Examines prospects for organized labor in light of events at the winter convention of AFL-CIO chiefs in Bal Harbour, FL. For the first time since 1894, the organization's president, Lane Kirkland, may be compelled to step down. Although Kirkland remains unwilling to recognize himself as a liability, officials of the teamsters, coal miners, autoworkers, machinists, & government workers have asked him to retire, & widespread Democratic defeat in the 1994 election has left him without a leg to stand on. It still remains unclear whether Kirland's old cold war allies will exercise some personal independence by detaching themselves from his failing machine, or will so fear the alternative that they elect to circle the wagons.
