The appropriation of technologies for information and communication is deeply related to the economy, institutions, and social history. This article will propose a list of mediations to explain the characteristics of the computerisation achieved in Cuba so far, with the help of some examples that illustrate the particularities of the Cuban appropriation of ICT's technology. The analysis will show the relevance of regulatory frameworks, economic forms of social organisation and public policies when explaining the social appropriation of digital technology in Cuba. They express the centrality and weight of the State in Cuban society to determine the limits and forms of computerisation available to different social actors.

The paper is concentrated on the pre-history that led to the so-called Northern enlargement of the European Community. Specifically, the economic and political reasons that led the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark to drop their initial integration arrangements and seek membership in the European Economic Community. After an outlook of the European development after the Second World War, the respective developments in the named countries and their integration projects are analysed. At the end, some highlights about the rivalry caused by the creation of the continental scheme are presented, which ended with the establishing of the dominance of the European Community.

The study employs in-situ primary data supplemented with secondary information from conventional archival sources to examine the toponymic experience of Ethiopia, one of only two African countries without a colonial history. The focus is on Mekelle, the country's third largest city. The city's spatial structure is nondescript. The streets are identified with a string of numbers, which are placed at irregular intervals. Most landmarks are unnamed whereas buildings are unnumbered. This paper shows that the absence of a precise and unambiguous street, place and property identification system in the city stifles its performance in the urban management, economic, and social milieus.

AbstractAt the 1933–1934 World's Fair in Chicago the local German American population was able to organize some resistance to minimize the Nazi presence on the fairgrounds, while Italian Americans, for their part, were held in check by the close oversight of Fascist Italy's representatives at the Fair. Neither the Fairs organizing committee nor the U.S. State Department offered any objection to either governments presence. The history of the event shows that these differences were fundamentally due to international regulations surrounding international expositions, suggesting that our existing approaches toward meaning‐making and political action at mega‐events need to take better account of larger regulatory structures.

This article analyses the evolution of the mother–daughter relationship in China, and describes the mothering characteristics of four generations of women, which in sequence includes "foot-binding mothers", "mothers after liberation", "mothers after reform and opening up", and "mothers who were only daughters". Referring to Klein's ideas about the mother–child relationship, especially those in her paper "Some reflections on 'The Oresteia' ", the author tries to understand mothers and their impact on their daughters in these various periods of Chinese history, so as to explore the mutual influence of the mother–daughter relationship in particular, and the Chinese cultural and developmental context in general.

Este artigo visa apresentar e analisar a concepção de progresso histórico elaborada pelo filósofo alemão Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) em sua obra Lições sobre a Filosofia da História, publicada postumamente em 1837. Para isso, a exposição do artigo seguirá, principalmente, o terceiro capítulo da obra mencionada – denominado "O Curso da História Universal" –, acompanhando, detalhadamente, a argumentação do filósofo. A conclusão do artigo destaca o progresso histórico hegeliano compreendido enquanto um fim infinito, baseando-se, principalmente, na obra Does History Make Sense? (2017), de Terry Pinkard. Além disso, compara-se a compreensão hegeliana do progresso histórico com as compreensões linear e cíclica da história.

The article asks why, in Western universities, the success of the academic field of comparative philosophy has so far failed to significantly diversify the curricula of academic philosophy. It suggests that comparative philosophy has mainly relied on the same approaches that have made academic philosophy Eurocentric, namely, on the history of philosophy as the main mode of teaching and researching philosophy. Further, post-comparative philosophy and transcultural studies are presented as providing tools to address the foundations of the institutional parochialism of academic philosophy, while preserving one of the most fundamental tenets of philosophy—the quest for universal knowledge that transcends cultural particularities.

The narrative of Dubravka Ugrešić's novel The Museum of Unconditional Surrender (1997) revolves around three core motifs: the problem of memory and remembering, the experience of temporality, and the notion of exile, developed in relation to the dichotomy of fact versus fiction. While most theoretical approaches to the novel focus on the motif of exile in the context of dominant ideological patterns of the new national states formed after the breakup of Yugoslavia, this paper represents a shift in interpretative focus to the problem of memory and the experience of temporality in the perspective of the dynamics of history and fiction.

Abstract
Based on research done in the National Archives of Cambodia on the Sino-Cambodian newspaper Mekong Yat Pao and its literary supplements, this report has two main objectives: firstly, since the field of Sinophone literature in the Cambodian Kingdom has seldom been researched, to write a general introduction to the history of the newspaper and its historical context; and then to describe in detail the contents of the literary supplements, trying to understand their development according to a periodization through which one can follow the evolution of the dominant literary genres and the parallel political events of the 1950–60s in Cambodia and mainland China.

This methodological paper considers how movement may be captured and expressed in qualitative data. Beginning with a history of movement as it has been represented in empirical studies, this paper posits that movement has been undertheorized in qualitative research (via video and photograph); theorizes movement under the Deleuzo–Bergsonian concept of duration; and wonders how movement as a kind of 'dynamic unity' might be expressed as visual data. Using photographs collected from a troupe of fire-manipulating circus performers, this study suggests the use of long-exposure camera technology as one practical means of thinking about movement (as duration) in qualitative research.

Historically, hunger was used as a tool of coercion and manipulation, and as a weapon to eradicate Indigenous populations. Through policy decisions, the support for and removal of Indigenous children, and other assimilative practices, social work has contributed to the perpetuation of 'helping practices' which damaged Indigenous cultures and well-being. Today, experiences of hunger are still tied to colonialism. There is a need to examine the complex history of feeding Indigenous peoples in Canada and to work to reclaim and heal Indigenous food systems. For social work, this requires an emphasis on Indigenous ways of helping led by Indigenous peoples.

We study the long-run effects of forced migration on investment in education. After World War II, millions of Poles were forcibly uprooted from the Kresy territories of eastern Poland and resettled (primarily) in the newly acquired Western Territories, from which the Germans were expelled. We combine historical censuses with newly collected survey data to show that, while there were no pre-WWII differences in educational attainment, Poles with a family history of forced migration are significantly more educated today than other Poles. These results are driven by a shift in preferences away from material possessions toward investment in human capital. (JEL I25, I26, J24, N34, R23)

AbstractPhilosemitism – the idealization of Jews and Israel – and Chinese-Jewish history function as a platform of soft power for growing China–Israel relations and as a means to bolster Chinese nationalism. Given the Chinese Communist Party's current positioning of China as a globally dominant power as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, this article re-examines the contemporary incarnation of philosemitism in China as part of a civilizationist narrative designed to position China as globally central and superior. This not only places heavy emphasis upon Jewish racial stereotypes and erases genuine historical Jewish voices but it also ignores evidence of anti-Semitic beliefs in China.

The increasing non‐performing assets (NPAs) and to meet the higher funding needs, India witnessed the biggest consolidation in public sector banks. In India the surging NPAs is long witnessed concern and major economic reforms were initiated in Indian banking to curb the issue. The recent merger has brought in a major policy concern with this consolidation which is availability of loans to smaller businesses. The paper analyses the impact of banks consolidation on Indian economy by considering both positive as well as negative aspects of banks mergers. The paper also presents the history of Indian banking and recommending a way forward.

The article deals with analyzing practical experience of Department for Youth Innovative Programs Development and Career Guidance of the Diplomatic Academy of Russian Foreign Ministry in terms of breeding patriotic feelings among the youth as an axiological task in training future specialists in international relations. The author elaborates on key patterns of breeding patriotism. Special attention was paid to preserving historical memory and popularizing of Russian diplomatic service heritage and to interaction between different governmental institutions in the patriotic sphere. The author underlines the importance of developing new patriotic projects in the framework of modern digital environment in order to prevent falsification of history.
