Seit der politischen Wende von 1989 hat sich Bulgarien als eines der politisch stabilsten Länder auf dem Balkan erwiesen. Die in Bulgarien existierende Tradition politischer Gewalttätigkeit in ihrer vorkommunistischen Form wurde nicht fortgesetzt. Lediglich einige Gruppierungen am Rande des politischen Spektrums propagieren eine rassistische Politik. Die führenden politischen Parteien und die staatlichen Behörden haben gegenüber den ethnischen Minderheiten des Landes eine im wesentlichen verantwortungsvolle Haltung eingenommen. Der Nationalismus bleibt jedoch ein wesentlicher Faktor der bulgarischen Innenpolitik. (BIOst-Mrk)
