It is higher education's responsibility to continuously challenge and critique value and knowledge claims that have prescriptive tendencies. Part of this responsibility lies in engaging students in socio‐scientific disputes. The ill‐defined nature of sustainability manifests itself in such disputes when conflicting values, norms, interests, and reality constructions meet. This makes sustainability – its need for contextualization and the debate surrounding it – pivotal for higher education. It offers an opportunity for reflection on the mission of our universities and colleges, but also a chance to enhance the quality of the learning process. This paper explores both the overarching goals and process of higher education from an emancipatory view and with regard to sustainability.

Reporting the value of intellectual capital (IC) in the disclosure process for stakeholders has focused largely on the construction of indicators determined by the companies. This paper reports a study conducted with the investment community to determine the information they need to assist them in making investment decisions. This research project sets out to answer what are the perceptions towards strategic capital information required to assist in decision making and what are perceived as the most important or critical strategic management capital and strategic marketing capital indicators. More specifically, the study addresses the inter‐relationship between the knowledge of indicators and the perceived importance of disclosing the information on these indicators.

The works under consideration in this essay all explore identities, relationships, and ways of life that have intersected, in one way or another, with Portugal's intertwined history of emigration, empire, and nation-making. Two of them—Portuguese Women in Toronto: Gender, Immigration, and Nationalism, by Wenona Giles, and The Portuguese in Canada: From the Sea to the City, edited by Carlos Teixeira and Victor M.P. Da Rosa—focus on a relatively recent component of Portugal's diaspora. The other two—D'Albuquerque's Children: Performing Tradition in Malaysia's Portuguese Settlement, by Margaret Sarkissian, and "Brazilians in Portugal, Portuguese in Brazil: Constructions of Sameness and Difference," by Bela Feldman-Bianco—explore contemporary manifestations of Portugal's history as a colonial power.

Ainsi, c'est toute une normativité marquée par une matérialité croissante des droits qui se développe dans le temps. Depuis plus d'un siècle, la politique de modernisation administrative est rythmée par le rappel constant, mais à chaque étape amplifié, de l'usager-créancier, qui sert d'ultime justification. Aujourd'hui, à travers les figures connexes du client et du citoyen, l'usager-créancier permettrait de concilier droit et management, montrant que ce qui se joue en permanence est la façon de penser et de réguler la continuité entre l'individu et l'État.

Alongside the Roman census from Augustus' time and the ecclesiastical surveys or polyptychs of the 8th and 9th century Carolingian kingdoms, the Domesday Survey of 1086 occupies a most significant place in accounting history. Domesday Book, the outcome of the Survey, lists the incomes, tax assessments, wealth and resources of most estates in England and was used as a working accounting document by the monarch and public officials to raise taxes, distribute resources and consolidate power. Although the Domesday document itself survives, many details of its construction and use have been lost in the mists of time. This paper describes research to discover how taxes were levied and which estates and tenants received favorable treatment.

This article concentrates on the discursive construction of mergers and acquisitions in the media. Drawing on critical discourse analysis, the article focuses on justification, legitimization and naturalization processes in three historically significant cases in the Finnish media. The analysis reveals four distinctive discourse types- `rationalistic', `cultural', `societal' and `individualistic'-and elaborates their structural characteristics. The analysis shows that rationalistic discourses typically dominate discussion, while the other discourses are subordinated to the rationalistic discursive practices. This usually means justification of particular merger or acquisition deals and legitimization of specific actions taken by management. In the longer run, this is likely to lead to naturalization of specific management practices in the mergers and acquisitions context.

susan gal is Professor of Anthropology and Linguistics at the University of Chicago. She is presently doing research on the political economy of language, including linguistic nationalism, and especially the rhetorical and symbolic aspects of political transformation in contemporary Eastern Europe. In studying postcommunist societies, her work focuses as well on the construction of gender and discourses of reproduction. Her recent publications include The Politics of Gender after Socialism(Princeton University Press, 2000) co-authored with Gail Kligman,Reproducing Gender: Politics, Publics and Everyday Life after Socialism (Princeton University Press, 2000), which she coedited with Gail Kligman, and Languages and Publics: The Making of Authority (St. Jerome's Press, 2001) coedited with Kathryn Woolard.

Cet article traite du fonctionnement de l'Autorité palestinienne à la veille de la « deuxième Intifada » à travers le prisme du droit, en prenant comme objet le contrôle juridique de l'Autorité palestinienne. À partir d'une enquête de terrain effectuée en avril et mai 2000, l'auteur cherche à décrire les débats relatifs à la construction d'un État palestinien et s'intéresse plus particulièrement aux enjeux liés à la mise en place d'institutions étatiques telles que la Justice, en insistant sur le rôle des institutions financières internationales dans ce processus. Le thème abordé fournit l'occasion de se pencher sur les dénonciations d'un système politique confiné dans des pratiques arbitraires et personnelles du pouvoir.

Résumé Une histoire singulière – celle de Marlène – permet de comprendre la manière dont les individus font face aux difficultés majeures de la vie, qu'il s'agisse de dissociation familiale, de violences sociales ou institutionnelles, d'errance et de rupture, dans des périodes où ils ne disposent plus d'ancrages ou de soutiens sociaux. Dans les trajectoires jalonnées par ces épreuves, des pratiques très personnelles y introduisent des ressources, des repères et des supports pouvant aider à maintenir une autonomie. Cette coexistence entre la gestion du quotidien et les temps forts de la vie sociale relève du champ de la santé mentale, considérée comme l'espace de la construction continue des individus dans des sociétés dominées par la différenciation et la concurrence.

The owners of property taken for public use are often compensated for their loss. Compensation based on market value is known to create a moral hazard problem and induce inefficient investment. However, no compensation, while efficiency inducing, is not a feasible, or desirable alternative, because it is perceived to be unfair: individual landowners crushed under the governmental leviathan. An alternative is proposed for public projects (as road construction) for which all benefits are incorporated in land values. In this case compensation based on the value of a property had it not been taken, rather than its market value prior to the public project, is both efficient and fair.

Ce texte analyse l'émergence, pendant la Première Guerre mondiale en France, d'une association, dont les statuts sont déposés en 1919, destinée à défendre les intérêts de ceux qui se nomment alors les " écrivains combattants ". Cette Association des Écrivains Combattants (A.E.C.) tente de rassembler les auteurs de livres de guerre ayant fait la guerre au front par-delà leurs oppositions politiques et malgré le retour d'une conflictualité de plus en plus prononcée dans le champ littéraire. Sans y parvenir totalement, elle joue néanmoins un rôle crucial dans la construction d'une mémoire de guerre des milieux littéraires, en publiant notamment une monumentale anthologie des écrivains morts à la guerre.

Bricks are the manufactured product more important as construction material of the Alcazaba (Málaga); this is one of the most symbolic military fortifications from the Islamic period in Spain, and was build and rebuilt continuously from the VIII to the XIV centuries. Chronology of the building of different areas in the Alcazaba is uncertain from the archaeological point of view and a datation study is being carried out with base on the mineralogical end petrological analysis of bricks of known chronology. The aim of this work is to evaluate the contribution of morphometry analysis of brick thin slides and their mineralogical and chemical composition to discriminate the main brick typologies.

In this collaboration the authors state that over the past decade the relations between Mexico and Canada have experienced a substantial qualitative change which has led them to consider themselves today as "strategic partners". They maintain that both countries have pledged to build a wide-range political and trade agenda of cooperation, in which not only the respective governments and business groups participate, but also academic and civil organizations. From a historical point of view, they address the main factors of these bilateral relations, in order to understand their present circumstance and the challenges faced, as well as the prospects for the construction of a North American community. A multiplicity of local expressions of cultural reaffirmation emerged against the changes promoted since 1753 by the Bourbon monarchy related to the "Patronato" in New Spain. This article proposes that the façade and towers of the Parish of Dolores is an example of these expressions. The paper analyses the political content behind the construction of this monumental parish and establishes the links between its the actual building and the foundation of the town. It suggests that the iconology was a local representation of the social model of administration implemented in Michoacan and the reaffirmation of the role of the monarch as Vicar and protector of Christianity. ; No se cuenta con resumen.

Following an overview of currents in American political development (APD), specific lines of APD inquiry are detailed, exposing multiple orders, ingrained incompatibilities, & colliding principles of organization as emergent premises for investigation of US politics. Discussion begins with APD studies of American political culture goaded by the work of Louis Hartz (1955). Next, analyses building on V. O. Key's (1955) proposition of periodization, ie, that US politics is periodically punctuated by "sharp & durable changes," are addressed. Attention turns to institutions & their construction of politics, attending to three versions of the constructivist thesis, policy & polity, & intercurrence. Conclusions center on a sketch of two conceptions of history developing from these studies. J. Zendejas
