This report examines the severe restrictions on the press in Nigeria especially in recent times which are manifested in the harassment, arrest and detention of journalists, forced closure of media houses, promulgation of arbitrary decrees and laws and the general uncertainty in the practice of journalism. The various laws impinging on press freedom are examined, leading to the finding that while the 1979 and 1989 Constitutions impose on the press the obligation of upholding the fundamental objectives of the Constitution as well as accountability and responsibility of the government to the people, it does not provide adequate protection and guarantee for the fulfillment of these roles.
