The published article represents a review of the monograph by S.M.Khenkin Spain: Modern Unstable Society. The monograph examines Spain's experience at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, as a country that, due to historical circumstances, faces instability and unpredictability of development (so typical in the modern world) in an especially acute and concentrated manner. Khenkin identifies and describes, one by one, factors that characterize and explain the unstable state of the modern Spanish socio-political system, consistently integrating the current issues into the general context of the historical development of the Spanish society, its political and cultural traditions and comparing what is happening there with the situation in other European countries. Based on his research, he comes to the conclusion that several acute and persistent socio-political conflicts make high instability a distinctiveness of the country's life. In the monograph the author provides careful and multilateral analysis of the transition from Francoism to consolidated democracy; various aspects of the ongoing transformations in the society; the specifics of the Spanish party-political system and its evolution; national-regional issue. He documents a radical change in the sentiments in the Spanish society with the appearance of a new generation, which clearly manifested in the reassessment of the transition, with harsh criticism replacing earlier approval, and in the conflict around "historical memory". The author analyzes the relationship between the central government of the country and regional separatists and does not see any prospects for a prompt resolution of the conflict. According to his reasoned assessment, separation from Spain of any of its regions will inevitably cause irreparable damage to all parties to the conflict.

"There is a growing conflict between modern and postmodern social theorists. The latter reject modern approaches as economistic, essentialist and often leading to authoritarian policies. Modernists criticize postmodern approaches for their rejection of holistic conceptual frameworks which facilitate an overall picture of how social wholes (organizations, communities, nation-states, etc.) are constituted, reproduced and transformed. They believe the rejection of holistic methodologies leads to social myopia - a refusal to explore critically the type of broad problems that classical sociology deals with. This book attempts to bridge the divide between these two conflicting perspectives and proposes a novel holistic framework which is neither reductionist/economistic nor essentialist. Modern and Postmodern Social Theorizing will appeal to scholars and students of social theory and of social sciences in general."--Jacket

A surge in the number and scale of development projects, owing especially to the entry of private players in this sector, has triggered massive displacement of people and made resettlement a critical governance task. Yet, both in policy and practice, the mechanisms that are in place at the moment are grossly inadequate, especially in being able to provide a suitable and sustainable alternative livelihood source. The articles in this volume, written by scholars and practitioners of international repute, present new thinking on a range of issues from compensation and benefit sharing to urban eviction and acquisition of land for SEZ, s and argue for the need to rethink resettlement as a human rights issue.
Since its inception, environmental protection has been based on the natural sciences and technology and, more recently, has interacted with the economy, but its relations with social aspects have been the subject of less attention. 'Warning. The environment, however, calls for the preservation of (quality of) life, and man is a social animal. However, if the objective of environmental protection is generally formulated in a consensual way, it will obviously be declined in different ways according to social differentiations. Taking full account of these interactions leads to formulating a series of questions. How are environmental impacts distributed in a society? How can objectives and actions oriented towards the protection of the environment be read in the prism of the social categories? What are the beneficiaries and the losers in particular? Who can make their voices heard and influence the criteria? What avenues to consider for limiting the negative impacts of economic growth with a dual objective of social equity and the reduction of environmental nuisances? These questions question fundamental aspects of sustainable development and political ecology. They are studied in this book, in theory and in many practical cases locally and nationally, but also more widely in the world.

International audience ; The villages where we collected food data are located in the silvopastoral zone of Senegal (Ferlo). This vast territory located in the northern part of the country is characterized by a semi-arid climate. Development and desertification control projects have been implemented there one after the other since the drought of the 1970s and 1980s. The majority of the population is Fulani but cohabitates with Wolofs and Moors, as well as Senegalese government officials and agents of national and international NGOs. This work aims at highlighting the meaning of the cultural dietary restrictions of the fulani people living in the Senegalese Ferlo region.
