This article considers the methodology of entangled history and its potential for nuancing or circumventing scholarly controversies over the nature and extent of the Enlightenment in eighteenth-century religious thought. After sketching the development of entangled history theory and its potential applicability to studying the Enlightenment, the rest of the article provides a case study of one way in which the insights discussed in the first parts of the article can be applied to current controversies about how historians construct the concept of Enlightenment. As will be shown, the transdiscursive entanglement of Jesuit missionary output with the debates between Voltaire and Bergier illustrates the mutability and rhetorical malleability of historical paradigms concerning the Enlightenment and religion.

Good Fortune in a Wrapping Cloth is set in ancient Korea. This is a tale about a girl who painstakingly learns to sew a bojagi, or wrapping cloth, in order to be reunited with her mother who has been assigned as a seamstress for the king. Students first read or listen to the story, identifying cultural elements such as food, shelter, language, religion, arts, or beliefs. Students then identify similarities and differences between Korean culture and their own using a Venn Diagram. Students ultimately demonstrate their understanding of the Korean terms used in the story through an instructional strategy called a Mingle Party. The activities in this lesson will support and build upon students' understanding of cultural differences as well as cultural universals.

AbstractWe study the diffusion of an idea, a product, a disease, a cultural fad, or a technology among agents in a social network that exhibits segregation or homophily (the tendency of agents to associate with others similar to themselves). Individuals are distinguished by their types—e.g., race, gender, age, wealth, religion, profession—which, together with biased interaction patterns, induce heterogeneous rates of adoption or infection. We identify the conditions under which a behavior or disease diffuses and becomes persistent in the population. These conditions relate to the level of homophily in a society and the underlying proclivities of various types for adoption or infection. In particular, we show that homophily can facilitate diffusion from a small initial seed of adopters.

In recent decades, the changing roles of voluntary organizations in the European welfare states have been a focus of interest. In some countries a specific group of organizations put under the policy spotlight is faith-based organizations. This article undertakes a historical-institutionalist analysis of faith-based organizations in France, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The article explores the contemporary social welfare roles of faith-based organizations in these countries through studying the institutionalization of religion and the voluntary sector in the sphere of social welfare since the time of national revolutions. The comparative analysis shows that neither the extent of change in the position of faith-based organizations in social welfare, nor the main mechanisms triggering change, is the same for the different welfare states.

Les écrits de la possession en France au xvii e siècle ont souvent été travaillés par les historiens spécialistes des religions et de l'irréligion. Cet article se propose de voir en quoi l'apport de l'anthropologie, rarement mise à contribution dans le cas de la possession européenne de l'époque moderne, offrirait de nouveaux éclairages sur la possession de Loudun (1632-1637). Ce sont surtout les notions de « performance » et de « drame social », empruntées à Richard Schechner et Victor Turner, qui seront ici mises en usage. Nous verrons de quelle manière elles peuvent ouvrir de nouvelles pistes d'étude et de nouveaux points de vue sur la possédée, considérée alors comme actrice du processus social de la possession.

Women's well-being is dependent on access to reproductive health care. Around the world, however, many women do not have adequate access to this essential health service. Barriers to accessing reproductive health services are especially problematic for Canadian First Nations youth, especially those living in rural and remote communities. This article explores the unique challenges of and approaches to teen reproductive health and sustainable development internationally. The international context of reproductive health and sustainable development can inform and set the context for a discussion of Canadian First Nations teens' reproductive health. Of special interest is how the United Nations and the international community approached sensitive issues and generated consensus among many different countries, cultures, religions, and customs.

The purpose of this paper will be to discuss the fluid nature of collective identity as it relates to heritage on a national and global scale. It will do so by mapping some of the differences and similarities in the criteria used by the Australian Government and the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to define sites that have been classified as being of heritage value. As identity and heritage are dynamic constructs that are directly related to our freedom of speech, religion and education, they are constructs that are fundamental in the modern globalizing world. As heritage and identity are mutually informing concepts, the ebb and flow of power at various levels will ultimately effect our construction of both.

This paper discusses the necessity of integrating peace education in the Lebanese Curriculum. Lebanon has at least 18 different religions and 19 different Political parties. The conflicts within religious and political groups have created tension that has shaped the recent political history. This has profound effects on Lebanon's economic, social, environmental and political performances. The conflicts that have existed amongst its various populations due to many factors cannot be resolved peacefully unless the young generation is educated and trained to resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner. This raises the need to put into practice education programs that introduce peace education into schools either as a separate curriculum or integrated into the curricula of other subjects.

This special edition of Scriptura includes papers, rewritten as articles, of the International Network for Interreligious and Intercultural Education held at Stellenosch University in March 2004. This Network was established in 1994 between the University of Cape Town and the University of Hamburg to promote links between Southern African and Northern European research groups in these fields of study. Since 1994 many international scholars and researchers, especially in the field of religious education were invited to join this Network. Seminars between these groups are hosted every second year at a host University, where participants share their insights on their respective work on religion and education in culturally diverse democratic societies. Insights and discussions are an attempt to promote understanding and respect between future generations.

Professor David Nash defines blasphemy as the 'attacking, wounding and damaging of religious beliefs'. His research into the history of blasphemy has been widely consulted and has highlighted the significant importance of the subject in the contemporary world. This has led to the re-examining of the law and arguments for repeal. He has been pro-actively involved in the debate about blasphemy repeal in England for some time prior to 2008 and also as an active consultant in the Irish Republic, advising NGO's and speaking on their behalf to members of Parliament, international bodies after this date. He also liaised with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and was nominated to sit on the Irish Government's constitutional convention to consider the matter.

Parliamentary debates on the 2001 Turkish civil code amendments have been analysed within the framework of the Islamism-secularism dichotomy. This article re-examines the debates and shows that the discussions on the amendments go beyond this dichotomy. Conservative opposition to the amendments reflected a desire to prevent state and court intervention in the customary practices and to preserve traditional family relationships rather than an Islamist attempt to expand the realm of religion. Women's rights were not simply another instrument for the Islamist-secularist competition as previously argued; the debates were ultimately about whether those rights should be defined according to traditional customs or the norms accepted by international agreements. Основываясь на экспедиционных материалах, полученных на территории современной Абхазии, автор раскрывает механизмы сохранения традиционных верований и их укрепления в новых политических и социокультурных условиях. ; The article is devoted to the study of traditional Abkhazian doctrine. Despite the fact that the Abkhaz formally declared Christians ( 62%) and Muslims (30%), almost all consider themselves supporters of the Abkhaz traditional religion. Based on forwarding submissions on the territory of modern Abkhazia, the author reveals the mechanisms to preserve traditional doctrine and strengthen them in the new political and socio-cultural conditions.
