Few figures in modern German history are as central to the public memory of radical protest than Ulrike Meinhof, but she was only the most prominent of the countless German women-and militant male feminists-who supported and joined in revolutionary actions from the 1960s onward. Sisters in Arms gives a bracing account of how feminist ideas were enacted by West German leftist organizations from the infamous Red Army Faction to less celebrated groups such as the Red Zora. It analyzes their confrontational and violent tactics in challenging the abortion ban, opposing violence against women, and campaigning for solidarity with Third World women workers. Though these groups often diverged ideologically and tactically, they all demonstrated the potency of militant feminism within postwar protest movements

After discussing the importance of collective identity in the emergence of social movements, a case study is offered of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), founded in 1974 to unify the concerns of the women's & labor movements & provide a vehicle for the development of working-class feminism. Data obtained from 524 CLUW members in New England in 1994 via life-history & in-depth interviews are supplemented with interview data from officers & activists at the national level. Four distinct types of women participating in the CLUW are identified -- founding mothers, rebellious daughters, political animals, & fighting victims -- & differences in their recruitment & participation in the movement are linked to differences in their political socialization & identities. It is concluded that the collective identity of a social movement organization differs from the individual identities of its members, though each helps shape & is shaped by the other. 59 References. Pacifists women held the International Congress of The Ha- gue in 1915 that requested the immediate end of the war. The pacifist women of social democracy also met in Bern, Switzerland as opposed to their male peers, who voted for war credits. The war broke feminism that could only compose herself about demand rights after 1918. The paper also analyzes the thought of Virginia Woolf against the war in her book "Three Guineas". She blames the patriarchy by wars, but she says that wars can be sustained with the cooperation of women.

The social changes brought about by modernization generated a variety of the 20th century's political movements, including feminism. In tracing the history of feminism, it is evident that feminism can be viewed through two lenses. On the one hand, feminists have often presented the women's movement as an "unfinished emancipatory project." This viewpoint allows feminism to be represented as a component of modernization; yet, this representation also encourages the threat of nostalgia, reification, & political pessimism. On the other hand, a pluralistic, heterogeneous, & contingent history of feminism can be presented -- one that emphasizes the relationship between power & gender. This leads to a central question: Is feminism an "unfinished emancipatory project," or is it an unorganized scheme, shackled by the narrative that has been imposed on it? It can only be concluded that while some individual feminist theories have been weakened, others have flourished. Therefore, feminism remains well suited to meet the challenges of the 21st century. While the term "feminist" was not used in the United States until the 1910s, the foundations of feminist legal theory were first conceptualized as early as 1848 and developed over the next one hundred and fifty years. This chapter traces that development. It begins with the establishment of the core theoretical precepts of gender and equality grounded in the surprisingly comprehensive philosophy of the nineteenth-century's first women's rights movement ignited at Seneca Falls. It then shows how feminist legal theory was popularized and advanced by the political activism of the women's suffrage movement, even as suffragists limited the feminist consensus to one based on women's maternalism. Progressive feminism then expanded the theoretical framework of feminist theory in the early twentieth century, encapsulating ideas of global peace, market work, and sex rights of birth control. In the modern era, legal feminists gravitated back to pragmatic and concrete ideas of formal equality, and the associated legalisms of equal rights and equal protection. Yet through each of these periods, the two common imperatives were to place women at the center of analysis and to recognize law as a fundamental agent of change"--

This article explores the ways in which an unassuming regional afternoon television programme for women, Houseparty (1972–81) overlapped with the feminist concerns of the 1970s Women's Liberation Movement. Without any overt feminist agenda, this much-loved programme achieved a feminist communication through cross-over between talk television and consciousness-raising, and by addressing issues of prominent concern to women in this decade such as the role of the housewife and the working woman, motherhood and the potential of craft as a political statement. Innovative direction and the intention to offer 'authentic' presentations of female experience, led a mode of conversation that straddled both feminism and femininity.

An attempt to reconcile Marxism & feminism is made by focusing on the strain of argument centering on social identity in Marxist thought. Three works from the Marxist tradition are shown to predate recent arguments in feminist theory. Karl Marx's "Die Judenfrage" ([On the Jewish Question] 1844) examines the nature of liberation offered by a transformation of identity that remains within the larger structure of inequality. Marx's call for a new communist identity to oppose capitalist class-based identities is paired with the feminist call for gynocentric identity. It is argued that Franz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth (1961) parallels radical feminist arguments that self-empowerment for the powerless requires a distancing from an imposed, dominant culture, whether it be colonialist or masculinist. Further parallels with feminist arguments for a separatist response to exploitative relationships are found in Kwame Nkrumah's Neocolonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism (1965). Abstract: This study presents a systematic review of the research into care practices by African authors with a feminist perspective. The research question has been developed through the strategy known as PICo: participants, phenomenon of interest and context. In our case, these are women, feminism and care practices, and sub-Saharan Africa respectively. After the process of filtering 102 selected articles, twenty studies met the inclusion criteria. They were organized into three broad categories using thematic analysis: HIV epidemic; crisis of social reproduction, and Afro-communitarian care. The papers examined explore cultural practices and traditional gender roles as risk or protective factors for contracting HIV; the overload of care work that African women face with regard to the crisis of social reproduction; and the Afro-communitarian proposals in relation to care.

This book addresses hegemonic ruling class masculinity and emphasized femininity within renewables organisational governance, and critiques Anglo-Celtic male privilege, as a barrier to women's leadership participation. Primarily using the Australian socio-political context, the author considers the patriarchal control of organisations and renewables governance, and argues that women-led emphasized femininity-resistance strategies can challenge the hegemonic status of ruling elites to create a leadership that is less power oriented, more collaborative and open to change.
