It is indicated that "Her majesty's judges are by nature conservative" but also human & opinionated. Here the admin'ive powers & discretion exercised by British judges & control over them are examined. These powers operate within "fashions & trends of judicial decision" in the field of law, & some of these fashions & trends are delineated under reference to various statutes & laws, as well as individual court cases. Diff's in the interpretation of law arising out of judges' pol'al att's are noted. It is up to the courts to decide how rigorous or flexible is to be their interpretation of what the statute provides & the factors influencing this interpretation are complex. Each individual regards the state sometimes as a force for greater soc justice & sometimes as a force for oppression. In the center of this ambivalence, also looking both ways, stand Her Majesty's judges, often appearing to embody in their decisions the sorts of contradictions which each individual lives in, in terms of his pol'al & personal situations. Discusses the role of religion in US politics, especially in party makeup & ideology, preceding & during the 20th century & explores the likely effects of religious faith into the 21st century. Religious bloc voting inspired by policy issues regarding the Depression, the world wars, civil rights, feminism, & issues of religious practice & morality was common throughout the century. Religious political behavior in the 1990s switched from divisions among denominations to traditional & modernist divides within denominations. Nearly 75% of those holding more orthodox beliefs have voted for the Republican ticket, while modernists & secular interests have supported the Democrats. State-funded vouchers for education, abortion, welfare issues, & the restoration of religious liberties continue to divide religious groups along traditionalist or modernist lines. However, the general need for social morality in tackling family breakdown, failing education, poverty, international terrorism, & exploitation of women & children is recognized by a majority of the US public. A reflection on the ever-broadening debates between the proponents of universalism & particularism focuses on the emerging ambivalence in the central categories & the political implications of these discourses in interaction. Under the banner of democratic multicultural pluralism, the intervention of alternative postmodernist approaches into conventional Western imperialist foundationalism, traceable to the primacy of universalist values for the Enlightenment, is reflexively aware of the ultimately nihilist futility implied in a politics of pure difference. After sketching critiques of structural essentialism & foundationalism, & contributions to the debate by thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, Plato, & G. W. F. Hegel, it is argued that the continual adjustment toward openness by the particular represents its only possible avenue to complete realization confronted with the universal. 23 References. J. In Typing Politics, Richard Davis provides a comprehensive yet concise assessment of the growing role played by political blogs and their relationship with the mainstream media. Through a detailed content analysis of the most popular political blogs--Daily Kos, Instapundit, Michelle Malkin, and Wonkette--he shows the degree to which blogs influence the traditional news media. Specifically, he compares the content of these blogs to four leading newspapers noted for their political coverage: The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Times. He explains how political journalists at these papers use blogs to inform their reportage and analyzes general attitudes about the role of blogs in journalism.
