In the Western World extensive soc & econ res was late in the developing process, but in underdeveloped areas extensive res may enable them to avoid wasteful error. How res can be applied in areas where trained talent is scarce & soc change swift remains to be seen. A sketch of the resources for res, lines of recent & current res, & the needs & problems in relating res to African development south of the Sahara & north of the Union is presented. The need for knowledge which would identify & characterize the diverse African people & knowledge of the culture & soc org has led to a concentration in ethnography. Res institutes have continued ethnographic work before going on to the practical problems. Beginnings have been made in studying problems rising out of recent development. An interest is growing in Ur areas. Potentialities of development are of interest to the area of educ'al planning. The need for org in carrying out the details of long-range studies, the need for studying interrelationships among changes, & the need to apply the findings show the necessity for established res institutes. The coming of self-gov may lessen the support for soc res since most of the support, (money & staffs) has come from outside. J. D. Twight.
