Ethnographic Approaches and International Refugee Law
In: Journal of refugee studies
ISSN: 1471-6925
AbstractInternational refugee law permeates a plethora of international, national and local arenas and is developed, interpreted and applied by a wide range of very different actors. In this diversity of contexts, how do we best study the role and place of this body of law? This article advocates for the application of ethnographic approaches in the study of international refugee law, where the positivist legal approach heavily dominates the field. It argues that ethnography's contribution to knowledge on international refugee law lies not only in its methods, but also in its perspectives on questions of power, knowledge, reflexivity and subjectivity. The article illustrates the value of the ethnographic approach through three vignettes focusing on (i) the concept of 'refugee'; (ii) refugee rights-claiming and rights-mobilization; and (iii) actors and processes in the creation and spread of international refugee law norms.
The construction of masculinity in international relations
International politics is characterized by a lack of women. The few women holding high political positions are more likely to be criticized and judged based upon, what the author calls, 'the construction of masculinity in international relations'. Tracing the origin and logic of this construction, the article critiques the dominant theories of international relations (namely, realism and liberalism) and argues for the aptness of a radical feminist social constructivist approach to the study of international politics. The article also illuminates the strong focus on men and men's perspectives of these influential mainstream theories on their conception and interpretation of war. An examination of the concept of war reveals how masculinity and femininity are portrayed on matters of war and national security and what side effects this has on women in politics, particularly women with political positions.

ON THE IDEA OF AN INTERNATIONAL BANTUSTAN
In: Review of African political economy, Volume 71, Issue 24, p. 129-131
ISSN: 0305-6244
THE CLASSIFICATION OF UGANDA AS AN INTERNATIONAL BANTUSTAN IS SUBJECT TO DEBATE. THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NOTION OF INTERNATIONAL BANTUSTANS IS USEFUL, NOT BECAUSE IT SIMPLY HIGHLIGHTS A PARTICULAR FORM OF DEPENDENCY, BUT ALSO BECAUSE IT DRAWS ATTENTION TO A WIDER FORM OF CORPORATIST RACISM IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. ON THE OTHER HAND, BY USING SUCH AN EXPRESSION PEOPLE ALSO LEGITIMIZE THE TRANSFER OF A TERMINOLOGY WHICH ENCOURAGES A VIEW OF AFRICA AND AFRICANS THAT, WITH ITS ROOTS IN WHITE SOUTH AFRICA, IS INNACCURATE, MISLEADING, OVERGENERALIZED, AND, AT HEART, A COLONIAL CONSTRUCT.
Essays on external imbalances and international trade ; Essais sur les déséquilibres extérieurs et le commerce international
This thesis empirically investigates commonly accepted theories in international economics. Do flexible exchange rates really help reducing external imbalances? Does globalisation always put downward pressure on production prices and markups? Does trade favour high-skilled workers at the expense of lower-skilled workers in advanced economies? The first chapter explores determinants of sustained and sizeable current account adjustments, based on a selection model to jointly assess determinants of current account reversals and their magnitude. These determinants include exchange rate regimes, as well as financial integration variables and structural policies. The second chapter highlights cross-industry heterogeneous responses of prices, productivity and markups to increased foreign competition. In the case of anti-competitive responses, two leads are investigated: market concentration and quality upgrading to address competition from low-wage countries. The third chapter presents an Input-Output decomposition of changes in employment into three channels: final consumption, trade and technology. This decomposition indicates drivers of skill-biased changes in employment in the case of France.
