PARTICIPANTS IN THE CONSULTATION ON WOMEN, MILITARISM AND DISARMAMENT, HELD IN GYOR, HUNGARY, AUGUST 27-27 1983, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE 10TH GENERAL CONFERENCE OF IPRA, WANT TO SHARE WITH IPRA THE FOLLOWING: 1. THE AUTHORS DISERN IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS BETWEEN PATRIACHY, MILITARISTIC STRUCTURES AND VALUES, AND DIRECT VIOLENCE AGAINST INDIVIDUALS, ESPECIALLY WOMEN AND CHILDREN. 2. THEY IDENTIFY A CONTINUUM OF VIOLENCE WHICH LINKS THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN TO THE VIOLENCE OF WAR. 3. THEY STRESS THAT THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE VARIOUS FORMS OF VIOLENCE ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE INVESTIGATIONS THAT PEACE RESEARCHERS NEED TO MAKE. 4. THEY STATE THAT RAPE AND BATTERING ARE VIOLENT ATROCITIES ESPECIALLY DIRECTED AGAINST WOMEN, AND THE ATROCITIES OF WAR, REPRESSION AND POVERTY FALL HARDER ON WOMEN THAN MEN WOMEN AND CHILDREN FROM A LARGE MAJORITY OF THE REFUGEES FROM WAR AND REPRESSION, AND FORM A LARGER PROPORTION OF THE ILLITERATE AND THE POOR, THAN MEN.

THE INCREASING PROMINENCE OF SCENARIOS OF NON-NUCLEAR WAR IN NATO'S DEFENCE PLANNING HAS MADE THE PROPER STATUS OF CHEMICAL WARFARE WEAPONS INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO ASSES. THE PERPLEXITIES LARGELY STEM FROM THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHEMICAL WEAPONS AND THE NUCLEAR THRESHOLD, AND WHAT THAT MAY MEAN FOR OVERALL DETERRENCE. SOME OF THE PROBLEMS CONFRONTING CHEMICAL WEAPONS (CW) DISARMAMENT ARE EXPLORED IN THIS ARTICLE. THE STARTING POINT IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE PRESENT CW ARMS CONTROL REGIME AND OF THE CW POLICIES THAT HAVE SO FAR FLOWED FROM IT.

Originally published in 1985 The Decision to Disarm Germany offers a fresh approach to Britain's First World War and Paris Peace Conference policy on the question of German military disarmament. It offers interpretations based on extensive research into unpublished records and private papers and provides important new conclusions about British policy. The book shows the interaction of domestic concerns and strategic considerations in the wartime development of British thinking on the issue of post-war German disarmament and in the post-Armistice formulation and implementation of Britain's German disarmament policy. It establishes the crucial interrelationship in British thinking and policy between German disarmament and general disarmament. It also shows the interwar consequences of wartime attitudes and peace conference policy.
