At times of uncertainty, society has seen women — and women have seen themselves — as exemplifying the 'old' values. They have tried to hang on to what they had — keeping the home fires burning, conserving traditional attitudes, fighting to keep the familiar pattern going, weeping whilst men worked. These have been women's responses to danger and to change. Few women of the past have breasted danger or given change a nudge forward. When they have — and a glance at the short list makes this very clear — their quality has consisted not only in their personal characteristics but in their utilisation of the opportunity life gave them of acquiring the knowledge which was an essential basis for their action. The tragedy for women, and hence for society generally, has been that so few of them had the chance to acquire that knowledge. Without knowledge and the confidence that comes from it no one can plan for the future in such a way as to conserve what is of value in the past, whilst adapting to the challenge of present and making a constructive contribution to the future. So women have hitherto played little part in the evolution of new social, political and economic responses to challenging situations.
I here explore the educational potential of cinema and TV-series through the eyes of the French philosopher Alain Badiou. To illustrate, I read the Norwegian web-based TV-series Skam (shame), which reached out to millions of Nordic teens by a broad distribution, easy access and speaking a language young people could relate to. The series portrays the many faces and ambiguities of shame and shaming embedded in Nordic youth culture. In bringing the question of the pedagogy of cinema and TV-series to the forefront, I here read Skam on three analytical levels. First, to explore the TV-series capability to captivate the viewers through a doubling of the real. Second, to examine Badiou's idea of cinema as an ontological art, revolving around the question of the relationship between being and appearing. Third, I read Skam analytically, to consider Badiou's claim that cinema is a democratic emblem. In sum, what may be the series' potential for shaping the viewers' ethical–political awareness?

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to show that the crisis of social security and state pension systems in the ageing industrial societies is actually a crisis of the model of social and economic organization.Design/methodology/approachThe present economic model of industrial countries counts human beings only as contributors in production and consumption, and not as members of a society.FindingsThe paper shows that with another hierarchical order of values, the views of human beings are different.Practical ImplicationsIf the state cares for the citizen and not the worker, then it is responsible to provide health care and pensions to all citizens and not just to workers and to workers‐attached persons.Originality/valueThe paper paints the picture of another society, and not of the present one where the homo‐economicus dominates.

AbstractWe explore the effects of state-level election reforms on voter turnout in the 2000, 2004, and 2008 presidential elections. Using a cost-benefit model of political participation, we develop a framework for analyzing the burdens imposed by the following: universal mail voting, permanent no-excuse absentee voting, nonpermanent no-excuse absentee voting, early in-person voting, Election Day registration, and voter identification requirements. We analyze turnout data from the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Current Population Surveys and show that implementation by states of both forms of no-excuse absentee voting and Election Day registration has a positive and significant affect on turnout in each election. We find positive but less consistent effects on turnout for universal mail voting and voter identification requirements. Our results also show that early in-person voting has a negative and statistically significant correlation with turnout in all three elections.

Chinese researchers who are interning outside their homeland and present the results of their dissertation research in Russian or Ukrainian, choose mainly a historical and descriptive type of presentation. However, based on the analysis of the characteristics of Chinese piano pedagogy already highlighted by Chinese, Russian, Belarusian scientists, it is possible to find out its origins, concretize the foundations and leading development trends. The interaction of European (Russian) and national traditions in the process of formation of the Chinese piano school exacerbates the question of the nature of this interaction.
The early years are a critical time to introduce key concepts for lifelong learning. In recognition of this, in July 2009, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) endorsed Australia's first strategy outlining a vision for the development of young children and the implementation of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). Road safety education is an important component of early childhood education as it lays the foundation for children to become safe road users. Therefore, to provide early childhood educators with a framework for evidence-based road safety education, VicRoads on behalf of the Road Safety Education Reference Group Australasia (RSERGA), commissioned the development of National Practices for Early Childhood Road Safety Education. This article outlines the development of these practices. It is anticipated the engagement by educators with the National Practices for Early Childhood Road Safety Education will foster early childhood road safety learning; however, future research is required to trial and evaluate these practices.

"Between 10% and 20% of marriages in Taiwan involve the union of a Taiwanese national with a Chinese immigrant, with as many as 13,000 cross-Strait couples registering new unions each year. Exceptional States examines new configurations of marriage, immigration, and governance emerging in an increasingly mobile Asia where Cold War legacies continue to shape contemporary political struggles over sovereignty and citizenship. This book poignantly and respectfully documents the struggle of these immigrant Chinese women as they seek belonging, acceptance, and recognition in their new land. The women's experiences parallel Taiwan's own desire to receive recognition from the international community as a sovereign nation-state. By tracing these political parallels, the book shows how Chinese marital immigrants are affected by Taiwan's own uncertain political status in relation to China in ways that marital immigrants from other Asian countries are not. Exceptional States illustrates the social, political and subjective consequences of immigrants who are living with this exceptional status. The book concludes with a discussion of how Chinese spouses' efforts to create a sense of belonging for themselves across the fluid waters of the Taiwan Strait offer possible insights into solving Taiwan's current sovereignty challenges"--Provided by publisher
