This work proposes a definition of the notion of salience in sociolinguistics. Salient linguistic variants are those that are easily picked up by the listeners, and these stand in opposition to `invisible' variants, which are, even if they also show complex social stratification, completely ignored. Taking a quantitative angle, this work sees salience as a function of relative frequency differences, giving it an empirically testable operationalisation

A simultaneous analysis of the crystallite size and strain of xNiO·(1 - x)GDC nanopowders prepared in stoichiometric proportions of x = 0, 0.1, 0.2. to 1 was performed by a self-sustained combustion (SC) process and calcination of the thus-synthesized nanopowders at 600 °C. The nanopowders were examined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern using two approaches: integral breadth of multiple peaks (multi-line) with Pearson VII (PVII), and pattern analysis of powders through total adjustment of the diffraction peaks with the double-Voigt (V-V) method. The synthesis route and stoichiometric variation allowed a quantitative study using the global setting profile with Rietveld refinement and semi-quantitative analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) of nickel oxide (NiO) and gadolinium doped ceria (GDC) phases in the as-prepared and the calcined samples. The investigation of the microstructures of the nanopowders was further supported by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). ; Thanks to National Doctoral Scholarship (No. 63130223) for Foreigners in Chile CONICYT, Government of Chile, Santiago for financing to conduct and complete this work. ; Peer Reviewed
We study empirically the macroeconomic effects of an explicit de jure quantitative goal for monetary policy. Quantitative goals take three forms: exchange rates, money growth rates, and inflation targets. We analyze the effects on inflation of both having a quantitative target, and of hitting a declared target; we also consider effects on output volatility. Our empirical work uses an annual data set covering 42 countries between 1960 and 2000, and takes account of other determinants of inflation (such as fiscal policy, the business cycle, and openness to international trade), and the endogeneity of the monetary policy regime. We find that both having and hitting quantitative targets for monetary policy is systematically and robustly associated with lower inflation. The exact form of the monetary target matters somewhat (especially for the sustainability of the monetary regime), but is less important than having some quantitative target. Successfully achieving a quantitative monetary goal is also associated with less volatile output.
Economic, marketing, and legislative considerations are increasingly leading companies to take back and recover their products after use. From a logistics perspective, these initiatives give rise to new goods flows from the user back to the producer. The management of these goods flows opposite to the traditional supply chain flows is addressed in the recently emerged field of Reverse Logistics. This monograph considers quantitative models that support decision making in Reverse Logistics. To this end, several recent case studies are reviewed. Moreover, first hand insight from a study on used electronic equipment is reported on. On this basis, logistics issues arising in the management of "reverse" goods flows are identified. Moreover, differences between Reverse Logistics and more traditional logistics contexts are highlighted. Finally, attention is paid to capturing the characteristics of Reverse Logistics in appropriate quantitative models.
(BG)
