ABSTRACT This article aims at establishing a dialogue between the theory of hegemony of Ernesto Laclau and the categorial interpretation of Marx by Moishe Postone. First, I will show that the hegemonic logic of Laclau appears logically constituted by the dynamic of capital as Postone studies it. Second, I will defend the relevance of the hegemonic conception of politics, no longer as an originary social ontology, but as a limited (yet partially effective) social logic characteristic of capitalist society.

This project is an attempt to understand the Chinese dress qipao in Republican China, with a primary concentration in Shanghai, and its associations with body politics, urbanscape, modernity, personal and national identity, and sociocultural practices. In particular, I argue that qipao, amongst other fashions of Republican China, had been one of the earliest examples of the modern expression of individuality through fashion in China; I strive to discover how this practice was enabled by its contemporary social environment as well as technological advancements.

For decades, sexual violence prevention and sexual consent have been a recurrent topic on college campuses and in popular media, most recently because of the success of the #MeToo movement. As a result, institutions are deeply invested in communicating consent information. This article problematizes those institutional attempts to teach consent by comparing them to an alternative grounded in queer politics. This alternative information may provide a useful path to redesigning consent information by destabilizing categories of gender, sexuality, and even consent itself.

Youth-led protest movements that emerged in Afghanistan after the 2014 Afghan presidential election added a new dynamic to Afghan politics. Motivated primarily by widespread perceptions of injustice, exclusion and marginalization from governmental policymaking, and rapidly deteriorating economic and security conditions, the protest movements sharply criticized the administration of President Ashraf Ghani. This report examines the emergence of a new generation of youth activists in Afghanistan and the responses of the government and international community to those movements.

I write this piece as a commentary to Habashi's article (this issue) on the national identity of Palestinian children. Habashi reminds us here that national identities are not static and fixed and that children need to be considered as active agents in constructing and reconstructing national and global politics. I take her long-standing commitment to Palestinian children's narratives of their own geopolitical worlds to consider the geopolitical lives of children in my own home country – Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Exploring emergency politics of international organisations (IOs), this title also studies cases in which, based on justifications of exceptional necessity, IOs expand their authority, increase executive discretion, and interfere with the rights of their rule-addressees. This 'IO exceptionalism' is seen in crisis responses of a diverse set of institutions including the United Nations Security Council, the EU, and WHO. Through six in-depth case studies, the text analyses the institutional dynamics unfolding in the wake of the assumption of emergency powers by IOs.

'From Heimat to Hatred' studies German Jews involved in ventures that were from the beginning, or became increasingly, of the Right. Jewish agricultural settlement, Jews' participation in the so-called "Defense of Germandom in the East", their place in military and veteran circles and finally right-of-center politics form the core of this book. It investigates the inherent tension in the involvement in such ventures between sincere dedication to them and the apologetic defense against antisemitic stereotypes of rootlessness, intellectualism or cosmopolitanism.

The article presents theresults of research conductedin the municipality of Slubice. Their results clearly show that at the local level we have to deal with personalization local politics. The research also made it possible to estimate the turn ou tin this area, identify the reasons for absenteeism, an indication of the likely winners of the election for mayor and specify the reasons forvoting for a particular candidate. The project was implemented during the election campaign before the local elections of 2014.

In this issue of Kurdish Studies, the eleventh since our first publication five years ago, we are again fortunate to have a thought-provoking collection of pieces covering a variety of different topics pertaining to the culture, history, and politics of the Kurds. This issue includes two original pieces written by Sacha Alsancakli and Aram Rafaat respectively, as well as a translation by Ethem Çoban of Joachim von Elbe's 1929 piece Der englisch-türkische Mossulkonflikt [The English-Turkish Conflict of Mosul].

Despite its early promise, Armenia's transition to democracy has stalled. The literature on post-Communist transitions ascribes this outcome to the autocratic preferences of its first generation of leaders, and particularly the country's first president Levon Ter-Petrossian. I argue in this article that that literature depicts a profoundly distorted picture of the Armenian politics of the 1990s. The failure of Armenia's transition was primarily due to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh and the political processes it set in motion.

Predictive analysis is rare in the field of Czech security studies. For this reason, scenarios of world politics by Institute of International Relations (IIR) (2012-2017) as well as predictions by the think-tank European values (2016) constitute pioneering works worthy of attention. The article analyses these scenarios, focusing on their methodological aspects. The articles concludes by noting that IIR's scenarios are a welcome contribution to the field but the same cannot be said about scenarios of European values.
