The hypothesis that countries pass through 3 successive phases of development--an initial phase of stationary or slow growth, a phase when the growth rate is increasing, & a phase of decreasing growth--was confirmed using regression on 2 equations for growth acceleration. The sample consisted of 48 less developed countries & 25 developed countries which meet the following tests: at least a 7 year data sample, gross domestic product greater than .5 billion, population larger than 2,000,000, & political stability. Data were taken from the UN Statistical Yearbook, when available, & covered 2 periods: 1953-1963 & 1958-1968. Results are explained & deviant cases are discussed. 3 levels of countries were identified: less developed, developing, & developed. Less developed countries are lagging while the gap between developing & developed countries is closing. Additional calculations were presented substituting percentage of agricultural population for per capita product; the statistical fit was not as good as with the earlier calculations. 5 Figures. An analysis is presented of political ideology & the school-based political socialization experience of an elite national sample of high school students as important sources of educational discontent. A paper & pencil questionnaire was administered to 1,811 high school seniors, from all over the US, attending nongovernmental educational programs in Washington, DC. The findings revealed a substantial level of student alienation; over 50% agreed partially or totally with the radical critique of education. Student activism & political beliefs, on the other hand, were poor predictors of educational discontent. 1 Figure, 2 Tables. Modified HA.

3 factors affecting the influence of peer groups in the political socialization of Soviet schoolchildren are examined: perceived salience of the peer groups; the extent, nature, & quality of interactions with those groups; & the compatibility of the norms of the peer groups with those of other socializing agents. The findings presented lead to conclusions about the existence of a "teen culture" in the USSR & about the socializing capability of the Octoberists, Pioneers, & Komsomol, the politically-inspired youth organizations in the schools. 4 Tables. WE COULD PROFITABLY EXAMINE THE CONTENT OF ALIENATION AND PERHAPS EXORCISE IT, IF WE HAD A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT IS NOT OR HOW IT MIGHT BE REINTERPRETED. FOR THIS EXPERIMENT, THE POSSIBILITIES OF THE MIND ARE QUASI-INFINITE BUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF HISTORYARE QUITE RESTRICTED.

Children have very low levels of response stability on many questions commonly used in political socialization studies, particularly those measuring attitudes. Data from a 3-wave panel survey of 1,000 San Francisco area youngsters, ranging in age from 9 to 15, were used to measure the stability of children's responses to common political socialization questions. The research was conducted from Dec 1968 through May 1969. A table of response change from wave 1 to 3 is given for a question asked. Children have a very low level of stability across 3 intervals in response to questions commonly used in political socialization studies. Possible explanations for this phenomenon are offered. Suggested strategies for future research include: (1) it may be important to discuss "embryonic forms of attitudes" among children, rather than "attitudes"; (2) a "don't know" choice for each question should be included; & (3) open-ended questions should be favored over closed questions. 3 Tables. "THROUGH FACTOR ANALYSIS, USING BOTH OBLIQUE & VARIMAX FACTOR ROTATIONS, THIS RESEARCH TESTED THE UNIDIMENSIONALITY OF VARIOUS POLITICAL SCALES. 3 SCALES (POLITICAL INTOLERANCE, ANTI-FRENCH-CANADIAN, & POLITICAL ALIENATION) ALL HELD TOGETHER IN THEIR ORIGINAL FORM & 2 SCALES (LIBERAL-CONSERVATIVE & POLITICAL PARTICIPATION) EACH SPLIT INTO 2 SUBSCALES WHICH IN TURN HELD TOGETHER." THIS SPLITTING WAS AN INDICATION THAT THE SCALES WERE DIFFERENTIATING IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES. "INTERSCALE CORRELATION WAS DETERMINED THROUGH EXAMINATION OF THE FACTOR CORRELATION MATRIX & THROUGH ORTHOGONAL AXIS ROTATION. THESE TECHNIQUES SHOWED THAT THE SCALES ARE LARGELY UNCORRELATED, & THEREFORE EACH SCALE IS MEASURING A DIFFERENT POLITICAL ATTRIBUTE." THE SURVEY USED A RESTRICTED SAMPLE OF 621 INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE TAKING THE MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM OFFERED BY THE DEPT OF THE EXTENSION AT THE U OF ALBERTA. THE SAMPLE WAS MC IN NATURE. THE ITEMS ON THE QUESTIONNAIRE MEASURED 3 VARIABLES: POLITICAL, SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC, & ORGANIZATIONAL. THOSE MEASURING POLITICAL & ORGANIZATIONAL VARIABLES USED A LIKERT-TYPE SCALE. 2 TABLES. L. The communications process among voters following McGovern's decision to drop Eagleton from the 1972 Democratic national ticket was studied shortly after the announcement, with a convenience sample of 108 R's from the NY area. The study explored the following questions: (1) How did awareness of the decision result? (2) Did appreciable interpersonal communication result regardless as to how awareness was established? (3) Did this result in opinion change? (4) Did involvement in such conversations vary directly with interest in political events generally? (5) Did such interest in political events bear any relationship as to how R's said they judge presidential candidates? (6) Did any relationship emerge between the source of news on McGovern's decision & the criteria (issues, image, or party) used in judging presidential candidates? The results are discussed in context with prior studies on John F. Kennedy's assassination, Eisenhower's 1975 heart attack, the launch of the Explorer I satellite, Alaskan statehood the Khruschev ouster, & the Walter Jenkins Scandal. Except for the most calamitous of events, interpersonal communications plays little role in establishing awareness, but instead takes place after awareness is created by the mass media. 6 Tables. AA.
