached through an awareness of the distinctiveness of various perspectives' relations to existing structures of power. It becomes, in effect, a matter of asking for whom & for what purposes of practical action the theory is or is not relevant. Critical theories of international relations, ranging from modernist to poststructural forms, share a commitment to challenging the naturalness of the existing world order & the acceptability of its dominant relations & practices of power. Critical theory focuses analysis on the effects of power on the differential ability of actors to control their own circumstances. It also goes beyond that theoretical contribution to provide impetus for practical political action in challenging, confronting, & disrupting existing relations of power. Thus, in the contemporary era, critical IR theory is relevant, among other ways, as a stimulus to resist empire in its many guises. Adapted from the source document.
