AbstractThis article explores how nutrition science became a significant part of the nation-building project in both Republican China and the early People's Republic of China within the context of burgeoning popular concerns over bodily health and an increasing sense of urgency. Insofar as nutrition science offered a new type of expertise about what to eat and what not to eat in daily life, it entailed harnessing the state's potential persuasive power to garner willing compliance, if not tacit obedience, from the population. Unlike previous scholarship, which takes the viewpoint of government authorities and the medical elite, this article argues that popular concerns about bodily health and culinary curiosity that were prevalent in major Chinese cities helped to popularize state-led dietary reform campaigns that culminated during the Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and continued even after the revolutionary regime change in the 1950s.

Many Western countries such as Scotland face the challenge of reducing carbon emissions associated with food systems (Garnett 2011) while also improving dietary nutritional intake (Scottish Government 2016). Both measures together with affordability represent a sustainable diet. The purpose of this paper is to estimate a healthy and sustainable diet for the major demographic groups in Scotland through producing a list of food products which would help create such a diet. The data for the analysis were sourced from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) for the purposes of estimating Scottish food consumption categories and their respective nutrients. The datasets were augmented with prices obtained from 2014 Kantar Worldpanel data in addition to carbon footprint data (cradle to grave). The diet was designed using a linear programming model, which minimised the monetary cost of the diet subject to 22 nutritional constraints based on UK and Scottish dietary recommendations plus a greenhouse gas emission constraint. The results suggest that a sustainable and healthy diet is possible for all the demographic groups. All 22 nutrient constraints were satisfied in the modelling of the healthy and sustainable diet and the cost of the seven-day diet was estimated to be the most expensive for the Female 11-14 group at £18.20. However, the diets are virtually vegetarian based and some quantities of food products are unrealistic, which may pose issues for consumer acceptability.

Abstract
The importance of nutrition as a research topic is linked not only to healthy eating and different types of medical conditions, such as obesity, allergies, malnutrition, but also to the relationship between nutrition and physical activity, to state's and large food companies' commercial activities, as well as to the sustainability of food production. On that basis, numerous studies have analyzed media content related to food and nutrition, their basic assumption being that (new and old) media have the ability to change the audience's perceptions, behaviors and attitudes towards various values which are accepted in contemporary societies. This paper presents the results of a comparative study of the way in which Romanian and German media cover the topic of nutrition. The research method used was the content analysis, applied to a sample of articles published on online media from the two countries between 2014 and 2016. Having as research objective the identification of the most relevant aspects regarding the content and shape of nutrition's coverage in media, this article discusses the similarities and differences recorded in the online press of the two countries on the topic of interest. According to the findings, the similarities are mainly related to some topics and subjects addressed, as well as to the ways of covering them, in particular through analysis articles, while the differences could instead be ascertained regarding the content of the articles, including the ways in which the journalists assume social roles in approaching, informing, debating, and educating concerning issues of public interest.
