The supply side of many professional service markets consists of two different pools of providers: generalists and specialists. Specialists usually gain access to new clients through referrals from generalists. To ensure a continuing stream of engagements, specialists often form referral alliances with multiple generalists. Engaging the right generalist partners and allocating resources to the resulting referral relationships are among the most important challenges facing these specialist firms. In this study, we examine how competition affects the management of referral alliances over time. Because of the high level of inseparability of the professional service engagement, the nature of competition among specialists is complex. Building on the ecological view of competition, we model the degree of niche overlap in the specialist's home markets and the generalists' markets as well as the potential overlap due to the proximity of rivals vis-à-vis generalists. Using data on visiting consultant clinics involving cardiology specialty practices and rural hospitals from a Midwestern state over a 13-year period, we find that the various aspects of niche overlap influence the involvement of these specialist professional service firms in referral alliances as well as resources they allocate to these relationships. In addition to expanding our understanding of vertical, bilateral alliances between professional service firms, this study enhances our general understanding of strategic alliances by demonstrating how partner attractiveness and the actions of rivals affect the resource allocation decisions of firms managing multiple strategic alliances over time.

The present article examines the quality of life, its characteristics, and conditions of manifestation. Quality of life indicates the degree of well-being and satisfaction in individual and social terms. It relates to a set of factors representing well-being, physical condition, and health; material success and income; the social environment and contacts; emotional satisfaction; personal development. The article studies the professional community as one of the important prerequisites for quality of life because the profession and its related income, career, environment, and development opportunities a conditions for unfolding the objective and subjective dimensions of the quality of life in a personal and community plan. The professional community is also related to creating contacts and social capital, contributing to well-being. The analysis traces various types of inequalities that can reveal themselves in professional and social relationships and impact the quality of life. The article shows the activity environment as significant for the life characteristics of individuals and for their subjective evaluations and states, as well as for the perception of the quality of life as a complex variable measuring the status of individuals.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to evaluate relationships between workaholism and satisfaction outcomes with job, career and life overall among managerial and professional women and explore the moderating role of social support in these associations.Design/methodology/approach– Self-report measures collected online from 350 alumnae from top-ranked business schools currently in the US labor force were analyzed through hierarchical multiple regression analyses.Findings– Workaholism components explained significant amounts of variance in job, career and life satisfaction. Specifically, lower levels of work enjoyment were consistently associated with detrimental outcomes and high drive impacted both job and life satisfaction negatively. Social support moderated the relationship between job satisfaction and workaholism through work enjoyment, with women with greater social support demonstrating higher job satisfaction at equivalent work enjoyment levels versus those with low social support.Research limitations/implications– This paper shares methodological weaknesses involving the nature of the sample and self-report methods of measurement common to workaholism research.Practical implications– In the context of today's competitive workplaces, results provide a cautionary message of the harmful effects of workaholic dispositions for a certain segment of professional women. It emphasizes the importance of work enjoyment and positive intrinsic motivation, while suggesting that job designs that reflect the work involvement predispositions of each woman can be beneficial.Originality/value– This paper extends the understanding of workaholism correlates to female MBA graduates from top management schools in the USA and investigates, for the first time, the role of social support in those relationships.

Providers serving older adults face a growing problem. Older adults are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with service quality citing deficits in provider communication and relationship skills. The author argues this dissatisfaction is largely related to three widespread issues: ageism, use of professional jargon, and age-related changes in the older adult. Mandatory reporting legislation has been adopted in every state to insure the protection of children from maltreatment. These statutes have become a significant factor in the lives of mental health professionals who work with children and families. Thirty psychotherapists who had made a recent report of child maltreatment on a client in treatment were interviewed about their experiences with reporting and the consequences of reporting for therapeutic relationships. Several potentially problematic consequences and dilemmas were identified by the therapists, including immediate and long‐term effects on the therapeutic alliance and course of therapy, and conflicts of interest in working with children and families.

The formation of future philologists' professional competence in the aspect of axiological approach is studied in the paper. Taking into account axiological ideas, a set of cultural-and-humanistic educational functions are identified. Among them there are: development of spiritual strength, abilities and skills that enable a person to overcome life's obstacles; formation of character and moral responsibility; providing opportunities for personal and professional self-realization; mastering the means that are necessary to achieve intellectual and moral freedom; creating conditions for creative and spiritual growth of an individual. As far as humanistic aim of education is concerned, a number of problems is outlined. Among them there are: awareness of the intrinsic value of an individual as a carrier of high humanistic principles, its unique individuality and creative nature; recognition of the harmonious development of a personality as goal and the main purpose of a man; understanding of creative nature of activity, awareness of the need of spiritual costs and self-improvement for its implementation; development of humanitarian culture as a set of personality traits - the unity of the internal moral essence and external behavioral expression, subtle perception of beauty and ugliness in human relationships, empathy, sensitivity, expressiveness, optimism, kindness. Several approaches to the classification of educational values were suggested. This study examined emotion regulation skills in 22 sexually maltreated girls and 22 nonmaltreated girls between 6 and 12 years of age to determine how the experience of sexual maltreatment might interfere with normative emotional development. Findings indicated that sexually maltreated girls, compared to nonmaltreated peers, reported different goals (i.e., inhibiting emotion to avoid conflict vs. displaying emotion to rectify a situation) for managing their emotional expressivity with their parents. They also reported expecting less support and more conflict from parents in response to emotional displays. Finally, maltreated girls expected less practical assistance from all social partners (i.e., mother, father, best friend) following their emotional displays. Surprisingly, however, there were no group differences in girls' ability to generate effective strategies for coping with emotionally arousing situations. Findings are discussed from the functionalist approach to emotional development, emphasizing the importance of social context (i.e., maltreating, nonmaltreating) in the development of children's emotion regulation skills.

Summary Current policy discourses demonstrate a weak connection to broader theoretical debates about family obligation and in particular how family responsibilities become negotiated over time and across the life course. How policy imagines family care can, therefore, be different to the actual experiences of families. This qualitative paper, using semi-structured interviews, explores the experience of a particularly neglected group, adult siblings, who have a brother or sister with autism (plus learning disability). We spoke to 21 adult siblings, met with 12 of their siblings with autism and talked to 12 health and social care professionals. Findings Our analysis suggests that connectedness and commitment, which remained subject to continuous redefinition by all family members, informed sibling relationships Practitioners, however, struggle to engage with this complexity, thereby undermining the extent siblings' relationships can be realised. Application The paper concludes that policy initiatives are at risk of becoming an uneasy compromise, in which the need to offer choice occurs alongside the 'problem' of managing family care. Sibling relationships are more than simply 'being of' or 'belonging to' a family. They are dynamic, subject to contingency and negotiation. Interventions should be formulated to work with these assumptions, without presupposing a definite experience fixed in time and space. This would not only maximise the disabled siblings' quality of life, but also ensure a more productive and fulfilling context for family relationships.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationships between family configurations and creative occupations. For this purpose, a biographical perspective was taken through the reconstruction of the life histories of sixteen creative professionals in Spain. We have followed two lines of approach, namely Florida's classification of occupations (2002), which distinguishes between a creative class and a super-creative core, and Lahire's conception of family configuration (1995). The main results reveal the importance of practices that are carried out on a daily basis by the family network (both internally and externally): reading and writing, cultural consumption (theatre, music, exhibitions, etc.), types of leisure (travelling) and forms of authority that lead the way to self-control and domestic family order. We have shown with this study the importance of the transmission of family culture in the construction of people who have creative occupations and the relationship that exists between the family educational capital and the educational level attained by the offspring.

There are increasing calls from global health organisations for the promotion of traditional medicines (TM) as one method of addressing the health needs of populations in poorer countries. However, little research has been done to explore the interactions (and potential conflicts between) traditional healthcare systems and biomedical services. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 46 cancer patients in Lahore, Pakistan, this article examines patients' experiences of the inter-professional dynamics associated with the range of traditional and biomedical cancer treatments. Results illustrate a complex set of 'cross sectoral' relationships. On the one hand, significant professional distancing was identified between certain traditional healers and biomedical clinicians, as was the deployment of discursive and regulatory gate-keeping tactics at a grassroots level. It is concluded that, for the development of culturally-appropriate health policy, there is the need for a multifaceted understanding of the socio-cultural processes underpinning the relationships between different treatment modalities.
