In a long list of publications since 1923 Harold Innis with industry and insight set a pattern for the study and interpretation of Canadian economic history. The University of Toronto, the Dominion Government, and Canadian learned societies in their various fashions paid tribute to the high quality of this achievement. His career, moreover, was a refutation of his own generalization, perhaps playfully formulated, that no Canadian scholar could secure recognition in the United States. This book provides a comprehensive history of the emergence and the formation of the concept of sovereignty in China from the year 1840 to the present. It contributes to broadening the history of modern China by looking at the way the notion of sovereignty was gradually articulated by key Chinese intellectuals, diplomats and political figures in the unfolding of the history of international law in China, rehabilitates Chinese agency, and shows how China challenged Western Eurocentric assumptions about the progress of international law. It puts the history of international law in a global perspective, interrogating the widely-held belief of international law as universal order and exploring the ways in which its history is closely anchored to a European experience that fails to take into account how the encounter with other non-European realities has influenced its formation.

"When Edwin Sutherland introduced the concept of white-collar crime, he referred to the respectable businessmen of his day who had, in the course of their occupations, violated the law whenever it was advantageous to do so. Yet since the founding of the American Republic, numerous otherwise respectable individuals had been involved in white-collar criminality. Using organized smuggling as an exemplar, this narrative history of American smuggling establishes that white-collar crime has always been an integral part of American history when conditions were favorable to violating the law. This dark side of the American Dream originally exposed itself in colonial times with elite merchants of communities such as Boston trafficking contraband into the colonies. It again came to the forefront during the Embargo of 1809 and continued through the War of 1812, the Civil War, nineteenth century filibustering, the Mexican Revolution and Prohibition. The author also shows that the years of illegal opium trade with China by American merchants served as precursor to the later smuggling of opium into the United States. The author confirms that each period of smuggling was a link in the continuing chain of white-collar crime in the 150 years prior to Sutherland's assertion of corporate criminality"--

I apply Gadamer's view of historicity to undergo a theological understanding of the historical significance of ancient migration in Psalms, which narrates Israelites' history, including creation, the patriarchs, Egyptian bondage, Sinai, the wilderness, conquest, life in the land, and the exile and return. Gadamer's concept of history composed of universal history, the concept of power, and the concept of Spirit are applied to explain the historical significance of Psalms. In terms of Christianity, which appears to be the centerpiece of the historical view of the Western tradition, human history moves towards unity and freedom under the supreme sovereignty of the Spirit, Who makes history. For the teaching of history in schools to be effective, it must be useful for something – either in an intellectual sense (for a better understanding of the world) or in a practical sense (for various professions related to the humanities). The only purpose of teaching an "encyclopedia of facts" is that it is good to have a minimum of knowledge in every field. Teaching history to mark group identity is acceptable, as is any education in the field of national culture, provided it is not exclusive with regard to the heritage and achievements of others. As a history teacher, the author does not accept the teaching of history for the purpose of inculcating a sense of national pride. He would like the study of history to increase the intellectual abilities of students, and in effect, their wisdom.

This article is a historiographical and methodological intervention in the discussion of modernity, coloniality, and global history. It does two things. First, it highlights an important but neglected topic in the existing literature on modernity and globalization, viz. the significant role of science in traditional narratives of modernity. These traditional narratives have been challenged by new approaches in both history of science and history of modernity. The article goes further and provides a critique of these new approaches. It argues that they should take more into account the concepts of scale and region. Second, the article suggests a methodologically oriented and operational definition of region in the context of history of science and modernity. To illustrate this point, it discusses the potential and risks of adopting 'Asia as method' as an approach to global history of science and modernity.

Robert Laurent's contribution to the history of wine growers in Côte-d'Or.
Robert Laurent has written important books about the contemporary rural history of Burgundy. In his first work on the agriculture of Côte-d'Or in the nineteenth century (1931), he emphasized new economic and social approaches, which had just been developped by the Annales school in Strasbourg, where he studied. His thesis included as his major field the study of the wine growers of Côte-d'Or in the nineteenth century, while his minor bore on the Octroi de Dijon. He used methods from economic history, studying landownership, production, and prices, and also from social history, with analyses of structural factors, farming practices, and political behavior. This approach is applicable to other countries and other societies, while constituting an innovative view of French rural history.

material conditions, social relations, and working-class political

women's experience in some measure. They generally move beyond the
dichotomy of celebrating women's heroism and denouncing sexism, instead
showing how solidarity between laboring women and men could be intimately

history in sophisticated ways, demonstrating that how a story is told can be
just as important in shaping our understanding of history as the empirical
detail it may seem to offer us.
