Main description: This volume explores forms of Jewish experience that span the period from antiquity to the present and encompass a wide range of textual, ritual, spatial, and visual materials. Chapters devote sustained attention to three key concepts—authority, diaspora, and tradition—that have long been central to the study of Jews and Judaism.

The growing interchange between family historians and sociocultural anthropologists is part of a broader movement linking anthropology and history, which is discussed in this article. Two traditions in anthropology—one symbolic and the other social organizational—have contributed in different ways to this in terdisciplinary development. The reasons for paying greater anthropological at tention to historical materials are discussed, as are the benefits to family historians of making more use of anthropology. Among the topics of mutual in terest considered are (a) the need for comparative research; (b) developing analytical tools for kinship study; (c) the relationship between norms and behavior; and (d) the relationship between structure and process.

From the 1930s, British anthropology was dominated by social anthropologists, an achievement of the two founding fathers, Bronislaw Malinowski and A.R. Radcliffe-Brown. This article analyses the difficult relation between anthropology and history. The point, therefore, is to show how anthropology conceptualises the past differently from history as a discipline. Beginning with the differences between anthropology and history in terms of the concept of time, the article highlights that while for history time is concrete, objective and exogenous to human beings, for anthropology it is characterised by its being condensed, collectively subjective and endogenous. By analyzing actual examples, the article shows that the anthropologist is not interested in the past per se, but rather in the past as a dimension of the present. Accordingly, actualised, revised and manipulated history as well as the role of the past in the present need to be taken into account. Consequently, history and the past have their own specific efficiency because they are also a form of knowledge and social resource mobilised by single individuals or groups to find their bearings and act accordingly in the present and likewise to plan the future.
