L'étude proposée ici sur le contenu et le sens de la médiation sociale et interculturelle s'appuie sur une analyse des pratiques – diffuses ou professionnelles – à la lumière des théorisations ou conceptualisations empruntées aux sciences humaines et sociales, plus particulièrement la psychosociologie, l'anthropologie culturelle, la psychanalyse. It is not particularly profound to note that one's choice of a professional career is related to unconscious motivational forces, and that a desire to become a physician may stem from a wish to conquer one's own illness and the inevitability of death. Once one becomes a physician his personal experience with illness may, but not by means necessarily, place him in the position of being empathetic with the sick patient. My purpose in this particular narrative is to review my experience with a life-long illness and to relate it to my longstanding psychiatric interest and work with patients with chronic disease. I trust the confessional quality will be instructive and not taken as maudlin or pseudo-Proustian.

The culture of the Indian child equips him well or poorly for edu cation in American schools, depending on how well his culture matches that of the American society which surrounds him. Motivation for school achievement, for instance, is poor by white standards among children of Indian tribes whose culture is based on co-operation rather than on competition. Innately, Indian children have about the same mental equipment as have white children, but their cultural status and experiences cause them to rank lower on educational achievement tests, especially in high-school subjects.—Ed.

Barrington Moore, Jr., one of the most distinguished thinkers in critical theory and historical sociology, was long concerned with the prospects for freedom and decency in industrial society. The product of decades of reflection on issues of authority, inequality, and injustice, this volume analyzes fluctuating moral beliefs and behavior in political and economic affairs at different points in history, from the early Middle Ages in England to the prospects for liberalism under twentieth-century Soviet socialism. The social sources of antisocial behavior; principles of social inequality; and the origins, enemies, and possibilities of rational discussion in public affairs—these are among the topics Moore considers as he seeks to uncover the historical causes of some accepted forms of morality and to assess their social consequences. The keynote essay examines how moral codes grew out of commercial practices in England from medieval times through the industrial revolution. Dabei wird weniger der Aspekt der sozialen Plazierung betont werden, obwohl den Familien eine in letzter Zeit wieder steigende Bedeutung bei der Plazierung ihrer Kinder im Statusgefüge der Gesellschaft zugefallen ist, mit all den Konsequenzen der direkten Statusvererbung und der sinkenden Mobilität. Vielmehr soll das Augenmerk auf einen anderen Aspekt der Interdependenzen zwischen Familie und Bildungssystem gelenkt werden, nämlich auf den des Zusammenhanges zwischen den Aufenthaltszeiten in Familie und (vorschulischen) Bildungsinstitutionen.
