In this special issue of Historical Social Research, indicators are considered epistemic devices that render the world governable by quantification. While endowed with an aura of objectivity, indicators are not neutral devices. Instead they transform the world they claim to describe. Against the backdrop of a global proliferation of indicators, we argue in favour of research that strategically focuses on the processes that lead to the institutionalisation and systematic use of key indicators in politics compared to cases in which these processes fail. This type of research strategy could enhance the accumulation of systematic knowledge as well as the relevance of social studies of quantification. Furthermore, we propose a heuristic for analysing how indicators are involved in shaping imaginations of the future following the three distinct dimensions of meaning (factual, social, temporal) as introduced by Luhmann. We also review diachronic and synchronic approaches to analysing the genesis and use of indicators in order to derive testable hypotheses about the gap between indicator design and policy use. Finally, we introduce the articles of this special issue.

Recent technical developments made it realistic that individual historians could have work stations on their desks, which would allow them access to multi-GB collections of archival documents in digitized form. The problem with such a collection is, that the information systems of different archives usually handle their archival material in such a way, that it becomes very hard to extract content from one of them and integrate them into a local information system optimized to support the research interests of a specific user. An architecture for information system is described, which maximizes the possibility to transfer documents between different such systems. This architecture is based upon the concept of digital objects representing individual documents which contain all the semantic information necessary to integrate them seamlessly into different information systems.

This paper clarifies the importance of discussing community transformation in Asian societies. Since the definition of "communities" by McIver, this term has contained a meaning of "chamber of secrets." I criticize this notion of communities shown in Community Studies through a bibliographical and terminological consideration. I also introduce basic differences of concepts of communities between Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe as a background. Based on this criticism, it introduces five articles that overcome the previous understanding of communities in Asian societies.

For at least 500 years, differences in denomination have helped shape social life in Europe. How have religious perspectives influenced the perception of the other, lifestyles, and living conditions? How do we weigh the influence of religion in relation to other social characteristics – and is religion still relevant in modern Europe? This collection of papers in this HSR Forum addresses the role of religious affiliation and belief on demo-graphic and social behavior in the past. Drawing on both qualitative and quan-titative sources, the authors seek to understand how attachment to particular religious denominations shaped the attitudes and behavior of people in a variety of European societies in previous centuries. The papers focus on denominational differences in demographic and economic behavior in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Poland and Albania. While aware that religion was not the only determinant of differences in thought and behavior, they argue that religion influenced mentalities and actions, especially in societies divided by denomination.

"Post-modernism" and "post-socialism" are two frames that have been widely applied to account for urban changes over the past decades. It is a common statement to consider socialist urbanism as the pivotal embodiment of modernist thinking. The transformation to post-socialism consequentially appears as an instance of post-modernization. This overview article challenges such identification, arguing that modernist endeavours and the experience of the modern have been more diverse and complex than such periodization imply. In the present paper, we want to make the distinction between a narrow and broad conception of modernism. In the first part, we begin by discussing the "high modernist" approach, often conflated with modernism in toto. In such a narrow understanding, "modernism" amounts to a particular style in architecture and approach in urban planning and governance. Next, we present a broad conception of modernism as a cultural response to the experience of modernity and the yearning for being modern. We argue for the necessity of addressing the complexity and breadth of modernist visions. In conclusion, we pinpoint the major themes addressed by the contributors to this special issue and highlight how we think this volume contributes to scholarly debates about the merit of revisiting and resurrecting modernist urbanism in twenty-first century post-socialist urban contexts and beyond.

This introduction offers a brief historiographic account on current histories of security. A case is made for historians to rely more on and profit from recent theories and concepts in political science, most notably the concepts invented by the Copenhagen School on securitization. Furthermore, an attempt is made to 'historicize security' and provide some new methodological perspectives, in particular the idea of connecting security to conspiracy as an operational dispositive for analyzing instances of security policy making.

Der Übergang zur Marktwirtschaft hat neue Handlungsspielräume für wirtschaftliche Aktivitäten und Unternehmertum eröffnet. Die unzureichenden Erfahrungen mit der Marktwirtschaft sowie die mangelnde Akzeptanz der privaten Wirtschaft in der Bevölkerung stellen jedoch wesentliche Einschränkungen für die Entfaltung des neuen Unternehmertums dar. Die Transformation im wirtschaftlichen Bereich lässt sich als ein Lernprozess interpretieren, an dem sowohl die Unternehmer selbst als auch ihre institutionelle und politische Umgebung beteiligt sind. Deshalb steht die Transformation 'von unten' im Mittelpunkt des Forschungsinteresses. Die drei Studien des Kapitels sind diesem Thema gewidmet. Während die ersten zwei Artikel diverse Aspekte der Wirtschaftstransformation in Russland untersuchen, nimmt der dritte eine breitere Perspektive an und zieht Beispiele aus mehreren postsozialistischen Gesellschaften heran. Alle drei Untersuchungen setzen sich mit den institutionellen, politischen und wirtschaftskulturellen Rahmenbedingungen unternehmerischer Aktivitäten auseinander und gehen der Frage nach, wie diese verbessert werden können. In this article, I examine the possibility of using TURING's concept of "imitation games" to analyze political discourse. This poses the theoretical question of identity matching. It also poses a methodological question: Is it possible to distinguish, using only internal criteria, the political discourse of political actors that belong to two distinct categories? The effort to answer these theoretical and methodological questions highlights important common motives in quantitative and qualitative research.

Bei der vorliegenden Einführung zu dem Band "Alltagswissen, Interaktion und gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit", die 1981 erschienen ist, gibt der Autor zunächst einen Überblick über die Definition des Begriffs des Alltagswissens und der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit. Gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit sind demnach all die Ereignisse und Tatbestände, die das Handeln der Gesellschaftsmitglieder ausmachen und bestimmen. Dass diese Ereignisse und Tatbestände gerade in der Art handlungsrelevant werden, wie sie von den Gesellschaftsmitgliedern unmittelbar erfahren werden, ist ein Gesichtspunkt, von dem alle in dem genannten Band vertretenen Arbeiten ausgehen. Danach geht es um die gesellschaftliche Verteilung des Alltagswissens. Im dritten Kapitel befasst sich der Autor mit dem Alltagswissen und alltagsweltlichen Routineangelegenheiten.
