It is surmised that five kinds of social movements will be important in the 21st century: (1) thematically singular expressions of protest against perceived disadvantageous developments; (2) large mass movements aiming at broad cultural & political changes; (3) civilian initiatives & lobbying organizations to supplement governmental organizations or basic social structures; (4) politically, socially, & religiously motivated solidarity movements; & (5) modern civil rights movements that attempt to offer alternative social visions to be realized through established political bodies. Current institutionalization processes also suggest that it will be difficult for left-wing emancipatory movements to establish an identity in opposition to the mainstream, whereas right-wing movements may appear misleadingly fresh & powerful in contemporary social democracies. Potential member sources for left- & right-wing movements are discussed, & important themes (eg, general social questions & labor issues) are listed. The need for social movements to appear a step ahead of society &, thus, to reestablish a lead regarding their modernity in relationship to society is addressed. S. Paul

Examines the influence of social movements on the development of the process of European politics & addresses the questions of whether the European Union will represent an opportunity or a threat to social movements, & whether it will limit or expand the possibilities of social movements to influence politics. The questions of how European integration influences political possibilities to influence social movements on a national level & what influence social movements will have on the European political process are still unanswered. One thing is certain: European integration poses a great challenge to the social movement. 7 References. E. Sanchez

A structural theory of modernity that refers to the work of Talcott Parsons is used to analyze social movements that exhibit both modern & antimodern characteristics. It is argued that many social movements are in a dilemma in that they are both modern & postmodern. They simultaneously appeal to modern principles (eg, altering authority relations, emancipation, equality) & critique modernity (eg, criticizing economicization, resisting the rationalization of modern life). Examples include the women's movement (which is modern when it demands equal rights & antimodern when it formulates alternative structures) & the environmental movement (which both argues environmental justice & espouses a neoromantic "less is more" philosophy that disrupts the modern program of progress & a tangibly growing living standard). The possibility of the reinvention of the modern program by social movements such as the environmental movement is discussed. 46 References. Adapted from the source document.

(ICF2)
