This article is rooted in the understanding that global ideas of liberal democratic peace and the gendered dynamics of peacebuilding need to be confronted. The aim is to explore the challenges of localizing liberal democratic peace by exploring efforts such as those undertaken by women's organizations in Bosnia-Herzegovina to promote a gender-just peace. The Dayton Peace Accord was the new "social contract" that set the standard for postwar societies. The gendered hierarchies built into this peace and the absence of women in the peace process created a "peace gap" that was gendered despite the fact that gender empowerment has become a standard tool in international peacebuilding. The post-Dayton peace process was characterized by a conservative backlash which has become a hallmark of women's postwar experience. Adapted from the source document.

In the battle between war & peace, war always seems to emerge victorious. Though peace is a universally held wish, war is constantly present. The reasons for war's continued success are varied yet obvious: conflicting interests, financial gain, competing nationalisms, political identity, unstable political structures, historical hatred, unsuccessful negotiation, & the contradictory relationship between peace & justice. If peace is to be gained, a simple solution of compromise must be adopted. Unfortunately this simple solution seems virtually impossible to embrace, particularly in the Middle East. K. Larsen

THE NEW BRITISH GOVERNMENT THAT WILL TAKE OFFICE IN 1997 FACES THE DIFFICULT TASK OF RE-ESTABLISHING THE CREDIBILITY OF THE PEACE PROCESS IN NORTHERN IRELAND. IT MUST DO SO AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF INCREASED POLARIZATION BETWEEN THE PROTESTANT COMMUNITY, WHICH LARGELY FAVORS CONTINUED UNION WITH BRITAIN, AND THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY, WHICH GENERALLY WANTS CLOSER LINKS WITH THE IRISH REPUBLIC. INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS ARE WAITING TO SEE IF A COMBINATION OF THE NEW WESTMINSTER GOVERNMENT, THE SECOND CLINTON ADMINISTRATION, AND THE IRISH GOVERNMENT FORMED AFTER THE REPUBLIC'S 1997 GENERAL ELECTIONS CAN PERSUADE THE PARTIES IN NORTHERN IRELAND TO REACH A POLITICAL SETTLEMENT THAT WILL ENSURE LASTING PEACE.

Tourism is an important aspect of the contemporary international commerce. It accounts for a significant share of the foreign exchange of many nations, especially those with a thriving tourism sector. While scholarly works abound on the economic, cultural and social values of tourism, there has been a debate as regards the utility of tourism as an enabler for peace. This paper interrogates the pacific import of international tourism against the backdrop of the growing significance of the tourism sector globally. By way of a qualitative analysis of secondary data, anchored on the theory of internationalism, the paper interrogates the tourism-peace nexus in the light of emerging insights, positing that international tourism holds potentials that could be leveraged towards promoting international peace and stability.

THIS ARTICLE TAKES A CLOSE LOOK AT THE PROCESS OF PEACE IN LIBERIA AND QUESTIONS THE MEANINGFULNESS OF THE JULY 1997 VOTE, LIBERIA'S NEWFOUND POLITICIAL STABILITY, WHETHER THE LIBERIANS ARE TRULY ON THE PATH TO DEMOCRACY AND DEVELOPMENT, AND WHETHER ONE CAN RAILROAD PEACE. THE ARTICLE ALSO REVIEWS THE 1997 CAMPAIGN AND ELECTION AND EXAMINES THE POLITICIAL UNCERTAINTY OF THE POST-ELECTION PERIOD. IT ALSO DISCUSSES EX-FIGHTERS AS A THREAT TO STABILITY, LIBERIA'S DIM ECONOMIC PROSPECTS, THE STRUGGLE OF POVERTY, AND WHETHER THE PROGRESS THAT LIBERIA HAS MADE IN RECENT MONTHS IS SUSTAINABLE.

PEACE STUDIES COURSES SHOULD INCREASE STUDENTS' KNOWLEDGE OF FACTS, BUT FACTUAL KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO PROMOTE ATTITUDE CHANGE, MORAL DEVELOPMENT, AND A HUMANIST PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE THAT EMPHASIZES VALUES AS WELL AS FACTS. EVERY PEACE STUDIES COURSE SHOULD BE EVALUATED AT INTERVALS, AND THE RESULTS OF THESE EVALUATIONS SHOULD BE INCORPORATED INTO SUCCESSIVE COURSES.

From the perspective of two Australian academics, who have encountered ignorance, apathy, bemusement, or resistance from colleagues to the concept of peace history, this article takes a critical look at the reasons for engaging in such research. After defining the term and briefly outlining the development of peace history overseas (especially in the United States, where it even exists as an officially recognized subfield of inquiry), a review is conducted of how leading peace historians have hitherto justified their endeavors. Some of these justifications are found tenable, others somewhat dubious. In the second half of the article additional arguments, those not usually made explicit, are advanced to support the claim for a special study area dealing exclusively with peace movements and peace cultures.
