"This book takes a case study approach to explore the crisis of legitimacy in American political culture. The question of legitimacy resides at the heart of any political system. However, understanding why an individual should recognize another's power over them is not solely limited to the analytically political but is deeply embedded in the larger cultural context of any society. Through a series of ethnographic case studies focused on the United States - from those involving the rhetoric of presidential prophecy and abuse of power to the dispute over a local sewerage authority's reach and a case of classroom blasphemy - the book aims to demonstrate both a ground-up approach to the problem of legitimacy and to capture some of the common cultural features that bond the examples together. It will be of interest to scholars of anthropology, sociology, political science and socio-legal studies"--

A report on the New Zealand's electorate views in 1963 on a range of social and political issues as well as aspects of voting behaviour, party allegiance and attitudes to political leadership. Some of these attitudes may be related to core values that might now repay further inquiry about the extent to which they have been changed by circumstances and the priorities of practical politics in the anxious 1980s. The saliency of issues like the welfare state, the power of public servants, the practicality of full employment and the desirability of alliances with nuclear powers has intensified, while the importance of issues like the extension of licensing hours has declined in response to changing social conditions. "Donald J. Trump's presidency has delivered a seismic shock to the American political system, its public sphere, and to our political culture worldwide. Written by leading scholars across a range of disciplines, as well as professionals in the field of political journalism, this collection of essays offers a deeper understanding of Trump and the impact that his rise to power has had both domestically and worldwide."--
In this important book, well known Comparativist, Howard J. Wiarda, traces the long and controversial history of culture studies, and the relations of political culture and identity politics to political science. Under attack from structuralists, institutionalists, Marxists, and dependency writers, Wiarda examines and assesses the reasons for these attacks and why political culture went into decline only to have a new and transcendent renaissance and revival in the writings of Inglehart, Fukuyama, Putnam, Huntington and many others.
