Contemporary socialist criminologists concentrate their analysis of crime on production relations, ignoring the co‐determination of reproduction and thus the role gender plays in crime by men and women. The author argues that this omission has occurred by reason of the theoretical work of Marx and Engels, as well as other socialist "criminologists" of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The importance of the paper lies in its demonstration that the questions raised by these early socialist theoreticians are inadequate for developing a comprehensive theory of crime.

SUMMARY. This article sets the 'discovery' of child sexual abuse in context and reviews the key issues for doctors now that the Inquiry Report has been published. In particular the author focuses on the controversy over diagnosis and 'screening' Not only is there a need for clarity on these issues, but also a need to restore basic trust between doctors, parents and children. She also urges development of multi‐disciplinary training and working and explores the proposed 'special assessment teams', hut concludes that resources will he a major constraint

The author tries to give evidence of this thesis that, in the Federal Republic of Germany, neo-corporatist structures exist within the relationship of sport and state with respect to essential functions although this relationship is not commonly defined as neo-corporatist. Sport and state seem to be more dependent on each other than for example state and trade unions in the field of economics. Moreover, in the Federal Republic, neo-corporatist structures in the relationship between sport and state appear to be relatively stable compared to the field of economics.

FOCUSING ON GERALD FORD AND HIS SUCCESSORS, THE THESIS OUTLINES THREE STRATEGIES USED TO INFLUENCE PUBLIC OPINION: TAKING ONES CASES DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE, CONTROLLING THE MEDIA, AND UTILIZE OPINION LEADERS. THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT USE OF ALL THREE STRATEGIES IS THE OPTIMAL WAY OF GAINING AND KEEPING HIGH PUBLIC OPINION.

THE BREADTH OF CHANGE IN THE USSR UNDER GORBACHEV CANNOT BE QUESTIONED. BUT ONE CAN QUESTION ITS DEPTH AND ULTIMATE MEANING BY THE ONE CRITERION THAT COUNTS: HAS THE SOVIET UNION BECOME ANY LESS AN OPPONENT OF THE WEST OR OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OR ANY LESS FORMIDABLE AN OPPONENT? THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE INNOVATIONS MAKE SOVIET FOREIGN POLICY A TOUGHER CHALLENGE FOR THE USA, BUT THIS SHOULD NOT BE OVERSTATED. THE BASIC STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES, AS WELL AS THE BASIC OBJECTIVES, OF SOVIET POLICY REMAIN.

THE AUTHOR COMPARES GORBACHEV'S DIPLOMATIC STYLE WITH SADAT'S AND SUGGESTS THAT BOTH WERE PRACTICING A POLICY OF DECLINE. CLEVER POLICY INNOVATIONS CAMOUFLAGE DECLINE FROM FRIENDS AND FOES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. THE DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE DECLINE OF A REGIME ARE 1) A DETERIORATION IN NATIONAL STRENGTH; 2) A RECASTING OF NATIONAL GOALS TO MAKE THEM MORE MODEST AND ATTAINABLE; AND 3) A REINTERPRETATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT TO MAKE IT APPEAR LESS THREATENING. ANOTHER ASPECT OF DECLINE IS CRITICISM OF PAST MISTAKES BY PRESENT LEADERS.

THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS THE WAYS IN WHICH CAPITALIST DEVELOPMENT HAS UNDERMINED MANY FAMILIAL OBLIGATIONS AND GENERATED STATE POLICIES THAT HAVE SOUGHT, OFTEN UNSUCCESSFULY, TO COMPENSATE.

Following the G-5 meeting of September 1985, Japanese firms began engaging in active overseas operation. In recent years, the overseas operations of these firms have attracted a great deal of attention, and some remarkable studies have already been conducted. The paper takes an innovative integrated approach to the operations of Japanese firms. After a theoretical analysis of the factors leading to diversification of Japanese firms in the form of overseas operations, the author considers the implications this has on policy making in the North-South context. The economic reform launched in the PRC in the late 1970s had a major effect on a further formation and development of the Chinese working class. However, in spite of the considerable changes that took place in the PRC over the last few years, its social structure has not undergone serious qualitative transformations, with the peasants still constituting the majority of the population. The author traces the development of the Chinese working class with special reference to problems of employment. New forms of employment introduced in 1982. (DÜI-Sen)

The author seeks to provide a political preface to the recovery of a well-known domain of public concern in South Asia, ethnic and especially religious tolerance, from the hegemonic language of secularism popularized by westernized intellectuals and middle classes exposed to the globally dominant language of the nation-state in this part of the world. This language increasingly has become a cover for the complicity of modern intellectuals and the moderizing middle classes of South Asia in the new forms of religious violence. (Internat. Pol. Survey of the achievements of and the problems in the US-ROC economic relationship. The ROC's trade with the USSR and other East European countries. The author believes that the US-ROC trade and investment relationship during the years following US "derecognition" of the ROC and enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act has had not only a beneficial overall effect on the economies of the two countries, but has contributed importantly to the promotion of world trade and the international division of labour. The author weaves together two major sets of influences on Bejing's foreign policy: the drive to acquire foreign support for the Four Modernizations; and the need to take relations with one superpower into account when formulating policy toward the other superpower. He argues against the established wisdom that Beijing's quest for modernization continues to incline it toward a de facto tilt to the USA, and points out that this very quest may instead lead it to adopt a policy of equidistance between the two superpowers.
