The US-based Liberian diaspora's role in the country's 14-year civil war and its aftermath is paradoxical. Consistent with existing literature on the role of diasporas in conflict, the group largely played a role contributing to the outbreak of the Civil War and its continuation. However, in a paradigmatic shift, the group is currently contributing towards the peace-building process by serving as norm entrepreneurs. Factors that have contributed to this shift include a strong demand in the homeland for a change in the 'rules of the game', a shift in US foreign policy towards promotion of democracy in Africa, and a concerted regional and international effort at promoting peace-building norms. The inclusiveness of the mechanisms for norm transfer, the conduct of the messengers and local perception of norms, affect the degree to which they are well received. An optimistic report on a mission by churchmen, led by archbishop Wako, to discuss a peaceful settlement of the civil war with a delegation of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, led by Joseph Oduho. The basic problem confronting Sudan is said to be the persuasion of southern politicians to agree on a system of administration for their region. (DÜI-Asd)

After a long process of peace negotiations the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed on 9 January 2005 between the Government of Sudan (GOS) and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A). The CPA raised initial hopes that it would be the foundation block for lasting peace in Sudan. This book compiles scholarly analyses of the implementation of the power sharing agreement of the CPA, of ongoing conflicts with particular respect to land issues, of the challenges of the reintegration of internally displaced people and refugees, and of the repercussions of the CPA in other regions of Sudan as well as in neighbouring countries. Examines traditional (motherist) & cultural feminist ideology behind women's peace groups, arguing that both fail to adequately challenge the patriarchal hierarchy, as they promote a concept of femininity innately more peaceful than masculinity. As an alternative, ecofeminism proposes that exploitation is essentially exploitation of the feminine; the Earth, the weak, the poor, & the Other are all symbolically feminine. It is concluded that women are concerned with peace not because they are naturally different from men, but because they & their symbols are usually the recipients of violence. 7 References. M. Growing numbers of young people in diverse nations are participating in cross-cultural year of service programs. This paper provides an overview of global trends in the cross-cultural year of service, and a more detailed literature review of two such programs: AmeriCorps*NCCC and the Peace Corps. Drawing upon the ecological model of human development, the theory of emerging adulthood, and the lens model of service-learning, this paper proposes a cross-cultural year of service theoretical model to inform the work of researchers, policymakers, and community development practitioners concerned with year of service programs.
