Achieving Qualitative Change in Soviet Society: The Role of the Social Sciences

Under the policy of perestroika (restructuring), which has been operating in the USSR since 1985, an ideological & theoretical platform has been established for accelerating SE developments so as to qualitatively upgrade material well-being, social consciousness, & political & cultural life. The responsibility of the social sciences in this project is discussed, & it is concluded that, thus far, neither their practical performance, societal position, nor present state of theoretical development can be considered satisfactory for the task at hand. The dimensions of the problem are examined, with hopes of learning from the mistakes of the past. It is argued that democracy is the only means of truly achieving socialism as a social organism; a new agenda for social scientists toward this end is proposed, along with suggestions for restructuring the scientific research planning & reporting system. Particular difficulties that restructuring might pose to philosophy, sociology, & history are examined, & the new challenges presented by global interdependencies are considered. 1 Photograph. K.
