International audience ; The main purpose of this paper is to propose the hypothesis that inequality was essential for the sustainability and 'development' of early agriculturally based societies that developed in Prehistory and Ancient History. This was so for varied reasons: there was a need for some members of societies – the dominant class also called the elite – to escape from the Malthusian trap. In most cases, agriculture produced a bigger economic surplus eventually. Managerial problems – such as the ones associated with storage, the division of labor, irrigation, trade – being part of the consequences of the Neolithic revolution, created pressures to develop more centralized political organizations, a process which led later to the formation of the early states. This process allowed the appearance of powerful local chiefs who changed the nature of their original communities with new forms of social organization, in which one individual and his enlarged family – transformed into a ruling elite – received the benefits of the labor of a large number of serfs belonging to less-favored communities in neighboring areas. Although the surplus appropriated by the elite was used in specific ways – consumption, investments and expenditures on armed forces – it increased the power and wealth of these societies, albeit a solution involving unequally distributed wealth. While this is not the only factor in the growing dominance of agriculturally based societies, it is one of main ones as is evidenced by considering six early civilizations resulting from the Neolithic revolution. This result involves an important modification of Malthus' theory. However, inequality – though necessary – was not a sufficient condition for the sustainability and economic development of these early societies.

It defines economic inertia as the conjunction of technical inertia --- a social planner chooses investment on persistent abating activities, as opposed to choosing abatement at each time period independently --- and increasing marginal investment costs in abating activities. It shows that in the presence of economic inertia, optimal abatement efforts (in dollars per ton) are bell-shaped and trigger a transition toward a low-carbon economy. The authors prove that optimal marginal abatement costs should differ across sectors: they depend on the global carbon price, but also on sector-specific shadow costs of the sectoral abatement potential. The paper discusses the impact of the convexity of abatement investment costs: more rigid sectors are represented with more convex cost functions and should invest more in early abatement. Drawing up marriage contracts in order to achieve the autonomy of the parties with regard to property relations in marriage in the period after the entry into force of the Austrian General Civil Code has become a common practice. A very detailed normative framework for the regulation of individual institutes of marital law left enough space to regulate property relations between spouses in accordance with their requirements and with the purpose of preserving the economic interests of the family and each partner. In the period in which a man took over the function of managing marital property, and the position of a married woman was marked by patterns of desirable behaviour, a number of property dispositions were recorded with the purpose of strengthening a woman's position in society during marriage, but also securing her status in the case of termination of marriage. Guided by the idea of modernizing the social position of women in the period after the entry into force of the Austrian Civil Code, the basic purpose of this research is to determine the position of women in terms of property rights acquired on the basis of private legal documents. This refers to the institutes included in the content of marriage contracts preserved in the State Archives in Osijek and the effects of wills, which often contained marriage provisions, but also those wills whose creators often sought to provide property protection for poor women by establishing foundations. Available documents come from different legal areas of urban (Osijek) and rural (Baranja) areas, which makes them a valuable material for a comparative analysis of various issues, from applicable law to the effects of its application. Therefore, this research uses a legal-historical method and a comparison of the obtained results to try to determine the effects of marriage law and the impact of contractual dispositions on the economic and legal strengthening of the position of women in the society in the second half of the 19th century.

This thesis tackles one of the most debatable and in vogue topics in economics, namely the economic development and environmental quality nexus. Notably, it studies the economic development's effects—in terms of its economic, social, and political dimensions—on the environmental quality for developing and transition economies. Chapter I, which is divided into three key phases, namely theoretical review, empirical exercise, and empirical review, contributes to the literature by giving various insights regarding the link between economic growth and environmental pollution in developing and transition economies. Overall, it reveals that the recent empirical studies, indeed, succeeding to curtail some of the deficiencies suggested by theoretical contributions, might indicate a certain consensus regarding pollution-growth nexus and Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis validity. Chapter II examines the pollution-growth nexus in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, adding to the related empirical literature using the extended EKC hypothesis as a theoretical background. On the one hand, it unveils an increasing nonlinear link between GDP and CO2 at the aggregate level, which is powerfully robust to different estimators and control variables. On the other hand, the country-level analysis reveals that the relationship between GDP and CO2 is characterized by much diversity among CEE countries. Thus, despite an aggregated upward trend, some CEE countries managed to secure both higher GDP and lower CO2 emissions. From a policy perspective, EU policymakers could pay more attention to these countries and amend the current unique environmental policy to account for country-heterogeneities to support economic growth without damaging the environment. BackgroundBacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common cause of vaginitis among women worldwide and is associated with increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. We aimed to determine the impact of the HIV risk environment on BV among female sex workers who inject drugs (FSW-PWIDs) in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional analysis utilizing baseline data from a randomized controlled trial evaluating a behavioral HIV prevention intervention. Participants underwent testing for BV using the OSOM BVBlue® Rapid Test (Genzyme Diagnostics, San Diego, CA) and completed a survey eliciting information on the HIV risk environment, sexual risk behaviors, and substance use. We applied logistic regression to identify correlates of BV in the physical, social, economic, and political HIV risk environments stratified by study site (Ciudad Juarez vs. Tijuana).ResultsIn total, 584 HIV-negative FSW-PWIDs (300 Ciudad Juarez; 284 Tijuana) were enrolled. The prevalence of BV was 39% (n = 228), which was higher in Ciudad Juarez (56.7%) compared to Tijuana (20.4%). In both cities, micro-level components of the physical HIV risk environment were associated with BV. In Ciudad Juarez, BV was associated with past experiences or threats of physical violence in response to proposed condom use (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.66, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.74-7.69, p = 0.001) and lifetime residence in Ciudad Juarez (aOR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.05-2.87, p = 0.031). In Tijuana, BV was associated with the number of hours spent on the street daily in the past six months looking for, using, or dealing drugs, engaging in other income generating activities, or sleeping (aOR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.001-1.097, p = 0.045).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that FSW-PWIDs' risk of BV may be shaped by the microphysical HIV risk environment. Supplements to No 67 The founding principles of open source — the ability to share, distribute, modify and reproduce information — be transferable to agriculture? If open source software is now a reality in the IT field, is this transferable to agriculture? This article looks at the hypothesis and how to create and disseminate agricultural tools through "free" processes. Two study cases will be presented: management software for farmers developed by the eponymous company, Ekylibre; and a cooperative that develops techniques for self-construction of agricultural tools among farmers, Atelier Paysan. Both structures will be studied through their history and form of organisation, how they put the open source principles into practice, and by describing the tools they produce in their economic and social context. Ekylibre and Atelier Paysan both refer to the open source movement and engage in knowledge sharing — which are disseminated through websites, demonstrations, trainings and forums. These are structures closely linked to user communities. However, looking more closely at it, it can be seen that the architecture, materiality and financial aspect of the tools developed by Ekylibre and the Atelier Paysan show differences. In academic literature, the open source is generally conceived as a political and ethical project, depending on a particular form of sociability and community. The article shows that there is a need to improve the problem and detail by empirically establishing how the open source materialises on a case-by-case basis. While some tools may be conceived as political objects, the term 'politics' does not refer to the same thing. Although Ekylibre and Atelier Paysan are both linked to user communities, the latter are organised differently and monetary exchanges take place separately. The form of capital, its existence as monetary wealth, is hardly in doubt. The problem is with the content, the 'stuff' which makes capital grow, and on this issue there is no agreement whatsoever. For example, does capital accumulate because it is 'productive,' or due to the 'exploitation' of workers? Does capital expand 'on its own,' or does it need non-capitalist institutions such as the state? Can capital grow by undermining production and efficiency? What exactly is being accumulated? Does the value of capital represent a tangible 'thing,' 'abstract labour' or perhaps something totally different? What units should we use to measure its accumulation? Despite centuries of debate, none of these questions has a clear answer. Yet they have to have answers. The accumulation of capital is the central process of capitalism, and unless we can clarify what that means, our theories remain 'bagel theories,' with a big hole in the middle. The seminar examines such questions theoretically and historically. The first part explores basic conceptions of capital. It begins by studying three approaches to capital: one based on utility, a second based on labour value and a third based on power. The discussion then broadens to examine these three approaches in relation to technology, the corporation and the state. The second part of the seminar deals with transformations of capital. This part introduces the twin concepts of dominant capital and differential accumulation.
