International audience ; This article deals with the role played by Dieudonné M'Bala M'Bala aka. Dieudonné in the challenging of Jews' extermination during WW2. As a very famous humorist in France, Dieudonné promoted a mix of anti-Semitic stances, Holocaust denial, and conspiracy theories which is even more surprising given that in the early stages of his career Dieudonné was initially viewed as an anti-racist activist with a strong personal commitment fighting the radical-right party Front National. Dieudonné is now at the center of a curious constellation of people who were once foes but are now finding common ground through his hate speeches. Goal of this article is to try to understand how such a constellation developed, and analyzing what role Holocaust denial plays in this set of popular ideas and representations. In order to do so, Dieudonné's career is briefly summarized, his social resonance is sketched, and finally so the nature and role of the kind of Holocaust denial he spreads.
In this paper, we analyze Ricardo Piglia's diaries published to date, Años de formación (2015) and Los años felices (2016), with the intention of highlighting the obsession that underlies and articulates his poetics: the search for the ways to narrate the experience. By reading these diaries, the reader will be able to discover the initial form of the Piglian writing and how the historical and political coordinates of the writer are related to the forms of writing, that is, to the ways of narrating.
Social media have been playing a growingly important role in grassroots protest over the last five years. While many scholars have explored dynamics of political cyberprotest (e.g., the ongoing transnational Occupy movement, the 2012 Quebec student strike, the student-led protest movement in Chile between 2011 and 2013), few have studied sub-dynamics relating to ethno-cultural minorities' uses of social media to gain visibility, mobilize support, and engage in political and civil action. We fill part of this gap in the academic literature by investigating uses of Twitter for political engagement in the context of the Canada-based Idle No More movement (INM). This ongoing protest initiative, which emerged in December 2012, seeks to mobilize Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally as well as their non-Indigenous allies. It does so by bringing attention to their culture, struggles, and identities as well as advocating for changes in policy areas relating to the environment, governance, and socio-economic matters. Our study explores to what extent references to aspects of Indigenous identities and culture shaped INM-related tweeting and, by extension, activism during the summer of 2013. We conducted a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of 1650 #IdleNoMore tweets shared by supporters of this movement between 3 July 2013 and 2 August 2013. Our study demonstrates that unlike other social media-intensive movements where economic and political concerns were the primary drivers of political and civil engagement, aspects of Indigenous culture influenced information flows and mobilization among #IdleNoMore tweeters.
Industrial growth and international trade are facilitated by good governance, as this paper demonstrates by empirically analysing the impact of country governance on the apparel industry performance. This paper contributes to the neo-institutional theory by adding cases based on emerging markets. The trade gravity model is employed to quantitatively analyse the impact of governance on the apparel industry performance. Drawing on the findings, this paper concludes that good governance facilitates performance of apparel trade at macro-level. However, the study also finds evidence of state capture and elite influence when good governance is achieved through non-democratic means. At empirical level the paper establishes the worldwide governance indicator (WGI) as applicable measure of the perception of governance when applied as explanatory variables. The paper also informs the trade policy bodies on sustainable performance initiatives.
This paper discusses the use of mixed-methods research in international trade economics. The focus of the paper is on the philosophical and procedural dilemmas faced by applied trade researchers in applying mixed-method approach instead of a quantitative only research strategy. Using the account of an illustrative study conducted earlier , this paper outlines common challenges of mixed-methods research and suggests solutions based on the pragmatist worldview of research. The challenges outlined are from the philosophical foundation, data and inference integration areas. This paper contributes to advancing mixed-methods research strategy in international trade analysis by providing an empirical legitimacy of the methodology within the field of scholarship.
Abstract Easy-to-use and commonly available software tools may significantly improve the way intelligence analysts do their job. This is especially true when quantitative assessments - which involve statistical and mathematical calculations - are required by decision makers. The possibility to chart and display results in an intuitive way will facilitate reporting and communication, minimizing ambiguities and the necessary narrative to make sense of collected information. This paper shows how to efficiently leverage MS Excel to produce elegant and accurate intelligence reports for early-warning tasks. As an example, information collected from social media is used in order to update coherently the estimates of the risk of a war between the USA and North Korea.
"This paper examines recent local government reform in the Northern Territory from two perspectives. The first is a quantitative perspective on population and finances, which focuses on the mixing of diverse interests in the recent changes. The second is a more observational perspective gained from working with one pre-reform local government and now the new larger local government that has replaced it. The paper argues that the recent changes are generational in nature in a number of different ways. It also argues that the greater challenge for the new local governments may be their vast geographic scale, rather than their mixing of diverse interests."--Abstract. ; Introduction -- Population and financial analysis: mixing diverse interests -- The problem of scale: an observational approach -- How did it happen? the idea of generational change -- Conclusion -- References
Using the Latin American concept of 'testimonio' as a suitable tool of analysis, this article explores the narrative experiences of former detainees who 'went public' with accounts of State brutality and torture relating to the conflict in Northern Ireland. Referring directly to these historical narratives alongside the findings of a series of contemporary interviews with Republican former detainees, the article argues that the core aspects of testimonio – collective struggle, resistance, audience and action – can all be observed in the accounts of those who were subjected to State violence in the detention system of Northern Ireland and that these accounts represent particular ways of challenging the official discourse around the conflict, its historiography and its legacy.
