"Contemporary society needs the recognition of a moral middle ground, where human behavior can be evaluated as permissible, understandable, or even valuable. As a counterforce to polarization and divisive politics, an identity model is proposed in which individual and group identities are transcended by a human and ecological identity"--

Wreckonomics examines the Cold War, the "war on terror", the "fight against illegal migration", and the "war on drugs and crime" through political systems analysis. The book argues that these various "wars" have freqeuently been damaging and even counterproductive. It also considers the costs of laissez faire and lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.

An understanding of the Australian Constitution as a framework for government in Australia is critical for any law student interested in ensuring that the rule of law is upheld. Australian Constitutional Law: Concepts and Cases provides an accessible introduction to Australian constitutional law, integrating theory and doctrine. This book provides clear explanations and carefully selected case extracts that are structured conceptually, rather than chronologically, to enable students to understand both the current state of constitutional law doctrine and how to engage in constitutional reasoning. Discussion questions throughout encourage students to consider how the law has evolved and how it can be applied to hypothetical legislation. The second edition has been updated to include commentary on significant recent High Court decisions and a new chapter that examines the scope of the Commonwealth's power to impose taxation. Written by leading constitutional law scholar Luke Beck, Australian Constitutional Law remains an invaluable resource for law students.

'Life 24x a Second' highlights the life-sustaining and life-affirming power of cinema. Author Elsie Walker pays particular attention to pedagogical practice and students' reflections on what the study of cinema has given to their lives. This book provides multiple perspectives on cinema that matters for the deepest personal and social reasons-from films that represent psychological healing in the face of individual losses to films that represent humanitarian hope in the face of global crises. Ultimately, Walker shows how cinema that moves us emotionally can move us toward a better world.

"On Shifting Ground examines how it is to become a man in a place and time defined by economic contraction and carceral expansion. Jamie J. Fader draws on in-depth interviews with a racially diverse sample of Philadelphia's millennial men to analyze the key tensions that organize their lives: isolation versus connectedness, stability versus 'drama,' hope versus fear, and stigma and shame versus positive, masculine affirmation. In the unfamiliar cultural landscape of contemporary adult masculinity, these men strive to define themselves in terms of what they can accomplish despite negative labels, seeking to avoid 'becoming a statistic' in the face of endemic risk"--
"Andrew Kahrl's enraging national assessment of legal and financial dispossession proves that African Americans property owners have long been beset by racist practices, invisible obstacles, and hidden traps that leave them vulnerable to economic predation. Kahrl focuses specially on how property taxes have been used to swindle African Americans out of their land, with the cooperation of public officials and courts. These racist regimes fund and reinforce inequity, with blacks paying more in taxes than whites as they lose tremendous inheritable wealth to whites. There is something more fundamental than the "forty acres" of settlement lore: the taxes on them."
"This book is divided into three parts-one on the Good Life, another on Doing the Right Thing, and the last on the Status of Morality. You can read these parts in any order. Many will want to begin at the end, for instance, with a discussion of whether morality is a human invention, or is in some way objective. Some will prefer to start in the middle, asking about the supreme principle of morality (and whether there is any such thing). And others may want to begin at the beginning, by thinking about human well-being and the quality of life. Each part can be understood independently of the others, though there are of course many points of connection across the three main branches of moral philosophy. No matter where you begin, there are footnotes in most chapters that provide cross-references to relevant discussions elsewhere in the book. When beginning a new area of study, you're bound to encounter some unfamiliar jargon. I've tried to keep this to a minimum, and I suppose that you can be thankful that we're doing ethics here, rather than physics or anatomy. I define each technical term when I first use it, and have also put together a glossary, which appears at the end of the book. Each specialized term that appears in boldface has an entry there. You may be interested enough in what you read here that you'll want to continue your studies in moral philosophy. There is a natural place to begin-the companion volume to this book, The Ethical Life, described later in this preface. I have also compiled a list of Suggestions for Further Reading for each chapter or pair of chapters. This list appears at the end of the book, just before the glossary. I have selected the readings with an eye to what might be accessible and interesting to those just beginning their study of moral philosophy"--
"It is both an honor and privilege to write the foreword for this book authored by Dr. Jeff Bernstein, a personal friend, and colleague who I have known for over 30 years. Over that time, I have served as a police chief with two police agencies and served as the president for both the Florida Police Chief Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. I have conducted numerous police promotional processes for the ranks of sergeant to police chief, and as a lawyer I have been used as a subject matter expert in promotional processes on police practices. Currently, I serve as a presidentially appointed U.S. Marshal in the State of Florida. Dr. Jeff Bernstein, the coauthor of this book, and I have worked closely together in preparing police officers for promotional exams. He is without question the No. 1 authority on police promotional exam preparation in the country. As one of the nation's top experts in police supervision, Nathan Iannone asked Dr. Bernstein numerous times to revise his original book and update his book to be contemporary with the times. Prentice Hall also asked Dr. Bernstein to write the first official study guide for the book. The textbook you are about to read is a long-time best seller. It has been on more law enforcement promotional exam reading lists than any other book. It's considered by many to be the "Bible of Police Supervision." If you have this in your hands right now, you're probably studying for a promotional exam or taking a police supervision college class. This book is the authority in the field and addresses everything a police supervisor should know. Making a successful transition from officer to supervisor is reviewed in the book. Basic supervisory responsibilities such as training, coaching, and counseling are discussed in the book. Dealing with citizen complaints, problem employees, and tactical deployment of field forces in critical situations are all covered in the book. After reviewing and studying these areas, you will have a much better understanding of how to handle these types of situations as a supervisor or manager. A new feature to this edition is that the key points in the book have already been identified by Dr. Bernstein for you. They will help you to do better on the exam you have to take as well as be a better supervisor or manager. Every day in every police department across the country supervisors deal with employees, citizens, peers, bosses, and unique situations they encounter on the street. You will find this book to be an excellent guide in regard to dealing with these individuals and situations. The kinds of things that every supervisor or manager should know are in this book! Finally, as you're reading this book, always keep your ultimate goal in mind. Whether it's to get the promotion you want or to be a better supervisor or manager, never lose sight of it. If you're ready to become a leader, study hard and stay focused. If you're tired of doing what you're doing and want to move up the ladder, study hard and stay focused. If you study hard, stay focused, and internalize the teachings of this book, you will be that much closer to achieving your ultimate goal. I wish you all the best. William "Bill" Berger"--
