This study uses narrative analysis to examine how racial, ethnic, and national schemas were mobilized by social actors to categorize Duwamish identity from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. In so doing, it evaluates how the classificatory schemas of non-indigenous actors, particularly the state, resembled or diverged from Duwamish self-understandings and the relationship between these classificatory schemes and the configuration of political power in the Puget Sound region of Washington state. The earliest classificatory schema applied to the Duwamish consisted of a racial category "Indian" attached to an ethno-national category of "tribe," which was honed during the treaty period. After the "Indian wars" of 1855-56, this ethno-national orientation was supplanted by a highly racialized schema aimed at the political exclusion of "Indians". By the twentieth century, however, formalized racialized exclusion was replaced by a racialized ethno-national schema by which tribal membership was defined using a racial logic of blood purity. In each case, the application of a particular classificatory schema corresponded to attempts by non-indigenous actors to consolidate their political domination of the Duwamish. These classificatory schemas, however, were resisted by Duwamish actors, whose self-identification was based more on attachment to territory than blood kinship. This research contributes to the sociological literature on racial, ethnic, and national categorization by showing 1) how classificatory schemas applied to Native Americans remain in motion even when the racial and ethnic categories are attached, 2) the relationship between classification and relations of domination and resistance, and 3) the limits of the state in imposing social categories on social actors.
This essay examines the histories of the French monarchy composed by French royalists of the period 1787-1831 with a threefold aim: to develop a model of how French royalist medievalisms evolved from Revolution to Restoration; to investigate whether the French Revolution altered perceptions of the Middle Ages; and to elaborate a theory of the relationship between medievalism and politics. The exercise is especially revelatory when studying periods of severe press censorship like the one that occupies us, and political groups inimical – like our monarchists – to the theoretical expression of political ideals.

This dataset contains the names and accompanying information of 573 Revolutionary War veterans who applied for federal "invalid" pensions between 1792 and 1795. As early as 1776, the Continental Congress authorized the provision of pensions to veterans who were "disabled in the service of the United States of America" and thereby rendered "incapable afterwards of getting a livelihood." Veterans typically applied to district courts where district judges evaluated their deservingness of support and their particular "degrees" of disability (one quarter, one half, and so on) which corresponded with their pension amounts. District courts then transmitted veterans' information and district judges' decisions to the War Department for approval. This dataset is comprised of lists compiled by the Secretary of War and communicated to the United States Congress. These lists were later included in the American State Papers (Claims, Volume 1).
This article presents a systematic review of the economic journalism of the Spanish Enlightenment between 1758 and 1792. In addition to identifying this type of journalism, it aims at discovering its sources, determining its main phases around two distinct periods (1758-1771 and 1776-1792), and locating its contents within the doctrinal trends of its time. In the shadow of the journalistic initiatives of this period, a journalism of a plural doctrinal inspiration emerged. It was based on the influence of French journalistic sources. Its culmination was reached in 1792, with the beginning of the publication of El Correo Mercantil. This article also underlines the central role of the publicists of the Madrid Economic Society and the Board of Trade. They were responsible of the improvements experienced in that period by an economic journalism that instigated the creation of a new «public» and gradually approached the journalism developed in other nearby nations.
Stephanopachys linearis (Kugelann, 1792) belongs to the family of horned powderpost beetles (Bostrichidae), represented in the fauna of Europe by 29 native species. It is a characteristic element of the northern, boreal zone of the Palaearctic and alpine areas of central and southern Europe. This species as a rare beetle important for the European Union, has been placed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive, on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles. S. linearis was described from Poland in 1792 and, after 220 years, again encountered in this country. The zoogeographical distribution is shown and elements of its biology and ecology are discussed.
