Sandhya Shukla has written a highly interdisciplinary comparison of Indian diasporic cultures in Britain and the United States. Specializing in Anthropology and Asian American Studies, she is particularly strong on historical and literary text analysis. She says, "The relational aspects of a range of texts and experiences, which include historical narratives, cultural organizations, autobiography and fiction, musical performance and films, are of paramount importance in this critical ethnography" (20). Contending that the Indian diaspora confronts "a simultaneous nationalism and internationalism," she is celebratory about India and "formations of Indianness," and uses phrases like "amazing force" and "wildly multicultural" (17). Her exploration shows "the tremendous impulse to multiple nationality that Indianness abroad has made visible" (14) and, "the amazing persistence of Indian cultures in so many places" (22).

This article advances the argument that an African nationalist ideology crafted in Diaspora by African ideologues in the 19th and early 20th centuries contained tenets that addressed the fundamental development challenges faced in present day Africa. The ideology centered on African interests ranging from resistance against the institution of slavery to the formation of what was referred to as an "African nationality" with an independent African continent governed by Africans against the background of African history and Africa's contribution toward human civilization. However, after African decolonization in the 20th century, ideologues in the African leadership structure did not seem to have learned lessons from the vision and processes in the formulation of an ideology by their precursors in Diaspora, hence nullifying what probably would have resulted in an African renaissance grounding African national development in an Africanbased ideology.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Legislative competence for the UK resides in the Westminster Parliament, but there are three legal systems (England and Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland) with separate courts and legal professions. These legal systems have a unified final court of appeal in the House of Lords. The Isle of Man, and the two Channel Islands (Guernsey and Jersey) are not part of the UK, but possessions of the crown. Although their citizens are subject to the British Nationality Act 1981, the islands have their own legal systems. They are represented by the UK government for the purposes of international relations, but are not formal members of the European Union.

On March 22, 2002, amidst political pressures exerted by the Bush administration, the government of Cambodia was forced into signing a repatriation agreement with the United States that immediately made some 1,600 Cambodian Americans, most of whom were fully acculturated teenagers with virtually no ties to Cambodia, deportable under the Immigration and Nationality Act's aggravated felony provision. This Note addresses the aggravated felony provision as applied to Cambodian refugees and two legal theories that have been developed in order to prevent their deportation. Based on current trends by federal courts to incorporate international legal norms into American jurisprudence, particularly Beharry v. Reno and Maria v. McElroy, this Note contends that a more serious look at these two legal theories, which rely heavily on international human rights standards, is needed.

Soviet nationality policy after 1945 defined the Rusyn minority living throughout trans-Carpathian Ukraine as Ukrainian nationals. However, this definition has begun to transform since Ukrainian independence in 1991-1992. This article aims to identify some of the challenges that emerge when attempting to gauge the degree of public support for the definition of the Rusyn identity, particularly since official documentation has thus far not recognized what is essentially a fourth eastern Slavic group that has been erroneously classified as other groups. Re-establishing the true socio-political contour of this minority people will thus require administrative measures to incorporate the group into a census. This study evaluates whether the education, environmental expertise, & nationality of firms' chief executive officers (CEOs) are associated with greater participation & environmental performance in a voluntary environmental program implemented in a developing nation. Specifically, we collected data from the Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program, a voluntary initiative aimed at promoting beyond-compliance environmental performance by hotels operating in Costa Rica. Our findings suggest that CEOs' level of formal education & environmental expertise appear to be significantly associated with higher corporate participation in voluntary programs & also with higher beyond-compliance environmental performance ratings. Contrary to conventional expectations, CEOs from industrialized countries (as opposed to developing countries) do not appear to show a statistically significant association with participation in the CST program & with higher beyond-compliance environmental performance. This paper investigates whether the Danish Dispersal Policy on new refugee immigrants carried out from 1986 to 1998 can be regarded as a natural experiment. Were refugees randomly assigned to a location? The main findings are as follows. First, around 90% of new refugees were assigned to a location. Second, the dispersal policy successfully distributed new refugees equally across locations relative to the number of inhabitants in a location. Third, the actual settlement may have been influenced by six refugee characteristics. I conclude that the initial location of new refugees 1986-1998 may be regarded as random, when controlling for family status, need of treatment, educational needs, location of close family and friends and nationality at the time of immigration as well as year of immigration.

The paper examines immigration and assimilation processes of Somalis in Minnesota. Does America have an assimilation problem? There are two competing answers to the preceding question: Barone (2001) says "no" because immigrants have always blended. By contrast, Fonte's (2001) answer is "yes" because today's assimilating forces are much different than those that prevailed in the early twentieth century. Drawing on African American experiences, Somalis face several challenges: cultural differences, English Language, racism, social and economic inequalities. Additionally, African immigrants, generally, have difficulty grasping the concept of race in America because everyone is identified by the skin-color rather than by their nationality. Therefore, racial and cultural backgrounds can complicate the process of assimilation for Somalis. Arguably, there is a relationship between immigration and assimilation.
