Dispersion characteristics in the Western Mediterranean are analyzed using data from Coastal Ocean Dynamics Experiment (CODE) and Surface Velocity Program (SVP) surface drifters deployed in the period 1986–2017. Results are presented in terms of absolute dispersion A2
(mean-squared displacement of drifter individuals) and of relative dispersion (D2; mean square separation distance of drifter pairs). Moreover, the dispersion characteristics are estimated for different initial separation distances (D0) between particles: smaller, larger,
or comparable with the internal Rossby radius of deformation. Results show the presence of a quasiballistic regime for absolute dispersion at small time scales and the nonlocal relative dispersion regime related to the submesoscale activities for scales smaller than the internal Rossby radius.
At intermediate times, two anomalous absolute dispersion regimes (elliptic and hyperbolic regimes) related with the flow topology are observed, although the relative dispersion involves the Richardson and shear/ballistic regimes only for D0 smaller than the Rossby radius. During
the subsequent 20–30 days, absolute dispersion shows quasirandom walk regime and relative dispersion follows the diffusive regime for scales larger than 100 km for which pair velocities are uncorrelated.

U.S. POLICYMAKERS HAVE BECOME INCREASINGLY AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF PERCEPTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES ABROAD, NOT LEAST IN THE MILITARY DOMAIN, BECAUSE IT IS NOT STRENGTH THAT DETERS BUT THE PERCEPTION OF STRENGTH. USIA SURVEYS SUGGEST THAT AMERICA'S PROBLEM WITH PERCEPTIONS AMONG WEST EUROPEANS IS NOT SO MUCH ANTI-AMERICANISM AS OPPOSITION TO U.S. POLICIES. A LARGELY UNAPPRECIATED CASE IN POINT IS THAT THE GREAT MAJORITY IN THE COUNTRIES SURVEYED OPPOSE A NUCLEAR DEFENSE AGAINST A CONVENTIONAL ATTACK - THE CORNERSTONE OF U.S. STRATEGY FOR WEST EUROPEAN DEFENSE. COMMUNICATIONS PROFESSIONALS MUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO EXAGGERATE THE EXTENT TO WHICH INTERNATIONAL TENSION REFLECTS MISPERCEPTIONS OF U.S. POLICIES. MUCH OF THIS DERIVES NOT FROM MISUNDERSTANDING BUT FROM REAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST - NEEDING, FOR THEIR RESOLUTION, NOT BETTER COMMUNICATION BUT BETTER NEGOTIATIONS.

"Middle-class Values in India and Western Europe discusses the distinctive attributes of the middle classes in France, Germany and India. The construction of new norms of respectability is a universal feature of the middles classes, though their rhetoric has varied in different societies. Drawing on historical experiences in both western Europe and colonial India, the contributors to this volume try to understand the common inheritance of these newly emerging middle classes and the social and political impact they have had on their societies of origin. Each study is based on detailed research and combines both theoretical and empirical material. The book is divide into three sections. The first section, 'The Rise of the Middle Class in India and Western Europe' has three chapters and they dwell on the middle class and secularization; the middle classes in twentieth-century India; and the values of the middle classes in Germany. The second section, 'Class Formation in the Twentieth Century' contains four essays which discuss the character of the Indian middle class; middle-class values and the creation of a civil society; the 'Grand Ecoles' in France; and the changing social structure of the German society and the transformation of the German bourgeois culture. The last section, 'Values and Orientations' consists of five papers on the Indian middle class and explore the cultural construction of gender in urban India; the Dalit middle class; the political orientation of the middle classes; the politics of the middle classes and their shifting class values."--Provided by publisher

By the fall of 2023, the military campaign in Ukraine had become an integral part of the international political and economic landscape. When the current conflict ends, whatever the outcome for its direct participants, it is the countries of the World Majority whose positions will strengthen the most―not only China, which is often mentioned as the winner of the confrontation between Russia and the West, but a group of countries that previously played a subordinate role but are now gaining freedom of action.
